ABOUT LIA At LIA, we believe in the importance of sharing new ideas about lasers. In fact, laser pioneers such as Dr. Arthur Schawlow and Dr. Theodore H. Maiman were among LIA s original founders who set the stage for our enduring mission to promote laser applications and their safe use through education, training and symposia. LIA was formed in 1968 by people who represented the heart of the profession a group of academic scientists, developers and engineers who were truly passionate about taking an emerging new laser technology and turning it into a viable industry. Recognized as the professional society for fostering lasers, laser applications and safety worldwide, LIA serves industrial, educational, medical, research and government communities across the globe. Our members are comprised of laser researchers, manufacturers, integrators and end users all working together to increase the use and safe application of laser technologies through LIA s products and services. $160 $140 LIA Members ANSI Z136.8 Safe Use of Lasers in Research, Development, or Testing (2012) 118A ISBN# 978-0-912035-95-6 The brand new ANSI Z136.8 standard is the latest offering in a range of vital resources for laser personnel. The Z136.8 standard arose from the increasing reliance on lasers in labs and other research-designated areas. It was developed to distinguish it from the parent ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers document by including two additional hazard analysis areas - beam path and beam interaction; and summarizing proper procedure in unrestricted, restricted, controlled, exclusion and inaccessible locations. In addition, the Z136.8 allows the use of alignment eyewear, non-certifi ed lasers, export controls, warning signs, including sample audit forms for labs and program reviews; and deletion of some CDRH-based control measures. This standard includes policies and procedures to ensure laser safety in any area where research, development and testing is performed, including Universities, product development labs, private and government research labs (e.g., National Laboratories) and product testing settings (soft bound, 127 pages). REVISED! ANSI Z136.3 Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care (2011) 113 ISBN#978-0-912035-69-7 ANSI Z136.3 is recognized as the definitive document on laser safety in all health care environments. It provides guidance for the safe use of lasers for medicine, diagnostic, cosmetic, preventative and therapeutic applications in any location where bodily structure or function is altered or symptoms are relieved. Lasers used in these applications are incorporated into $150 $130 LIA Members an apparatus, which includes a delivery system, a power supply, mechanical housing and associated liquids and gases as required for operation of the laser. The entire apparatus is referred to as a health care laser system (HCLS), and this standard is intended for use by all personnel associated with the installation, operation, calibration, maintenance and service of the system. A must for hospitals, medical centers, spas, veterinary offi ces and clinics using lasers! This rapid change in the pattern of use of health care laser systems has made it essential to have a current document to guide us in the approach to the safe use of these systems. The ANSI Z136.3 represents many necessary compromises to make it fi t the needs of this diverse population of users of these medical laser systems (soft bound, 117 pages). ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers (2007) 106A ISBN# 978-0-912035-65-9 The parent document and cornerstone of the Z136 series of laser safety standards, the ANSI Z136.1 provides guidance for the safe use of lasers and laser systems by defi ning control measures for each of the four laser classes. As a result of advances in laser devices and applications, it is recommended that this standard be obtained by all laser end users $193 $173 LIA Members and is a must for users of class 3B and 4 lasers. Since the ANSI Z136.1 standard is the foundation of laser safety programs for industrial, military, medical and educational applications nationwide, revisions to the previous version can and will affect the training and practice of laser safety in these environments. This standard includes laser hazard classifi cation defi nitions, requirements for refresher training and updates to medical surveillance requirements. The ANSI Z136.1 standard provides an updated and thorough set of guidelines for implementing a safe laser program. In addition, the standard covers laser safety program provisions including the duties and responsibilities of the LSO, non-beam hazards, administrative/ engineering control measures, defi nitions, optical density, nominal hazard zone (NHZ), MPEs, accessible emission limit (AEL), bioeffects, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and example calculations (soft bound, 276 pages).
