I ll give a quick synopsis of the club activities being planned or already scheduled for 2018. Here s to the start of another year where we have new and returning guest speakers who will share their succulent experience with the club. Presenting first will be this month s talk on rock gardening with which we will learn many new landscaping techniques. As other presentations are being finalized, do not hesitate to offer some of your input on topics and speakers for these talks. The schedule for the 2018 individual club show and sale is in available here in the newsletter. Get the dates on your calendar! Our monthly mini-show plant list will help you prepare your plants for that particular month. Please enter your plants in the show as you may be a winner for the Joe Wujcik pottery come December. Although the first club show and sale will start in February, the annual Huntington Botanical Garden s Desert Forum will be on the second weekend of this month. This event is not open to the public but is specifically offered to CSSA and its affiliate clubs and members. Therefore, as members, I hope you do take advantage of this opportunity to experience one of the Huntington s many prized and well-known collection. There are specific guidelines to enjoying this day-long forum but it is FREE for you when you follow the instructions. The details are also available here. The Gates CSS show and sale has a new venue for 2018 and it will be right here where we meet monthly. The planning committee has initiated some work already as this new location will have some new obstacles to consider. That said, we will certainly need more volunteers to assist during the next five months. The date for our show and sale will be May 11-12, 2018. See you all at our first meeting Regards, Phuc. Our Program This Month Marcia Tatroe "Rockin' with Cacti and Succulents." If you want to succeed with a collection of cacti and succulents outside, a rock garden is the ideal environment. Raised beds allow you to provide soil that is compatible to the plant s needs. Rocks help protect against weather extremes, while moderating temperature fluctuations enough to increase hardiness by a zone or two. This presentation considers stone selection, the basics of construction, and reveals rock garden tricks and techniques that will help make your garden flourish. BIO Marcia Tatroe writes the monthly "Mountain Garden Checklist" for Sunset Magazine and is a frequent contributor to Colorado Gardener and other gardening publications. Her photography and gardens have been featured in numerous books, magazines and nationally televised gardening shows. She lectures throughout the West focusing on garden design, rock gardening, xeriscape, and native plants. In her most recent book, Cutting Edge Gardening in the Intermountain West, she advocates using drought-tolerant and native plants and indigenous materials to create a gardening aesthetic unique to this region. Her garden was awarded Gold Habitat Hero status by the Audubon Rockies in 2017 as an outstanding urban wildscape. Mini Show 2017 Results Please remember to CLEARLY fill out the Mini show entry forms. Mammillaria Clusters By: Tom Glavich Mammillaria is one of the larger genera in the Cactus family, and one of the most variable, with some members remaining as solitary columns for their entire lives, some remaining as fingernail size solitary globulars, some clumped and heavily spined with hooks, straight sharp spines, or feathery soft spines. Although most Mammillaria are native to Mexico, some species in the genus can be found from Columbia to Kansas and California. With this wide distribution, the cultivation requirements obviously vary considerably. The species from the tropics and warmer areas are rarely tolerant of cold and damp. Those from the drier desert regions are also intolerant of continued damp, but can take considerable cold. With these restrictions aside, most Mammillaria are easy to grow. The secrets to good growth are a continued supply of fertilizer during the growing season, strong light, and maintenance of a clean and insect free growing environment. The white and densely spined species want full sun, and do best on a table unprotected (except from pro-longed heavy rain) all year long. The appearance of white mealy bug egg cases (Mammillaria s worst enemy) on the tips of the spines or the appearance of ants means that mealy bugs are sucking the sap and life of the plant. Immediate treatment is required, with a thorough washing, and spraying with an insecticide. Propagation of Mammillaria clusters is easy. Cuttings can be taken at any time during the growing season (April to early November), left to dry for a few days and replanted in a clean potting mix (pure pumice is even better). Rooting is rapid, with short white roots generally appearing after a couple of weeks. Mammillaria are one of the easiest species to grow from seed. The seeds are simply placed on top of a damp potting mix, covered with a light coating of gravel, placed in a plastic bag in bright light, but out of direct sun aallowed to germinate. Germination usually occurs in a week or 10 days. The seedlings can stay in the plastic bag for several weeks until they get large enough to survive unprotected, and should then be removed to a still shaded, but brighter and drier environment. Best results are obtained when the seeds are started in late March to late May. Mammillaria baumii is a densely spined species with wonderful large yellow flowers from Tamaulipas, Mexico Mammillaria duwei, shown above, is from central Mexico. Mammillaria standleyii can be found as either a single or clumping species, normal in cultivation. It is a rapid grower.

Aloe My favorite succulent plants are aloes. No other plant provides the garden presence of a majestic Aloe in bloom. They bloom when other plants suited for our climate are shivering in the cold. Their physical structure provides beautiful presence that adds backbone to a landscape. Whether one chooses a small aloe such as A. krapholiana or one of the many diminutive hybrids or a magnificent tree aloe such as A. dichotoma or A. ferox, the plants show the garden visitor an unmistakable Succulent Garden look. Many aloes are winter blooming plants. The blooms are large and colorful, flowering for several weeks. In particular, those from western South Africa and Namibia are in full bloom in the dead of our winter season. Others, and many of the hybrids bloom at other times of the year, so a carefully selected pallet of aloes will provide year round color. One of the many benefits of having aloes growing in our gardens is that they attract all species of hummingbirds. From our resident Anna s hummingbird to the several migratory species, we see them sipping nectar from the flower tubes all winter. They are extremely easy to grow in Southern California. Most of them love our weather and will thrive with just a small amount of supplemental irrigation. If one pays attention to the origin of the plant that is introduced to the garden, success is nearly guaranteed. Well draining soil is the main key to success. The tree aloes will, for the most part take a heavy frost with little or no damage and love our summer heat. Pests are the normal succulent pests and can be treated with the usual methods, except Aloe Mite. The galls produced by this group of mites are unattractive, but rarely kill the plant. There is a good write up on Aloe Mite and how to deal with it on the Gates web site. The Aloe Mite is part of the population of aloes throughout the world. If one is growing a selection of aloes, there will be Aloe Mite. Winter is the time to experience these plants full flower. Take advantage of the free day at the Huntington for Gates members as well as the Aloe Walk at Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center and the wonderful plantings at the UCR Botanic Gardens. Aloe speciose Aloe ferox Aloe globuligemma
