Sofa in Sight + SCP Editions A/W Collection 2015 SCP Classics Continuing in the celebratory spirit of our 30 th anniversary year, we are pleased to present a special printed supplement, created to give an overview of SCP activity in the second half of 2015. Inside you will find: Sofa in Sight A collection that explores ideas in modern upholstery making through six different sofas. Designs by Michael Anastassiades, Konstantin Grcic, Faudet-Harrison, Matthew Hilton, Lucy Kurrein and Terence Woodgate. The sofa is a piece of furniture rooted in Western culture, in ideas of comfort and in thoughts about the modern home. How did the typology come into being? How are they made? What is their future? We wondered how six very different designers would respond to exactly the same brief: Create a new sofa design using our specialist upholstery making factory in Norfolk, where we only use renewable materials, traditional techniques and highly skilled craftsmen. With thanks to world-leading textile company Kvadrat for supplying the fabrics and to Farrow for selecting the colour scheme. SCP Editions SCP Editions are a treat for our thirtieth anniversary. They are a collection of products made in small batches using unconventional materials, or specialist manufacturing techniques. Designs by Oscar Coakley, Reiko Kaneko, Sarah Kay, Peter Marigold, Michael Marriott, Andrea Stemmer and Donna Wilson. Theses objects acknowledge the history SCP has of working with those who are perhaps closer to being artists than designers, and the interplay between the two disciplines which has been evident throughout time. A/W Collection 2015 Three new products to SCP, the Piechart upholstered bench, the Crosscut shelving system and the Nami pendant light. All of them, to varying degrees, see the designers developing ideas they have already begun with SCP. SCP Classics We launched the first collection of SCP Classics at the 2015 Milan Salone del Mobile earlier this year. We present an introduction to the collection. Sofa in Sight Rochester Michael Anastassiades A design that grew from an inquisitiveness about how behaviour is changing on public furniture, where people are now inclined to be working or engaging with media on personal devices. Rochester creates a comfortable enclosure for the user, a place for a little privacy. The design language is strict and formal, but comfort has also been made a priority. The sofa frame sits on a wooden plinth, with a small gap recessed between the two elements for visual lightness. For lumber support, a triangular wedge cushion is designed into the back of the seat. A piping detail on the upholstery parts and a gentle chamfer on all the inside edges of the feet show the attention to detail in the design. An accompanying ottoman follows the same language as the sofa, but is slightly firmer so it can be used as a seat, foot rest or a side table. The sofa has a solid beech frame with 7mm square solid oak edging on the oak-veneered side and back panels. The frame has zig-zag springs, jute webbing, hessian straps and is covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibres, animal hair and wool. The plinth base is made from oak. Made in Norfolk, England. W128 H80 D96 cm Ottoman: W60 H30 D60 cm Continuous Faudet-Harrison Taking some inspiration from upholstery designs of the 1920s, Faudet-Harrison have created a very simple sofa, notable for the use of continuous curves and a straight line sewn lengthways down the middle of the piece. It is made from a European hardwood frame, zig-zag springs, jute webbing, hessian straps and covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibres, animal hair and wool. The legs are made from oak or grey anodised aluminium. The back rises up in a straight line vertically from the bottom of the frame, but gently curves round at either end of the design. The seat is very deep and has a pleasing line detail stitched into it. Continuous is a sophisticated design that offers a number of possibilities in configuration. It is visually light, well-proportioned and ideal for contract environments. Made in Norfolk, England. W223 H85 D76 cm

Solstice Matthew Hilton Solstice is a relaxed design that developed from the seed of an idea to create a fully upholstered piece that sits directly on the floor at the back. It is made from a European hardwood frame, zig-zag springs, jute webbing, hessian straps and covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibres, animal hair and wool. It has two pure duck feather cushions and the legs come in bronze or dull chrome finished steel. Subtle piping and seam details on the arms and cushion faces act as a counterpoint to the swooping curve of the design. Hilton imagines sofas and armchairs as big sculptures in our everyday living spaces, and approaches their design as such, creating shapes and forms that are somehow innate, quietly but confidently occupying space. Made in Norfolk, England. W220 H95 D73 cm Tepee Lucy Kurrein A design that re-interprets the sofa typology. It is inspired by the simplicity of the hammock, the possibilities of strong industrial fabrics and the tactile elegance of high fashion. Kurrein felt that a modern sofa is often expected to contain strong lines and a firmness that goes against what fabrics naturally do, which is to move, crease, fold and bend. By working with a sewing machine and scale models only, she has created a design that works with the natural behaviour of fabric, rather than against it. The design has a solid oak frame, a sprung drop-in seat and cylindrical oak legs, which extend upwards to the height of the back and become the frame supports. Placed over the supports is a pure cotton canvas, creating a sling for the densely filled duck feather seat and back cushions. The sofa has an unfamiliar visual language and is exceptionally comfortable. Lucy Kurrein has created a boundary pushing sofa, one which befits her inquisitive, single-minded approach to design. Made in Norfolk, England. W231 H72 D74 cm

