Lesson 1: Key holding roles and responsibilities 1 hour Day 1 0830-0930 Aim: To discuss the roles and responsibilities of the key holding officer. Describe the role of a key holding officer; Describe the responsibilities of a key holding officer; Identify the key skills of a key holding officer; Identify key organisations within the industry; Recognise the key issues considered within BS7984. Lesson 2: Health and safety at work 2.5 hours Day 1 0930-1200 Lunch 1200-1300 Aim: To discuss health and safety. Identify the main areas of the Health and Safety legislation; Explain who is covered by the Health and Safety at Work Act and the responsibilities they have under the act; Explain COSHH, RIDDOR, noise regulation, manual handling, reporting practices and the Fire Safety Order 2005, smoking regulations; List the most common types of accident or injury in the workplace and identify such hazards; Identify specific Health and Safety risks to drivers and key holders; Recognise the cost of accidents; Identify the different types of safety sign used in the workplace and the information provided on them; Recognise the precautions that can be taken against infectious diseases, and the responses if infected; Identify the types of PPE supplied to protect a security officer. Lesson 3: Risk assessments 1.5 hours Day 1 1300-1430 Aim: To gain an understanding of risk assessments. Learning outcomes: On completion of this lesson trainees will be able to: Explain the fundamentals of risk assessment; Identify the risks associated with entering a site; Explain the principle of a dynamic risk assessment; List key risk indicators when assessing entry to a site; Identify methods for minimising and managing risks; Reporting risk. Lesson 4: Key holding and the law 2.5 hours Day 1 1430-1700 Aim: To discuss the law in England and Wales. Recognise the difference between civil and criminal law; Recognise how SOCPA (2005) affects the key holding officer and define the offences of trespass, aggravated trespass, theft, robbery, burglary, aggravated burglary, assault, criminal damage; State the actions to be taken by a key holding officer on discovering a trespasser; Demonstrate procedures for making an arrest and explain the procedures for holding suspects whilst awaiting the arrival of the authorities. Lesson 5: Key management 0.5 hours Day 1 1700-1730 Aim: To discuss key management within the context of British Standard best practice. Explain procedures for the initial receipt of keys from a customer; Recognise the process of controlling keys; Describe the procedures for the return of keys to a customer; Describe the requirements for key storage in a vehicle. Lesson 6: Electronic protection systems 2.5 hours 0830-1100 Aim: To develop an appreciation of intruder alarm systems. Recognise the various types of electronic protective system that a key holding response officer will be required to operate; Explain the component parts, function and grading of intruder alarm systems along with the principal causes of false alarms; Explain the component parts, function and grading of fire alarm systems along with the principal causes of false alarms; Explain the key features, components, concerns and terminology regarding CCTV systems. Lesson 7: Maintaining the security of premises 1.5 hours 1100-1230 Lunch 1230-1330 Aim: To discuss key holding response to events and maintaining the security of premises Identify the events to which a key holding officer might respond; Describe the process of patrolling; Identify how to deal with issues that might arise; Secure the premise after attendance; Recognise the importance of effective reporting. Lesson 8: Crime scene preservation 1 hour 1330-1430 Aim: To discuss best practice in regard to preserving evidence and crime scenes. Explain the role of a key holding officer in protecting evidence; Explain what is meant by contamination of evidence and how to avoid contaminating evidence; State the procedures for cordoning off an area, preserving evidence and controlling access into and from a scene of crime; Explain the terms continuity of evidence or chain of custody. Lesson 9: Communication skills 1.5 hours 1430-1600 Aim: To discuss communication skills and reporting. Explain the process and ABC of communication; Explain how we communicate and the methods used by security staff to communicate around the site; Explain the importance of good communication and list the barriers to effective communication; Demonstrate the use of the phonetic alphabet and demonstrate the use of radio equipment; Identify the different documents used by a security officer during the course of their duties, explain the importance of completing each of the documents used and demonstrate the completion of each; Explain the use of the security officer s notebook; Explain the distribution of key documents; Describe the handover/takeover routine. Lesson 10: Vehicle management and navigation 0.5 hours 1600-1630 Aim: To discuss and understand the duties and responsibilities of a key holding officer whilst in charge of a vehicle. Describe the vehicle checks that must be performed; Explain the attributes you must possess when driving; Make efficient plans for journeys; Identify key features of best practice and self-preservation.
