Your Guide to Saving Energy and Money ENERGY STAR certified means energy savings for you and reduced emissions for Wisconsin. The average household spends about $2,000 a year on energy costs. Appliances and electronics account for about 30 percent of that amount. To choose products that offer energy efficiency without sacrificing features, performance or comfort, just look for the ENERGY STAR label. The trusted ENERGY STAR mark indicates products that have been third-party tested to meet strict energy efficiency requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Save when you purchase, keep saving day after day. Focus on Energy has partnered with ENERGY STAR and participating retailers to make these high-performing, high-quality products more affordable. That means you ll save on your purchase, you ll save year after year and you ll help save the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Compare product benefits, features and pricing at participating retailers at focusonenergy.com/appliancemarketplace.

Clothes Dryers certified clothes dryers: Use an average of 20 percent less energy without sacrificing features or performance. Use innovative energy-saving technologies, such as advanced moisture sensors that detect when clothes are dry and automatically shut off. Reduce the wear and tear caused by over-heating and over-drying clothes. Prevent wrinkles if they also have convenient features like steam cycles. Look for the highest Combined Energy Factor (CEF), which is the model's energy efficiency rating. The higher the CEF, the more efficient the model is. Gas: Greater than or equal to 3.48 CEF Electric: Greater than or equal to 3.93 CEF Consider an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump dryer for even greater energy savings up to 60 percent more than conventional clothes dryers. energystar.gov/products/appliances/clothes_dryers.

Freezers certified freezers: Use at least 10 percent less energy than the minimum federal standard. Consume much less energy than older models a 1980s model can cost $157 in annual energy costs versus $35 for a new ENERGY STAR certified model. Select a chest freezer if space allows. The door opens from the top and less cold air will escape, so it s usually more energy efficient than an upright. Consider a manual defrost freezer, which uses half the energy of an automatic defrost model, but must be defrosted periodically to achieve the energy savings. Leave a few inches between the wall and the freezer to allow for air circulation. Place the freezer indoors, where extreme temperatures won t affect its performance, and set the temperature at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. energystar.gov/products/appliances/freezers.

Room Air Conditioners (ACs) certified room air conditioners: Use about 10 percent less energy on average. Cost, on average, less than $70 per year to run. Often include timers, allowing for better temperature control and the minimum energy use needed to cool a room. Have advanced technical features that increase energy savings, such as high-efficiency compressors, fan motors, heat transfer surfaces and insulation. Provide a visual reminder when the air filter needs to be checked, cleaned or replaced to help keep the unit operating at peak efficiency. Run more quietly to make the room more peaceful. Make sure your unit is properly sized. Room ACs remove both heat and humidity from the air. If the unit is too large, it will cool the room quickly but only remove some of the humidity. This creates a damp, clammy environment and wastes energy. A properly sized unit will effectively remove humidity as it cools the room. energystar.gov/products/heating_cooling/ air_conditioning_room.

Room Air Purifiers Portable room air purifiers reduce indoor air pollutants, such as fine particles, pollen and other allergens. Seventy-five percent of allergists recommend air purifiers to their patients as part of an overall allergy/asthma treatment program. certified room air purifiers: Use 40 percent less energy than standard models. Save about $200 in energy costs over their lifetime. Reduce airborne pollutants like fine particles and allergens. Choose a model sized appropriately for the square footage of your room. Look for: Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 50 or higher CADR-to-watts ratio of 2.0 and a standby power requirement of 2.0 watts Model that produces 50 parts/billion or less of ozone. energystar.gov/products/appliances/air_purifiers.

Sound Bars A sound bar is a special speaker enclosure that simulates a surround sound environment. The single cabinet is relatively easy to set up and is usually less expensive than five-channel systems. certified sound bars: Can use up to 60 percent less energy. Don t sacrifice sound, quality, harmonics or performance. May include wireless access to subwoofers for easy surround sound system setup. Be sure to compare specifications on a variety of factors, including auto power-down requirements of less than two hours, sleep-mode power consumption limits, on-mode power allowances, idle-state power allowances and minimum amplifier efficiency. energystar.gov/products/electronics/audiovideo/ key_product_criteria.