Pasha Konstantin Grcic The original Pasha was a design Konstantin Grcic worked on for SCP in the 1990s, but it did not go beyond the prototype stage. This design revisits the idea of the original, which was to create a deep sofa with a particularly reclined sitting position. This version is made up of two sections, a fully upholstered elasticated webbed base, which in profile has a geometric curved line reminiscent of an extended ski-jump, and two polyester filled upholstered pads that sit on top of the frame. The pads contain tubular strips that run horizontally along the length of the design and are secured in place by a steel bar that is sewn into the top end and hangs over the back edge of the frame as a weight. The sofa is armless and the pad sections run slightly over the edge of the base at each end, with a dividing line running vertically in the centre of the seat. It comes with two feather filled cushions. The Pasha looks equally at home in public or domestic environments. It is neatly proportioned, firm, comfortable and very tactile, made in a noticeably textured fabric. The design blends strong angular lines and natural curves, creating softness in a formal typology. Made in Norfolk, England. Linear Terence Woodgate An assured design that seamlessly blends the arm, back and seat together to create one elegant form. A desire to return to a more intuitive way of making led Woodgate to begin this piece in modelling clay, using only his hands and carving tools to create it. Once the design was sculpted in clay, it was then scanned back into a computer to be refined, using the process of reverse engineering to complete it. It is made from a European hardwood frame, zig-zag springs, jute webbing, hessian straps and covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibres, animal hair and wool. It has a fully covered frame and an upholstered zig-zag sprung seat. The back is low, with a beautiful curve that extends from arm to arm. It sits on slimline flanged aluminium feet. Woodgate believes that designers need to use every possible tool at their disposal to create lasting and timeless pieces. Linear uses intuition and technology in equal measure. Made in Norfolk, England. W250 H90 D51 cm W157 H85 D64 cm

In keeping with the celebratory spirit of SCP s thirtieth year, our founder Sheridan Coakley found it difficult to resist the temptation to create some unconventional products, things more like conceptual propositions than objects of mass production. He gave a number of SCP designers a free hand to decide what material, scale and form they would like to work with. They were welcome to work with their own hands, utilise specialist manufacturing techniques, or even make individual appropriations from elsewhere in the palette of things that exist already. Editions from Oscar Coakley, Reiko Kaneko, Sarah Kay, Peter Marigold, Michael Marriott, Andrea Stemmer and Donna Wilson. Each SCP Edition is numbered and signed by the designer. The resulting collection is called SCP Editions, or things we might not otherwise have made. These objects acknowledge the history SCP has of working with those who are perhaps closer to being artists than designers, and the interplay between the two disciplines which have been evident throughout time. SCP Editions Italy, Brazil, Finland & India Michael Marriott A set of marble and granite topped side tables with a checker plate steel base and a central table stem. Marriott has used four different types of marble and granite, with each table named after the country in which it originates. Carrara from Italy, Baltic from Finland, Verde Rajasthan from India and Ubatuba from Brazil. Italy has a pink powder-coated finish on the base, while the others versions are in galvanised steel. The tops have a slight chamfer on their top and bottom edges. Made in London and Worcestershire. L60cm D40cm H35 cm Vita Andrea Stemmer A solid oak bench suitable for both indoor or outdoor use. It is a combination of fine details, interesting angles that give it an almost trapezoid shape, and some very clever woodworking. It has tapered legs at both the back and front. Three slats make up the seat and a cross lap joinery detail joins the arm and back together. It is a very comfortable piece, with curved edges on the arms and the front of the seat. Made in Devon, England. L140 D50 H77 cm

Chika Reiko Kaneko An elegant and refined collection of five different hand-thrown vessels in terracotta. They all vary in height, diameter, thickness and in the shape of the lip. Terracotta is an ancient natural material that derives its rich orange red colour from the high iron content of the clay. Each Chika vessel is finished with an opaque white glaze on the inside. Hand made in Suffolk, England. In order of tallest to shortest: H53 Ø14 cm H47.5 Ø24 cm H37.5 Ø14.5 cm H28 Ø19 cm H18 Ø18 cm Galvanized Peter Marigold A free standing shelving unit made from laser-cut hot dip galvanised steel. Large, at an industrial kind of scale, they are constructed with oversized nuts and bolts. Each shelf has been hand finished, utilising hydrochloric acid to strip back some of the zinc, creating a mottled finish, almost like camouflage. Despite their scale and apparent roughness, they have soft rounded edges and are reassuringly sturdy. Made in Yorkshire, England. Hand finish applied by designer. L63 D30 H150 cm Pyxis Sarah Kay A set of handmade wooden vessels in elm, natural and ebonised chestnut. The three different designs work as a group, or as individual pieces. The small size version has a neatly fitting lid, and the tall version has a hole in the bottom and an optional lining for potential use as a vase. The knots and lines are particularly noticeable on the surface. They are beautifully crafted by the hand of the designer, in her workshop in the Pyrenees, France. Elm box: L16 D16 H16 cm Chestnut bowl: L38 D38 H9 cm Ebonised chestnut vase: L18 D18 H27 cm Kvara Oscar Coakley New SCP designer Oscar Coakley has created Kvara, a heavy-duty side table made from mild steel. The table is in the form of a letter-z, and is raw, heavy and unyielding. Heat treated to create the form, the design has a natural finish with noticeable temper marks. The underside has plastic feet to protect floors. Hand made in London by the designer. W45 D30 H50 cm Bird & Bear Donna Wilson Two different shapes of earthenware figurines, the Bird and the Bear. The Bird comes in three different colours and the Bear in two. The designs are based on Donna Wilson illustrations, which have an odd otherness all their own. They are hand-painted and glazed in Stoke on Trent, England. Bird: W19 H12.5 cm Bear: W14 H36 cm

