The demands of modern living have seen water usage increase by 55% over the last 25 years, with 63% of all water used originating from bathrooms. As we use more and more water, our planet s natural resources are threatened, putting future supplies under greater pressure. Think Leaders in changing attitudes and behaviours We are changing people s attitudes and behaviours towards water conservation through our educational activity. A number of small but significant changes in bathroom habits can result in saving large volumes of water. At Ideal Standard we monitor the UK s bathroom habits with independent research and publish the results to stimulate attention of water saving. In addition we produce factsheets and tips on how to save water. We further demonstrate our commitment to environmental awareness through educational programmes in schools, working closely with organisations such as Waterwise, Bathroom Manufacturers Association and the National Home Improvement Council. We work in partnership with such bodies to champion the progress of new schemes and initiatives to encourage legislative change and water conservation.

Change Leaders in understanding legislation & environmental schemes Recent years have seen much change with several schemes and initiatives developed to promote the specification of water efficient products in bathrooms and washrooms. Our knowledge and understanding of legislation means we are trusted advisors to our customers. Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) (www.breeam.org) The Building Research Establishment set up BREEAM as a way to determine the environmental performance of buildings. As the world s most widely used assessment scheme credits are awarded based on the efficiency level of a building. The Water Technology List (WTL) The WTL is a single source of approved water efficient products, and according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) specifying products on the list can reduce the annual consumption of bathrooms and washrooms by up to 50%. The Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme (WEPLS) (www.water-efficiencylabel.org.uk) WEPLS is an independently run programme endorsed by DEFRA, which recognises products for their water efficiency. Ideal Standard has over 450 products approved by WEPLS. Part G: New dwellings and those created by a change of use must comply with Part G of the new buildings regulations. These buildings must not exceed a water efficiency standard of 125 litres of water per person per day, using the Water Efficiency Calculator. The Water Efficiency Calculator is also used as the basis for assessment in the Code for Sustainable Homes, which is an environmental impact rating system for housing. Our innovative solutions for bathrooms and washrooms offer dramatic reduction in water usage, benefiting the environmental needs of today and tomorrow. Our latest WCs feature a low dual flush cistern (see pages 35-49), which uses just 2.6 litres of water per short flush. Armitage Shank s Contour 21 range incorporates WCs with rimless technology and reduced flush volumes. While just one Aridian urinal, featuring our innovative waterless technology, can save up to 87,000 litres of water per year versus a conventional urinal. Showering and bathing accounts for around 20% of all the water we use and by installing a low capacity bath it will help conserve water. We have a range of low capacity baths (see pages 53-58) that typically use 15-28% less water while still providing a comfortable deep soak. And a typical seven minute shower, with an Ideal Standard flow regulator, can save between 40 and 80 litres of water compared with having a bath. Ideal Standard s CLICK Cartridge technology is a smart solution, and in an average bathroom it can save over 5,000 litres of water per year. It works through a resistance in the tap lever that indicates a flow rate of 50%, this can save up to 14.4 litres of water in just two short minutes (at 0.5 bar pressure). A dripping tap can waste a staggering 8,760 litres a year, but with Ideal Standard s pioneering Ceramic Disc Cartridge, dripping taps are a thing of the past. One of our best selling taps is Sensorflow, which is now used in many washrooms. Sensorflow s visionary technology detects hands within a specific range and opens the valve for water flow, which ceases three seconds after hands are removed. And our latest innovation, Ceramix Blue mixers and taps feature revolutionary new technology, saving water and energy costs as well as being environmentally friendly. The bath filler and bath shower mixers are safe for all the family with their thermostatic control and cool body features as well as being designed to give excellent flow rates at low pressure. In addition, the IdealPure technology in the Ceramix Blue basin mixers provides safe drinking water.
