We discussed and explored insects that feed on black flies. Pupils were asked to find ladybugs, explore and discuss the different stages of life (larvae, pupal/junior and adult). Questions asked by the pupils: How long does a ladybug live for? Why are ladybugs red? Why do they have wings? Why are the ladybug larvae white? Pupils were asked to research this questions and present answer at the following session. Pupils used magnifying glasses to investigate the different stages of life. The ladybugs were released onto the climbing bean crop to feed on the black flies. We discussed the different insects and their habitats. Yr 1 shared information on why worms are important for soil and plants. YR2 - YR6 Garden care.

5 11/10/2016 YR1 YR2 Harvest (Autumn/ Winter Crops) YR3 Seed investigation YR3-YR6 General garden care YR3- YR6 Lunch club Recap lesson 4 and present answers to the question asked on previous lesson (e.g. How long do ladybugs live for? Answer: up to 1yr). Pupils learnt about different seasons. Topics discussed: What is Harvest? Pupils sang the harvest song celebrating the season! What happens in autumn? Pupils shared, the leaves fall off the trees and change colours to vibrant orange, red and brown. The garden goes to sleep. Pupils discussed and explored different crops harvested in autumn. Pupils designed and decorated harvest boxes to showcase the crops at the harvest assembly. General garden care. 6 18/10/2016 YR 1 Seed germination YR 2 Compost and micro life YR3-YR6 General garden care YR3 YR6 Lunch club Recap lesson 5. Pupils gained knowledge of and investigated the different shapes and size of seeds and bulbs. Pupils explored where seeds are found in plants and the cycle of plant life from seed to flower. Pupils were encouraged to investigate plant structure. We discussed the process of germination, learning about the importance of light, temperature, sun and water. Pupils compared seed germination to the process of growth in humans. Pupils gained practical knowledge and explored the materials that make up compost/dirt. What are green and browns? What are the conditions required to create healthy compost i.e. Moisture, consistency, temperature and air. Pupils investigated micro life (worms, beetles, etc) that live under the surface and support the decomposition of the materials that create well balanced nutrient rich compost. 2

7 1/11/2016 YR1 Sowed broad beans YR2 Fed raised beds with own made compost YR4 YR5 Planted garlic bulbs YR3-YR6 General garden care YR3 YR6 Lunch club Recap session 6. Pupils sowed broad beans in trays indoors and planted garlic bulbs in beds 4 and 5 outdoors. Pupils fed the raised beds with compost that they made in previous lessons and added grass clippings to the compost heap as an activator. Pupils discussed plant food and the nutrients necessary for healthy plant and soil life. Pupils explored micro life and discussed the importance of the earthworm s population in soil. 8 8/11/2016 YR1 YR2 Sowed broad beans and spinach YR3 YR4 Planted more onion bulbs YR5 YR6 General garden care YR3 - YR6 Lunch club Recap lesson 7. Pupils sowed broad beans and spinach indoors in trays. Pupils actively prepared a raised bed before planting garlic and onion bulbs, feeding it with compost; raking in it to a thinner tilt and consolidating it. Pupils made up a song whilst undertaking the activity, called dab the earth! Pupils gained knowledge and discussed plant structure (roots, shoots and leaves) describing the process of photosynthesis and why leaves are green. At the end of the session we shared a fact about onions. They support the human body to fight against colds! 3

9 15/11/2016 YR1-2 Seed germination YR3-YR6 General garden care YR3-YR6 Lunch club Recap lesson 8. Pupils explored and gained knowledge of the different methods used in seed germination. Pupils planted harden off (process of condition adjustment, where seedlings are put out in the morning and brought back indoors later on the day, repeating for up to 10 days before planting in final location) mustard leaves onto bed 3. Pupils gained practical knowledge of the correct method for removing seedlings from trays and transplanting onto the growing beds. Pupils measured and correctly marked spaced wholes and planted garlic in growing bed 6. Pupils made cloches from plastic bottles to protect mustard seedlings from frost and pests. 4

Pupils transplanted kale seedlings from modules onto planters. Activities to support the tasks included dividing Yr 1T into 3 groups. Group 1 tty, group 2 the racers and group 3 the birds. Pupils also briefly discussed and investigated the potato root system and plant growth. Recap lesson 11. Pupils took part in practical activities and sowed sweet peas flowers in trays and broad beans in plastic boxes, indoors. Pupils gained practical experience in clearing the compost pile by removing leaves and placing them aside to create leaf mould.
