Bloor Street Clarifying the Precinct 9 8 Queen s Park 0 Future Development Site UofT Faculty of Music Hoskin Avenue THE PRECINCT Charles Street West UofT Faculty of Law The proposal represents a greening of the Precinct and creates a new urban clarity that enhances the image and visibility of both the faculties of Law and Music, and clarifies the ROM expansion site. Servicing, loading and parking, is removed from the surface to below grade and shared by both faculties and the ROM. The proposal distinguishes the University faculties from the Museum development, and re-establishes a new level of accessible pedestrian routes from Queen s Park through to Philosopher s Walk without the encumbrance of vehicular traffic. The scheme builds on the traditions of the The Faculty of Law and retains the historic Flavelle House as its formal entrance and major conference spaces. The expansion of the existing Bora Laskin Library gives contemporary expression to the faculty. A new entrance from Philosopher s Walk draws students and faculty from the University precinct to the west and south. Falconer Hall, shifted south and east and now a component of the Faculty of Music, presents a new more visible image on Queen s Park. The new Glass Music Room creates a new dramatic lobby for a new Recital Hall and the existing Edward Johnson Building. Our proposal for the redevelopment of the precinct takes a dramatic step in reversing this trend as the landscaped precinct is expanded and activated vertically at a number of levels as the green space of Philosopher s Walk is drawn and into Flavelle Court and through to the shared Arrival Courtyard for Law and Music, and into Queen s Park. RE-ESTABLISHING THE ARRIVAL COURT AND PRIORITIZING PEDESTRIANS: A NEW RAMP, FOR BOTH PARKING BELOW GRADE AND TRUCK SERVICING TO MUSIC, LAW AND THE ROM, IS STRATEGICALLY POSITIONED BETWEEN FALCONER HALL AND THE ROM DEVELOPMENT SITE. THE LOCATION ALLOWS LAW AND MUSIC TO RECONNECT ACROSS THE ARRIVAL COURTYARD AND RECREATES A SAFE PEDESTRIAN ENVIRONMENT. IT IS PROPOSED THAT THE ARRIVAL COURTYARD BE USED FOR FOR- MAL DROP OFFS TO LAW AND MUSIC. THE TWO ORIGINAL EAST WEST PEDESTRIAN ROUTES MOVE ACROSS THE UNIVERSITY AND MUSEUM CAMPUSES RESPECTIVELY WITHOUT CONFLICT OF VEHICLES. A Dramatic New Image for the Faculty of Law VIEW LOOKING NORTH FROM HOSKIN AVENUE AND PHILOSOPHER S WALK The Faculty of Law is expanded vertically, building over the footprint of the Bora Laskin Library. A new entrance from Philosopher s Walk enters into a double height Student Hall and the classroom level, with naturally-lit smart classrooms and a large lecture hall/moot Court. The Library remains on the second and third floors, shifted to the north and east, as a new wide promenade corridor with sweeping views to the Flavelle Court and Philosopher s Walk wraps the west and north elevations. A full fourth floor footprint and a two-storey bar building, set back from Philosopher s Walk, are added and house faculty and administrative offices. A series of engaging new social spaces are visible from the exterior, and include lounges, wide corridors with benches and views, a cafe with a terrace and amphitheatre type stairs, and outdoor terraces at the green roof level for discussion, gathering and reading. Double height living rooms at the south end of the bar offer faculty and graduate student lounges, meeting and reception spaces with unparallel views to the south. This double-wall elevation onto Hoskin creates a striking new image for Law from the University and the City. 0 HONOURING THE FACULTY HISTORY OF LAW EXPANSION - FALCONER AND FLAVELLE

The renewal of the overall precinct for Law, Music and the ROM is a statement of academic engagement and city building. This proposal is about revitalizing the precinct, creating dramatic new architecture that engages the University in the energy of the cultural renaissance, reconnecting and expanding the unique landscape of Philosopher s Walk within the University precinct, and making visible the active vitality of both Law and Music within the city. The new composition of the Faculty of Law engages the site in a dialogue. Accessibility, transparency and openness at both Queen s Park and Philosopher s Walk levels express the distinctive qualities of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto.
