From Graz with Love Summerworkshop in Graz, 3d to 7th of July 2018 Graz is a historically wonderful minted town that shows a very clear structure as a result of its continuous urban development. What we recognize nowadays is a fairly well shaped urban fabric based on all of the increments of urban design interventions. However, this development has not a strict logic, on the contrary it is an interaction of many different voluntary actions and planned interventions. Urban development leaves marks in the built fabric that survive many centuries or even millenniums. This phenomenon which in the relevant literature of urban morphology research is called continuity and permanence also shows up cracks, fissures or leaks. It is in fact possible to distinguish areas in the city that seem to be more likely stable and others that seem to be more likely unsteady. Such unsteady areas are in the focus of the international summer workshop 2018 in Graz. Four of these areas have been identified to be examined in order to propose urban design guidelines for their transformation, for their reinterpretation and reuse. All of these areas are situated at the interfaces of stable and unsteady urban structures, i.e. they represent intervening spaces that can be read in many different ways. The places are somehow vague in their spatial and functional appearances. The simple task would be to characterize them by means of urban design and architecture. Characterizing means before all to give them a new personality, still taking along the intrinsic functional, social, ecological and economical challenges that are on the agenda. Projects are expected to offer different solutions that are able to point out new interpretations of these interfaces in a sophisticated way. These solutions should be developed within an international discourse even if the teams would be organized by universities (maybe mixed, that is to decide on place). One of the main subjects of this workshop will therefore be the exchange between different theoretical and practical experiences and traditions in order to apply our backgrounds in a very colorful and efficient way. The main goal would still be to establish sketches for urban design projects that include all of the concerns mentioned above. Maybe we will get twenty-five or thirty individual projects, maybe only one which would be the result of a collective discussion. It is up to you.