This season sees the introduction of three new products to SCP, the Piechart upholstered bench, the Crosscut shelving system and the Nami pendant light. All of them, to varying degrees, see the designers developing ideas they have already begun with SCP. Donna Wilson revisits the upholstered bench, in echoes of her breakthrough SCP design, the Motley ottoman. Design duo Faudet-Harrison expand their popular Crosscut range, with a beautifully simple shelving system, while Reiko Kaneko brings some more of her mastery of form and finish to the pendant light typology. A/W Collection 2015 Piechart Donna Wilson Literal, tactile and awash with complimentary colour, Piechart is a slim low upholstered bench. Round in shape, it has a plywood frame, turned oak legs and is covered with segments of different knitted wools. It is hand-stitched and curves down softly at the edges. It is that kind of occasional piece of furniture which is ideal for sitting, leaning, propping and sprawling, anywhere at home. Made in Norfolk, England. Ø110 H 37cm SCP Classics We launched the first collection of SCP Classics at the 2015 Milan Salone del Mobile earlier this year. Here is an introduction to the collection. There is a little poetry in how an object becomes a design classic. It comes into existence through an organic and almost democratic process. There is no judging panel, no vested interest and no elitism, just the success of a design over time. The fact that certain objects naturally rise to the top makes the discipline of industrial design a joyous, unexpected, inspirational and human thing. We have long lived in a world where politics, culture, economics and communications all have an influence on the creation of objects. What is delightful is that, within this, or perhaps in spite of this, good design has the power to transcend all. We have taken an interest in design classics since our inception. In 1985, when Sheridan Coakley established SCP, he had already been re-making classic tubular steel designs under license for a number of years. With a growing understanding of the British manufacturing landscape, he decided that, rather than re-issue old designs, he would begin to create new ones. At the time there was a vibrancy in British design education, and Coakley chose to work with some of the characters who were emerging from this scene. Together they created the designs that were the very beginnings of SCP as a manufacturer. Now, 30 years on, we have marked our anniversary with the launch of SCP Classics, a celebratory collection of designs from the SCP archive that includes an armchair, a stool, a sofa, a desk, a number of tables, two daybeds, two storage systems and range of tableware. Genuine design classics are defined in the Phaidon Design Classics book as industrially manufactured objects of aesthetic value and timeless quality. We have chosen these objects with that idea in mind, but naturally we have also chosen for emotional and sometimes playful reasons. These are very much our classics, with an idiosyncratic SCP character all their own. The first SCP Classics collection features designs from Jasper Morrison, Konstantin Grcic, Matthew Hilton, Terence Woodgate, James Irvine, Rachel Whiteread and Michael Marriott. Each product was re-visited by the designer. Some remain unchanged from the original and some have been updated with new materials, finishes or dimensions. To view the whole collection, please visit: www.scp.co.uk/collections/scp-classics Crosscut Faudet-Harrison Nami Reiko Kaneko The Crosscut shelving system is an ingeniously minimal design, constructed from laser-cut rectangular steel uprights and solid oak shelves. The uprights and shelves come in two heights and widths respectively. The wooden shelves sit neatly into the cross cuts in the steel, creating a design that sits flush on the wall. It is assembled with bolts and attaches to the wall with screws. A refined and cleverly conceived design, this is an unobtrusive piece for domestic and commercial settings. Available in a white or dark grey fine textured finish. Made in the UK and EU. A fine bone china pendant light, available in one size, designed and made in Stoke-on-Trent. The form of the pendant is reminiscent of a bell, but with less of a flare at the bottom. It has a real softness of look and feel and shines translucent white when the bulb is on, while the fine bone china looks equally as beautiful when the light is off. It has a simple orange braided textile cable and uses the latest E27 7W or 14W low energy bulbs. Hand made in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Ø15 H14 cm Size of unit as shown: L157 D29 H206 cm
