FURNITURE & LIGHTING Birgit Israel and Richard Taylor have lovely pieces. Giorgetti makes beautiful Italian furniture with unbelievable attention to quality and form. Nature produces the most amazing colours and colour combinations that never cease to give me enjoyment. Kew Gardens is a particular favourite, especially for its amazing orchids. It is the next best thing to the jungles of South America. DESIGN DIRECTIONS It has been interesting to see some of the contemporary interpretations of our chinoiserie designs in recent years. Amazonia motif that we created with Edgardo Osorio at Aquazzura is marvellous. A bespoke framed kitchen would usually range from around 40,000 TOP RIGHT In this Barnes of Ashburton bespoke kitchen, a custommade dog bed is positioned beside an Everhot range cooker (just seen) for consistent cosiness. A similar classic kitchen, painted here in Farrow & Ball s Ringwold Ground, starts from 25,000. RIGHT Make the most of unused corner space with a Magic Basket Corner from Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets. Costing from 275, it allows for easier access for those hard-to-reach items at the back of the unit. W STORE & ORDER Create a tranquil feel in the kitchen by investing in dedicated storage solutions that will enhance any elegant interior hatever size and shape a kitchen, efficient storage is key. Having everything in its place enables the cook to have copious amounts of work surface to prepare and cook meals. It also means that everything can be accessed more easily, from crockery and cutlery to dried and fresh ingredients. Carefully planned storage will also maintain the intended look and feel of a kitchen design, without clutter. A good kitchen designer will discuss the householder s needs and run through the requirements of typical day in order to maximise the room s potential. Bespoke joinery specialists Artichoke, for instance, will take a full survey of a client s existing kitchen, and its contents to determine what needs to be stored. We will often place items into the design to check it provides enough space, explains director Andrew Petherick, and will always survey unusual items to ensure they fit. STORAGE OPTIONS re are many options to choose from such as dressers, shelves, corner units, pan drawers, tray racks, floor-to-ceiling cabinets, islands, banquette seating with storage inside and even wine cellars installed beneath the floor. One of the most sought-after is a free-standing larder or pantry unit. A pantry provides all the storage space a kitchen requires, says Leanne Tranter, designer at Harvey Jones Kitchens. Featuring deep drawers for pans and utensils, spice and wine racks for storing jars and bottles, a granite cold shelf for food preparation and cleverly concealed removable trays, the pantry can offer a complete storage solution. Tranter indicates that the appeal harks back to more traditional values in living, especially with the current interest in home cooking and growing your own food. Big or small, a larder is the perfect space in which to store homemade jams, pickles, English Home has a distinctively English voice, and no other British interiors magazine has so many international subscribers, all paying a premium rate. ABOVE Kitchen designers Figura have integrated wine storage into the floor of this beautiful country kitchen. But having an office in a palace also helps Despite the still heavy Gallic accent, Raymond Blanc has lived in Britain for over 40 years and has enthusiastically made England his adoptive homeland. Editor, Kerryn Harper-Cuss went to meet the man we have embraced as a national treasure D riven is a word often bandied around in the context of people and their careers but in the case of Raymond Blanc I cannot think of any term more fitting. His much lauded achievements in the championing of gastronomy, horticulture and hospitality have undoubtedly had a deep and significant impact upon our country s aspirations, and have directly precipitated chain reactions in English culture. His passion for provenance and seasonality has been pivotal in our increasing national focus on celebrating local, regional and timely culinary ingredients. His loving creation of Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons over the past 30 years, with its inspirational gardens and interiors, is widely regarded to have resulted in one of the most beautiful luxury country house hotels in Britain. All this even before you add Le Manoir s two Michelin-starred restaurant status into the equation. Yet here is a man whose mission is clearly not quite finished. From the moment we meet, it is obvious that Raymond Blanc (or RB as his team refer to him) is a man with an insatiable appetite for life he does not so much arrive as surge into the room a vigorous, engaging force of energy intent on making the most of every moment of conversation and sweeping you along in the most captivating way. We tend to think of his genius as a chef and this passion remains absolute but what many are not aware of is just how involved Blanc is in the design of the 62 THE 62 THE TEH UK AUG15 Raymond Blanc At home with.indd 62-63 A rare moment of stillness as Raymond Blanc is persuaded to sit for a portrait, and views the famous lavender walkway through the windows at Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons.
