Doing so can cause permanent damage to the canister filter. Carefully check the canister filter after installation to ensure that the canister filter and the tubing connections to the canister to the aquarium are not wet. Prior to maintenance on any electrical aquarium appliance or maintenance to the aquarium, you must disconnect all electrical aquarium devices. Use this product for its intended use only. Do not plug into an extension cord and/or a power strip. Plug directly to a GFCI outlet only. Verify that tubing and the canister filter are not in contact with moving parts or hot parts, such as heaters. Routine maintenance is required to ensure the maximum performance and longevity of the ULTRA CLEAN Rio Canister Filter. See maintenance guidelines. A drip loop must be used with all electrical aquarium devices. The drip loop is the part of the cord which hangs below the level of the receptacle. See diagram below. The national code requires that all aquarium appliances be plugged into a GFCI outlet. Never yank or pull the cord from the electrical outlet. Do not operate if the plug or wire is damaged. If using a unit with a Ultra-violet light, never operate unless the canister filter is fully assembled. Failure to do will cause damage to eyes and or skin. Models with an ultra violet sterilizer: UV bulbs should be replaced every 6 month for maximum efficiency. Prior to operation verify that the quartz sleeve is in good working order. This product may contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and or birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash your hand after handling this product. INSTALLATION OF UV LIGHT TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Verify that the canister filter is unplugged and the power button is in the off position. 2. Verify that the shut off valve is in the off position. 3. Remove the filter cover. 4. Remove the UV bulb from the box. When removing from the box use a clean towel. Do not touch the glass tube. 5. Align the bulb pins with the socket in the rubber endcap and press into the endcap. 6. Insert the bulb into the quartz sleeve. 7. Install the flow through reaction chamber. 8. Now install motor housing on the canister filter. 9. Follow directions for filter installation. 10. Once the filter is running turn the switch the UV light on. 11. To verify that it is working you will see a slight glow within the motor housing. 12. Install filter cover. OFF Position Warning! The UV lamp used in this unit produces harmful ultraviolet radiation. Never look directly at lamp as damage to eyes will occur. Always disconnect the power supply before opening the unit for service. Failure to do so will expose the user to harmful UV radiation. NOTE The 6-watt T5 UV bulb needs to be replaced every 8,000-9,000 hours (yearly). This will insure optimum performance. Before doing any maintenance on the ultraviolet sterilizer, disconnect from the power supply and turn switch off. Only in rare situations does the quartz sleeve ever have to be removed. If necessary remove the UV light bulb and rotate counter clock wise and remove. After removed use a soft clean cloth to gently remove any excess grim and/or debris. Reassemble using a small amount of silicone o-ring lubricant placed on the o-ring prior to installation. NOTE: Please keep the inside of quartz sleeve dry at all time. Problem 1 Canister will not prime or pump water Reasons and Solutions: 1. The open end of the spray bar is not capped. 2. The intake and the output are switched. Connect the intake to the IN and the output to the OUT. 3. Intake strainer is clogged and needs to be cleaned. 4. The aquarium is not full of water. 5. Impeller is broken and needs to be changed. Problem 2 Excessive noise Reasons and Solutions: 1. It is not uncommon to have a rattling noise during setup and while the unit is trying to remove the air in the canister. 2. The intake of the canister filter is sucking in air. Relocate all air stones and air-powered ornaments to an area of the aquarium away from the intake of the Canister Filter. 3. Filter media is dirty and needs to be cleaned. 4. Air leak verify that all tubing are attached properly to the U-shape intake/output tubes and or valves. Failure to do so can cause leaks or create a venturi where air is being sucked into the tubing/canister thus prohibiting the canister to prime and or excess air bubbles discharging from the output. 5. Intake strainer is clogged and needs to be cleaned. 6. Impeller is broken and needs to be changed. 7. Shake the canister to help remove excess air. Problem 3 slow water flow Reasons and Solutions: 1. Filter medians are too tightly packed in the median tray or they are too old. 2. Canister housing and tubing need to be cleaned. 3. Kinks in either the intake or output tubes. 4. The intake strainer is clogged and needs to be cleaned. 5. Impeller is broken and needs to be changed. Problem 4 leaking water Reasons and Solutions: 1. Verify that the collar on the valve and tubing connectors are over the tubing. A cleancut tube is essential for a good seal. 2. A small amount of silicone lubricant needs to be added to the motor housing o-ring. 3. Tubing is cut to short preventing good seal where tubing connects to the hardware. 4. Motor housing o-ring is soiled or old and needs to be replaced. 12 13

INSpEcTING ANd CHANGING THE IMpELLER 1. Clean impeller every time the canister filter is maintained. 2. Remove the impeller well cover by turning it counter clockwise. 3. Remove the impeller and inspect it for damage, make sure that the magnet is not cracked. If it is damaged, replace it with the new Impeller. 4. Inspect the impeller shaft for cracks or uneven wear. If it is damaged, replace it with the new impeller shaft. 5. Inspect the opening where the impeller sits for sludge or debris build-up. This may prevent the impeller from turning properly. If it is dirty, clean it before replacing the impeller. 6. Carefully put the impeller shaft and impeller back in place and replace the impeller well cover. 7. Make sure the rubber endcaps on both ends of the impeller ceramic shaft are in place. MAINTENANCE Regular maintenance of the ULTRA CLEAN Rio Canister Filter is required to ensure full water flow and optimum filtering performance, Clean or change filtering media at least every 4 weeks. NOTE: Decreased water flow is a sign of clogged filter media. 1. Unplug the Canister Filter from the GFCI outlet. NOTE: Prior to maintenance on any electrical aquarium appliance or maintenance to the aquarium, you must disconnect all electrical aquarium devices. 2. Flip the shut off valve to the off position. 3. Disconnect the shut off valves and tubing pipe adapter. 4. Remove the canister and place in an area proper for maintenance (such as a sink). 5. Flip out all latches and release the motor housing. Now the motor housing can be lifted off the canister housing. 6. Remove the large filter tray cover. Remove the media tray one at a time using the handle. Important: Media trays must be placed back in the order they were removed. 7. Replace filter pads and filter media. 8. Remove the impeller cover. 9. Remove the impeller and impeller shaft and clean with water. With a small brush clean the inside of the impeller well. 10. Do not clean with soap. 11. Reassemble. 12. Apply a small amount of silicone sealant to the motor housing o-ring to ensure a good seal. 13. Install according to the directions for installation and start up.
