ENGINE General The engines are each equipped with a fire detection and a fire extinguishing system. The systems are controlled from the ENGINE FIRE panel, which is located at the overhead panel. Fire and faults will be detected and the relevant alerts presented. Fire detection The fire detection system consists of dual sensing loops and a fire detection unit. Each sensing element forms a closed loop. The system remains serviceable even when an element is broken. The elements are monitored by the fire detection unit. If a pre-determined temperature is reached, a fire warning is presented. The fire warning remains active as long as the fire condition exists. Fire extinguishing Two fire extinguishing bottles are installed. The fire extinguishing agent can be discharged by one of the two fire handles. Each engine has its own fire handle. Pulling a fire handle will close the respective fire shut-off valves in the fuel and hydraulic systems. Rotating the pulled LH fire handle in direction DISCH 1 discharges AGENT 1 and DISCH 2 will discharge AGENT 2. For the RH fire handle AGENT 2 is discharged when rotating in direction DISCH 1 and visa versa. A latch is installed in each fire handle to prevent inadvertent operation. In case of fire, the latch will unlock automatically and the fire handle can be pulled. Manual override of the latch is possible by depressing the latch override button, installed behind the fire handle. Agent low pressure will be indicated by illuminated agent low pressure lights. Fire warning test A fire warning system test may be performed by selecting the FIRE TEST switch, located at the test panel, to LH or RH. When the fire test is done the following shall be observed: A repetitive triple chime. MWL s are flashing. Relevant FUEL lever light is illuminated. Relevant fire handle light is illuminated. L.ENG FIRE or R.ENG FIRE light will illuminate on the CAP. Page 1

CARGO AND TOILET COMPARTMENTS General The cargo compartments are each equipped with a smoke detection system. The toilet compartment is equipped with a smoke detection and a fire extinguishing system. There are no system controls at the flight deck. Smoke will be detected and the relevant alerts presented. Smoke detection The forward cargo, aft cargo, and toilet compartments each have a single smoke detector. If smoke is detected, a smoke warning is presented. The smoke warning remains active as long as the smoke condition exists. Fire extinguishing Two portable fire extinguisher bottles are installed for the forward and aft cargo compartments; one is stored in the front of the cabin and the other in the galley area. To extinguish a fire the nozzle of the in the cargo compartment walls. After activation of the portable fire extinguisher the agent flows through a pipe via the ceiling into the cargo compartment. One fire extinguisher bottle is installed in the waste container area in the toilet compartment. If there is a fire in the waste container, the agent will discharge automatically into the waste container. Smoke warning test A smoke warning system test may be performed by depressing the SMOKE TEST button located at the test panel. When the smoke test is done the following shall be observed: A repetitive triple chime. MWL s are flashing. The SMK FWD CARGO light SMK AFT CARGO light and the SMK TOILET light on the CAP are illuminated. Page 5

12-08.3. AUXILIARY POWER UNIT 12-08.3.1. General The APU is equipped with a fire detection and a fire extinguishing system. The systems are controlled from the APU panel. Fire and faults will be detected and the relevant alerts presented. 12-08.3.2. Fire detection The fire detection system consists of a single closed loop sensing element and a fire detection unit. The sensing element forms a closed loop and is monitored by the fire detection unit. The system remains serviceable even when the element is broken. If a predetermined temperature is reached, a fire warning is presented, the APU shuts down, the APU fuel shut off valve, the ventilation valve closes and the fire extinguishing system is activated automatically. The fire warning remains presented as long as the fire condition exists. 12-08.3.3. Fire extinguishing One fire extinguisher bottle is installed. The fire warning signal discharges the agent a few seconds after automatic APU shut down. This time delay is necessary to close the ventilation valve of the APU. A discharge switch, located at the APU panel, is provided to discharge the agent manually. In this case the APU fuel shut-off valve closes, and the APU shuts down, and the agent will be discharged immediately. Agent low pressure will be indicated by an AGENT low pressure light. 12-08.3.4. Fire warning test A fire warning system test may be performed by depressing the TEST button located at the APU panel. When the test is done the following shall be observed: A repetitive triple chime. MWL s are flashing. The FIRE light at the APU panel is illuminated. APU FIRE light on the CAP is illuminated. NOTE: During test the fire extinguishing system and the automatic shutdown of the APU are inhibited. Page 8

12-08.4. SYSTEM OPERATION 12-08.4.1. Engine fire extinguisher There is no mandatory sequence in using the engine fire extinguisher, but delay the discharge of the second bottle for at least 45 seconds. For use during on-ground emergency select DISCH 1 on the left-hand panel and also DISCH 1 on the right hand panel. 12-08.4.2. Portable fire extinguisher The BCF fire extinguishers can be used on all types of fire. The bottles are to be used for extinguishing a fire in the cargo compartment after a smoke warning: Lift the bottle and push the nozzle firmly into the extinguisher receptacle of the cargo hold. Be aware of backpressure. Empty the bottle. After ten minutes, discharge the second bottle to maintain agent concentration. Page 11
