A - FATO Perimeter Lights Final Approach & Takeoff Area (FATO). A defined area over which the final phase of the approach to a hover, or a landing is completed and from which the takeoff is initiated. FAA recommends a minimum of sixteen (16) green perimeter lights with spacing not to exceed 25- ft. ICAO recommends white lights spaced not to exceed 5-meters. In practice, many smaller helipads use eight (8) lights. These lights may be semi-flush inset, low surface mounted at less than 6-inch height or elevated on FAA frangible couplings. The light source may be LED or incandescent. LED lights are available with optional NVG compatibility as described in the catalog. PEL-57004 PEL-97004 LP34 PEL-97004 JBS 3 PEL-97004 LSM MT PRL-97704 PRL-90000 PRL-97004 EX LSM PRL-97004 PLS B - TLOF Touchdown Lights Touchdown and Lift-off Area (TLOF). A load bearing, generally paved area, normally centered in the FATO, on which the helicopter lands or takes off. The TLOF lights, when not doubling as the FATO, are semi-flush and vary in number and pattern. They are generally symmetrical with the FATO lights and thus closer spaced. The light source may be green LED or incandescent. LED lights are available with optional NVG compatibility as described in the catalog. PRL-97704 MT PRL-97004 EX PRL-97004 PLS PRL-97704 EX C - Landing Direction Lights FAA recommends a five (5) yellow landing direction lights for each preferred direction of approach extending in a line with 15-ft spacing. These lights may be semi-flush inset or elevated on FAA frangible couplings. The light source may be LED or incandescent. LED lights are available with optional NVG compatability as described in the catalog. PRL-97004 PLS PEL-57004 PRL-97004 LP34
D - Floodlighting Floodlighting must not present glare to the pilot or be so bright as to interfere with aircraft operations. It is not necessary to provide an even footcandle level across the pad. The floodlights will generate cones of light across the landing surface that will provide depth perception to the pilot by eliminating the "black hole" effect. PSF-53025 (LED) PHF-53004 PHF-53002 PHL-57004 PSF-57224 PSF-53005 (Halogen) E - Lighted Wind Cones A PWC wind cone may be FAA L-807 style with a rigid hinged base pole and overall height of about 22-ft. This type is normally for ground mounting. Or it may be FAA L-806 type lightweight and about 10-ft tall. The 806 is usually installed on a roof with Point Lighting safety options including a stainless steel tether. Both styles use the same 8-ft long tapered windsock and the same internal or external lighting. The light source may be LED or incandescent. The wind cone should be sited away from obstructions that may interfere with the actual prevailing wind pattern. It should be clear of the landing surface and at right angles to the preferred direction of approach if possible. PWC-8061L PWC-8071L
F - Heliport Beacons The PHB Point Heliport Beacon is a medium intensity flashing signal for the pilot to locate the site. It should be mounted at the highest point anywhere on the site visible in 360-degrees. 7 Offshore Helideck Lighting Marine Vessels Point Lighting Corporation is an FAA certified airfield lighting manufacturer that seeks to attain all relevant product certifications to international standards for heliport and helideck lighting systems. We use third party certification bodies such as INTERTEK and SIRA where defined test standards exist such as FAA, UL Standards, CSA and ATEX. We strive to demonstrate compliance where standards are published without a test regime such as ICAO Annex 14 and CAP 437. Lighting for aviation operations on offshore marine vessels certified to UL1598A per US Coast Guard requirements. Where applicable, CAP 437 compliance and ATEX Zone 1 or Class I, Division 2 listing. Surface mounted or semi-flush mounting and all lights have a special marine treatment for corrosion resistance certified to the highest grade military salt spray test. Point Lighting recognizes the extreme conditions endured in the offshore industry. Our products do not use external plastic components; everything is treated metal and glass in forms that draw upon our long experience with methods for resistance to corrosion and water ingress as required by US Military and FAA test programs. All cast metal parts are treated for marine conditions by cleaning per US MIL method III of TT-C-490, chromate priming per US MIL-C-5541, epoxy powder base coat and glossy polyester powder coat finish coat in color RAL 6003 (FED-STD-595 color #14097) green and oven cured per US MIL-PRF-24712A. This has passed the highest level of salt fog tests. POINTUSA HELIDECK TOUCHDOWN & PERIMETER LIGHTS The PRL-LSM is the perimeter light most often selected for our offshore LED lighting systems. The construction is robust with no plastics. If a semi-flush light is required, the PRL-97704 can be dropped into a cutout in the deck's metal surface. PRL's are in use all over the world. It should be mounted at the highest point anywhere on the site visible in 360-degrees. The PSL Status Light System complies with CAP 437 for warning of a hazardous condition onboard. PHB-37001-MT PSL-35001 PSL-35002 LIGHTED WIND CONES For offshore sites, the PWC-8061L wind cone is commonly used because it is lightweight and about 10-ft tall. It is available with Point Lighting safety options including a stainless steel tether. The light source may be LED or incandescent. The wind cone should be sited away from obstructions that may interfere with the actual prevailing wind pattern. PWC-8061L

NVG Compatible Lighting Infrared Lighting System Point Lighting Corporation has developed heliport lighting products and systems that are compatible with Night Vision Goggles (NVG) for civilian and military use. Incandescent lighting can be seen by NVG due to the heat signature and the full spectrum emissions of incandescent light. LED lights do not produce significant heat and emit colored light at a single wavelength typically outside the range of NVG reception. Typical Aviator Night Vision Imaging Systems (ANVIS) use so-called "Generation 3" technology which is the current military standard sensing infrared (IR) light in the 600 to 900 nanometer (nm) wavelength range. It is used by military and commercial pilots. Point Lighting IR LEDs emit at 850 nm which is outside the unaided human visual range. Therefore, we have developed certain products intended for use under unaided VFR with NVG compatibility and others are for tactical use with NVG only. The latter will not be visible to unaided eyes. The background information at the link below is partially adapted from the Aviation Research Report B2004/0152 Night Vision Goggles in Civil Helicopter Operations by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. POINTUSA LED HELIPORT LIGHTS WITH OPTIONAL NVG COMPATIBILITY The LED lights shown at our HELIPORT LIGHTING link are visible under normal VFR operations. With the addition of option -NC NVG Compatibility, infrared (IR) LED's are incorporated in the array to allow the lights to be also seen using NVG. Both types of LED's operate at the same time and no special switching is required POINTUSA LED OBSTRUCTION LIGHTS WITH NVG COMPATIBILITY The POL-21004 is available in a double head version where one head is visible red and the other head is infrared (IR). Both heads may be operated together making the obstruction marking visible both with and without NVG. Or the heads may be switched separately for military applications. Only the IR head is switched to operate under tactical "lights out" conditions and the visible red LED head can be switched ON for normal VFR conditions POL-21004-S-NC POL-21004-S2-NC POL-21004-D2-NC
POINTUSA LED HELIPORT LIGHTS FOR MILITARY USE Point Lighting Corporation has various solutions for dual use heliports that must operate some of the time for "lights out" NVG-only night flying. These may be custom LED lights where the IR and visible LED's reside in the same light, but may be remotely switched between the two modes. Contact Point Lighting for this solution. Dual use lights may also be incandescent light source with special lenses and switchable between IR and visible light. IR only lights are also available in either LED or incandescent.
