Giving WEEE new life.
Using smart technology to recycle smart technology. Each year, 170 million new electrical items are purchased in the UK. Currently only one-third are recycled. All organisations have a legal responsibility, as part of their duty of care, to ensure that any Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) that they manufacture, distribute or use, are disposed of without harming the environment. Investing in electrical recycling The electricals that we use every day are incredibly complex and made from hundreds of different materials, this makes recycling electricals extremely testing. We are constantly looking at ways to help our customers increase their recycling rates. To meet this challenge, Viridor invests in state-of-the-art recycling facilities. Our UK based facilities work like factories in reverse. In comes a mix of electricals; TVs, hairdryers, radios and white goods; and out goes individual materials ready for remanufacturing; glass, plastic and metals. Our facilities are currently recycling 90% of the electrical items that are received. With one site alone, diverting over 50,000 tonnes of material from landfill in the last two years.

A typical Viridor WEEE processing plant Manual pre-sorting TVs, fridges and assorted electrical goods are collected separately and then follow similar paths. Assorted electricals Electrical goods such as vacuums, computer game consoles, toasters, irons etc. are placed in a rotating-chain chamber (like a giant food processor) that breaks up the items. Cathode ray TVs One thousand TVs are disassembled every day. Manual sorting Hazardous components and valuable resources are removed by hand. Mechanical sorting Magnets are used to extract metals. Cathode ray tubes are removed and lasers are used to slice off the glass facias. Mechanical processing Our smart technology then separates the materials into components such as wire, circuitry, metals and plastics. The empty plastic casings are then sent off for recycling. Accreditations All our electrical recycling facilities are authorised approved treatment facilities (AATFs), accredited by the Environment Agency (England) and SEPA (Scotland). All of our sites across the UK operate under the highest quality, environmental, energy efficiency and health and safety standards certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and OHSAS 18001 respectively.
