Extending Pavement Life Through Pavement Preservation Techniques, Strategies, and Preventative Maintenance Lakeville, February 13 Detroit Lakes, February 15 Duluth, February 27 Roads Scholar Credit: 1 Hosted by Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), Center for Transportation Studies, University of Minnesota. Sponsored and subsidized by Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Facilitated by the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, University of Minnesota.

Extending Pavement Life Through Pavement Preservation Techniques, Strategies, and Preventative Maintenance February 13, 2018, City of Lakeville Water Treatment Facility, 18400 Ipava Avenue, Lakeville, MN 55044 February 15, 2018, Holiday Inn, 1155 Hwy 10 East, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501 February 27, 2018, Holiday Inn, 200 West 1st Street, Duluth, MN 55801 Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Workshop is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Workshop Description This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the available technology and tools that make implementing a pavement preservation program feasible. An effective pavement preservation program encompasses a full range of maintenance strategies, as well as rehabilitation treatments, with the goal of enhancing pavement performance (ride, quality, safety, service life, etc.). Pavement preservation takes the maintenance process one step further by carefully choosing and timing pavement maintenance applications to extend the life of the pavement. Additionally, the workshop will introduce some new preventive maintenance technologies and allow time for specific discussions around attendees needs. Topics Covered Techniques for asphalt pavement evaluation, including pavement condition rating Discussion of how to select the best maintenance strategy: choose the right treatment at the right time on the right project, and measures to track performance Overview of the various maintenance treatments and their construction practices: patching, crack seal/fill, fogseal, chipseal, double chipseal, slurry seal, microsurfacing, thin overlay, bonded thin overlay, and new technologies and processes Asset management concepts in raising your pavement network performance on a limited budget Best practices in pavement preservation applications Targeted pavement preservation topics specific to the interests of each class attendees

Potential Topics Safety considerations Stripping/delamination under chipseals Airport pavements Preserving cul-de-sacs, parking lots, trails Material considerations: emulsions and aggregate Equipment considerations QC/QA and specifications to assure success Process selection Others provided by attendees to address specific concerns. Who Should Attend Engineers, managers, supervisors, and technicians responsible for asphalt pavement maintenance, design, and construction. Workshop Instructors Dan Wegman, PE, Braun Intertec, has worked with DOTs and local government agencies in several states with pavement rehabilitation and preventive maintenance strategies. As a former MnDOT construction and bituminous engineer, and with over a dozen years working as a private sector material supplier, Wegman provides technical insight with respect to materials, construction, and implementation. Tom Wood, Pavement Specialist, WSB & Associates Inc., has worked in road construction/maintenance for over 40 years. He has a blend of public and private service experience. For the last 18 years he has worked on pavement preservation treatments specializing in emulsion base methods. He also teaches classes for numerous LTAPs and the National Center for Pavement Preservation. Mr. Wood retired from MnDOT early in July 2016 with over 28 years of service. He currently works for WSB & Associates, continuing to promote the use of pavement preservation as method to extend pavement s useful life. Registration and Fees The registration fee includes lunch, coffee breaks, and program materials. A refund of the registration fee, minus a $30 cancellation fee, will be made if cancellation is received five working days prior to the workshop.
