Evans Cooling Systems, Inc. 255 Gay Street Sharon, CT 06069 860-364-5130 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE MACK E7 Installing Evans waterless Heavy Duty Coolant and a ResistorPac VER 02Feb2012 CAUTIONARY NOTE: DO NOT FLUSH COOLING SYSTEM WITH WATER! This procedure is modeled on USA Hauling 2006 MR688S with Mack E7-350HP Coolant temperature sensor: Mack P/N 64MT2103 Fan clutch: On-off type No sleeper No EGR No APU No fuel or tank heaters No SCR system (no DEF) Coolant temperature gauge is separate from the ECM Stock fan-on temperature is 204⁰F In this procedure a 70 Ohm ResistorPac is placed in series with the coolant temperature sensor, raising the fan-on, fan-off, and derating temperatures by making the ECM think the coolant temperature is cooler than it really is. The 70-ohms raises the fan-on temperature (for coolant) from 204⁰F to 230⁰F. The ResistorPac will also raise the derating and shut-down temperatures. The fan will continue to operate normally for a/c and charge air temperature requirements. A. Supplies, information, and special tools needed: 1. Purchase these items from a Volvo-Mack dealer: a. If the engine is equipped with a coolant filter, obtain a non-chemical coolant filter (OEM or aftermarket). b. If the thermostats will be changed, a gasket for the thermostat housing. 2. The following items are sourced from Evans Cooling Systems, Inc.: 888-990-2665 a. Enough Evans waterless Heavy Duty Coolant ( HDC ). 12 gallons is sufficient for the equipment as listed above and this figure includes 1 gallon used for flushing and 2.5 gallons extra. If there are additional coolant circuits, be sure to have enough additional coolant for them. b. If the thermostats will be changed, two Evans P/N E3034-205 thermostats. c. Evans-provided labels to warn against the addition of water. d. Evans ResistorPac P/N RP3-C70-MA2-0430. e. Refractometer for measuring water content Evans Part No. E-2190. f. Water Chaser Evans Part No. E-2195. 1

3. A high-volume air source (rather than high pressure) such as Makita blower Model UB 1101, widely available from the internet. A shop doing installations commercially should consider a Model MB 3CD Master Blaster. 4. An angled pick for difficult hoses. 5. A Prestone AF-1430P funnel is very handy (Google it.) B. The installation: 1. Inspect the cooling system for leaks. If there is a leak, do not proceed with the installation until the leak is repaired. 2. Place collection containers at appropriate locations. 3. Remove the pressure cap on the expansion tank 4. Open petcock at lower radiator hose. Once draining is complete, pull off the bottom radiator hose. 5. Open the block and compressor drains. The block and compressor drains look like this 6. Blow out the cab heater as follows: a. Remove the source hose from the heater. b. Set heater temperature to max. c. Turn on heater blower. d. Turn on ignition key. e. Using the Water-Chaser, blow air into the heater from the source side. f. Put some HDC into the Water-Chaser and blow it through the heater. g. Turn off the key. h. Don t re-connect the source hose yet. 7. If there are other coolant circuits external to the engine, blow them out (from the source side) and chase with new coolant as above. 8. Blow air into the expansion tank. Replace the expansion tank cap. 2

9. If the engine is equipped with a coolant filter, remove the filter and discard. (To be replaced later with a non-chemical filter.) 10. If the thermostats are going to be replaced: a. Open the thermostat housing and remove the thermostats. b. Blow air through the upper radiator hose into the radiator. c. Block the thermostat housing by-pass. (The by-pass is the passage that goes to the inlet side of the pump.) d. There are two thermostat holes that connect to the head coolant jacket. Block one of them. e. Blow air through the other thermostat hole. (The air goes through the head jacket, then through the block jacket and out the block drain. Some air will push through the pump and out the lower radiator hose.) f. Pour the remaining gallon of flush HDC into the thermostat hole and follow with air until there is no more flow out the bottom of the engine. g. Install the new thermostats. h. Skip to #12. 11. If the thermostats are not going to be replaced: Vent line in top radiator hose a. Remove the vent line where it attaches to the top radiator hose. b. Temporarily, re-attach the bottom radiator hose (loosely) and close the radiator drain petcock. c. Using the Water-Chaser and the Makita blower, blow air into the top radiator hose through the vent fitting. d. Blow air into the vent hose. e. Using about 1/2 of the flush HDC remaining in the gallon jug, chase both the vent fitting and the vent hose. (Save the remaining flush for step j.) f. Pull off the bottom radiator hose. g. Blow air into the top radiator hose through the vent fitting. h. Re-attach the vent hose to the top radiator hose. i. Continuing go to the heater source connection at the cylinder head jacket. j. Using the Water-Chaser, blow air into the cylinder head jacket, through the heater hose connection. Chase with the remaining HDC flush coolant. 12. If the engine is equipped for a coolant filter, install the non-chemical filter now. 3

13. Re-connect the source heater hose and the bottom radiator hose. 14. Close all drains. Make sure all connections are tight. 15. Fill the expansion tank with Evans HDC until it is half full. 16. Apply warning stickers to the expansion tank to prevent the use of water or water-based coolants. 17. Install the ResistorPac (P/N RP3-C70-MA2-0430) in series with the coolant temperature sensor as follows: C. Road Test Location of the coolant temperature sensor on top of the engine a. Un-clip the 2-wire connector from the coolant temperature sensor. b. Connect the 2 ResistorPac connectors to the two ends thus provided. c. Zip-tie the ResistorPac to a secure location and neaten the wires. 1. Drive the truck so as to heat up the cooling system, open the thermostats, and reach fanon temperature. The fan should turn on at approximately 230 o F. 2. Assuming the engine is now warm, add Evans HDC to the expansion tank until it is about 3/4 full. Use care when removing the cap but the only pressure comes from expanded liquid, not from steam. D. The Next Day 1. Add Evans HDC as necessary to bring the level in the expansion tank to about 1/3 full (cold). Monitor the cold level for several days and add small amounts if needed but don t exceed 1/3 full (cold). 2. Check the water content of the coolant using the Evans Refractometer P/N E2190. See next page for use instructions. The water content should be 3% or less. 4

Evans Refractometer Part# E2190 for Reading Water Content of Waterless Coolant VER 10Aug11 Readings are temperature sensitive, so calibrate before use: Calibrate the refractometer by placing a drop of new Evans Waterless Coolant (NPG+, NPG+c, NPGR, HDTC, or HDC) on the refractometer glass. Use the small screwdriver supplied with the instrument and set the reading to 55.7. Always clean the glass and the daylight plate with a clean, soft cloth between readings. Place a small amount of coolant, obtained from a location in the cooling system where the coolant is wellmixed, on the glass and close the daylight plate. ⁰Brix % water 55.7 0.0 55.0 1.0 54.7 2.0 54.4 3.0 54.0 4.0 53.5 5.0 53.0 6.0 52.5 7.0 If you have suggestions as to how this installation procedure might be improved, please contact Tom Light at 860-435-2418. 5
