While not all inclusive, this guide is designed to provide information on Western Springs residential waste collection and recycling program. Please feel free to contact either Republic Services or the Village if you need additional information. The Village program is flexible and is designed to encourage recycling. These options allow you to select the type of service that best meets your household s needs and budget. Guidelines There is no limit to the number of items that may be put out for collection, however the following rules apply: SERVICE PLAN OPTIONS Back door refuse service is available as an alternative to purchasing waste stickers. COLLECTION GUIDELINES Waste Garbage cans and carts are not allowed at the curb. All waste set out for collection at the curb must be placed in a garbage bag with a service sticker attached. Three service plans with collection at a backdoor location are also available. Garbage set out for collection at a backdoor location may be placed in either a garbage can or bag. Bags and cans must not exceed 33 gallons in volume or 60 pounds in weight. Please check the container size before purchasing garbage can; oversize containers will not be collected. Yard Waste Yard waste will be collected from the curb from April through November. In order to be collected, a waste sticker must be attached to each waste bag. Yard waste may be placed in a biodegradable paper bag or a bundle. Bags must not exceed 33 gallons in volume or 60 pounds in weight. Brush and tree branches may be set out for collection provided they are securely bundled with jute twine or uncoated string. Bundles must have a waste sticker attached and may not exceed 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length or 60 pounds in weight. Individual branches may not exceed 2 inches in diameter. Village Leaf Collection The Village of Western Springs schedules the collection of leaf piles from the curb during a period in the fall beginning in late October. An informational postcard is mailed to residents in early October explaining the leaf removal program and schedule. Additional information on the curbside leaf collection program can be found at www.wsprings.com. Christmas Tree Collection Free Christmas Tree collection is offered during the first two full weeks of January on the regular service day. Trees must be free of tinsel and ornaments and should not be placed in bags. Large Household Items and Appliances Many bulk items and appliances that do not fit in a refuse container may be placed at the curb for pickup. Bulk items include chairs, tables and mattresses and other pieces of furniture that can be safely loaded; large items include refrigerators, stoves and water heaters. Rolls of carpeting and small amounts of construction debris may be set out for collection provided that they are securely tied in bundles not exceeding 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length or 50 pounds in weight. Stickers must be attached to each bundle, large household item, or large appliance.
