ROSNY The historic steamships of Williamstown played a vital economic and social role in the early establishment of Melbourne. With cargo and passenger ships seeking anchorage in the safe harbour of Williamstown, ferry services were indispensible in shuttling goods and services between the thriving port of Williamstown and Melbourne City. Rosny (1913), a wooden steamship of 182 tonnes, is a Williamstown ferry of historic interest. Purchased in 1920 by the Williamstown City Council from the Derwent River Ferry Service (Hobart), Rosny spent 12 event-filled years as the last of the Williamstown to Melbourne ferries. The Rosny had a unique character all of her own, and was always having arguments with other boats, including an infamous run-in with an English battleship. The Captain must have lived a charmed life, for whenever incidents are spoken of; it was always the Rosny at fault and never the hand on the wheel! Rosny served out her days as a luxury pleasure cruiser and houseboat but not before one final triumph when she was spruced up to her finest for one last official use as a ferry during the royal visit of 1963.
