03/design q&a: piero lissoni Teatro Nazionale Milan Q: Why did you chose blue for the upholstery which is not a traditional theatre colour? A: The blue was chosen because of the modern and elegant nature of the theatre rather than traditional. Also a hint of green was added to accent interiors diversifying the ambiance in order to create movement and dynamism. Q: This is your first theatre project, have you had fun during planning process? A: At the beginning the project was really amusing because the scope of work was large, including the complete demolition of much of the building. Later, the project was changed and we had to restructure the existing architecture, a long and difficult process. Q: Can you let us know about the relation you established between buildings historical and new façade. A: A contrast of relation. The main façade was restored to its original state; exactly the same as built in 1922 while the rest of the renovation process was realized on a contemporary scale. Q: Teatro Nazionale was abandoned for many years. How you managed major redevelopment plan that mod-ernize, renovate, and open up the building to public with latest technologies. A: The interior of the building was completely demolished. This allowed us to bring in a fresh and modern design equipped with the latest technologies.
03/design q&a: piero lissoni Pierre Hotel NYC The Grand Suite 2111 Q: Pierre Hotel is a landmark hotel building in New York city. How you confronted this historical and institutional project with your purest contemporary style and vision. A: I wanted to create and introduce a new hospitality experience reestablishing the spirit of the past across modern design, pure sophistication and silence, the design of the Grand Suite 2111 was concepted for the gentlemen traveler. Contrast is created between the comfort of technology and the grandioseness of the selected artworks and objects. As always this is outstanding in my design philosophy. Q: The Grand Suite 2111 that you have designed is a perfect example of Made in Italy with a fine selection of Italian loose and fixed furniture. Can you tell us more about your experience in New York with Poltrona Frau Group contract division. A: In collaboration with Poltrona Frau Group contract division we developed and realized a fully custom made luxury suite: A substantial library in white lacquer, a historical fireplace and a sofa in leather are leading the living room. While selected artwork from Taj Hotel s private collection recalls the history, 20th century icons from Cassina and contemporary pieces from Cappellini emphasize the multi ethnic soul of the hotel.
