Tabletop props will be utilized to give the student access to actual valves they will use to control LP Gas emergencies. The instructors will use documented analysis of actual incidents to help students understand resource needs and approach considerations for LP Gas leaks as well as leaks involving fire. Students will learn the principles and methodology of GO or NO GO when presented with LP Gas emergency. Students will participate in hands-on live fire training with actual LP Gas props designed to teach firefighters how to control the leak or fire safely. This is a physically demanding course. Students should be prepared to spend 8-12 hours in full PPE. Full NFPA compliant PPE is required including SCBA and spare bottle. Instructor: Michael S. 2 Engine Company Fire Fighting Operations 20 Hours This program is designed for firefighters who are primarily assigned to, or respond as members of an Engine Company. The program offers firefighters an opportunity to either sharpen their current skills, or learn new and efficient skills for the all-important task of getting water on the fire. This program is an intensive hands-on program, and includes opportunities to select and evaluate a variety of differing hose line advancements and nozzle selection. Participants will be involved in an offsite Live Structure Burn on Sunday. Prerequisite: Note: Requires Chief signature on Chief s Affirmation Form. NFPA 1403 guidelines will be followed, including facial hair guidelines. Instructor: Shannon Buchanan Shannon is a Battalion Chief with Enka Candler Fire Rescue. Chief Buchanan is an adjunct instructor for AB-Tech Community College current Qualified Live Burn instructor with the NC Fire Commission. 3 Get Evolved Emergency Vehicle Operations in Live Virtual Evolution Driving 20 Hours GET EVOLVED is a dynamic training course which provides classroom and hands on training in conjunction with case studies. Topic covered will be intersection safety, rollover prevention and hazards of responding emergency vehicles. The hands on portion provides the student with an opportunity to drive a fire apparatus in a virtual simulator testing their driving skills and allowing them to encounter hazardous driving situations. The case studies presented in this program will provide the student with actual fire apparatus crashes which have occurred and allow the student to identify areas of improvement from the lessons learned. 4 - EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVER Driver/Operator Certification FIP 3601 20 Hours This course deals with the safe operation of emergency vehicles, driving skills, legal implications of emergency driving and departmental standard operating procedures. This course is a standalone certification and is also a prerequisite to Driver Operator certification by the North Carolina Fire Rescue Commission. Students must meet minimum age requirements (18 years of age or older). Instructor: Houston Alexander Houston has been a volunteer firefighter since 1996 and a career Engineer/Driver Operator for Skyland Fire Department since 2007. NCDOI Certified Instructor. 5 Ladder Company Operations 20 Hours This class will cover the many functions of a ladder company. A brief classroom session will cover task level goals of a truck company and how you can make them work for your departmentlarge or small. The bulk of the program will be conducted using hands on training. Topics that will be covered include forcible entry, vent enter search, search, peak and flat roof ventilation, horizontal ventilation, and company officer tactics. Instructors: Wes Rogers & Jeremy Knighton Wes Rogers has 20 years of fire service experience and proudly serves the Asheville Fire Department as the Division Chief of Training. Wes is an adjunct instructor for AB-Tech Community College and Blue Ridge Community College. NCDOI Certified Instructor. Jeremy Knighton has 18 years of fire service experience and proudly serves the Asheville Fire Department as a Battalion Chief-Battalion 1-A. 6 Rapid Intervention Crew 20 Hours The Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) course will focus on the development of risk assessment and risk management, communication procedures, personal accountability and resource management, RIC deployment criteria, activation and management of rapid intervention operations, and the clear distinction between rescue and recovery operations. The main focus of the course is to reduce the risk to RIC members and maximize the potential of rescuing a downed firefighter. Students will have a more thorough understanding of search techniques, victim access and extrication, air supply/management techniques, methods for protecting firefighters in place, methods for moving downed firefighters, and firefighter self-rescue techniques. This program is based off of NFPA 1407 Standard for Training Fire Service Rapid Intervention Crews. This class is designed to improve the knowledge, skills, and abilities of firefighters to function on the fire ground as a member of a Rapid Intervention Team. Classroom theory will be combined with practical applications and scenario based training. Topics in the class include; Leadership, RIT Company Operations (Teamwork), Packaging and Extrication. Students will be broken into companies (teams) and all evolutions will be completed as a team. This class is physically demanding and will teach the students the limitations of their equipment... Equipment: Full turnout gear required, SCBA and extra bottle. SCBA bottles must have current hydro-test date. Note: Requires Chief signature on Chief s Affirmation Form. NFPA 1403 guidelines will be followed, including facial hair guidelines. Instructor: Trey Young Asheville Fire Department, NCDOI Certified Instructor 7 Advanced Extrication 20 This class is designed to improve the knowledge, skills, and abilities of firefighters to function on the emergency scene of accidents involving trapped or incapacitated victims. This is a class for responders that have experience in basic extrication techniques and are looking to advance their skills and grow their toolboxes. 8 Legal Practices for Fire Departments 8 Hours Saturday 8 AM 5 PM North Carolina as a contributory negligence state and what contributory negligence means in the context of civil litigation, government and personal immunity and their application in lawsuits, fire driver safety as its relates to various tort law concepts, continuous fire service improvement; racial, gender and equal opportunity in civil rights litigation, testifying in court - some do s and don ts, fire departmental record-keeping, fire departmental subpoena obligations, etc. Instructor: Alan Coxie, P. A. Attorney at Law Instructor Alan Coxie worked for the Asheville Fire Department for almost 15 years serving in several capacities from Firefighter to Fire Captain. Afterwards, Alan attended the Wake Forest University School of Law graduating and admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 2000. Alan has practiced in several areas including insurance defense, worker compensation, employment, corporate, personal injury, civil, criminal, as a local counsel for North Carolina League of Municipalities and he consults in the fire service. Alan is completing a Master Degree in Public Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. NATIONAL FIRE ACADEMY CLASSES Information for students taking NFA classes To apply for a course you will need a FEMA Student Identification Number (SID). This number will be used in place of a Social Security Number on General Application forms. Applications received with a Social Security Number instead of the required Student Identification Number will not be processed. Below is the link and information on how to obtain your SID. Note: Do not use the Student Identification Number (SID) for the McDowell Fire, Rescue & EMS College registration. The SID number is only used for NFA applications. To obtain a SID 1. Register at https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid 2. Select "Need a FEMA SID?" on the right side of the screen. 3. Follow the instructions to create your account. 4. You will receive an email with your SID. Save this number in a secure location. Use the SID in place of the SSN on the General Admissions Application Form (FEMA Form 119-25-1) and General Admissions Application Short Form (FEMA Form 119-25-2).
9 - Preparation for Initial Company Operations (NFA) (See NFA Class Info on preceding page) 20 Hours This two-day course is designed to develop a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Company Officers (COs) in preparing their company for incident operations. In addition, this course is designed to clarify the transition from firefighter to CO and the new roles relating to leadership and safety. This course is designed for CO s, acting CO s, or senior firefighters responsible for the management of a single fire company at an emergency incident. This includes those officers who are responsible for company readiness, personnel safety, and leadership as it relates to company operation. Instructor: Dennis Fagnant Jr. Dennis Fagnant, Jr., has been in the fire service for 25 years and is currently the Training and Safety Division Chief for the West Buncombe Fire Department. Prior to West Buncombe, he was a Battalion Chief with the Weaverville Fire Department and is a veteran of the USAF, Fire Protection. Chief Fagnant holds a Masters degree in Public Administration, Bachelors in Fire Science and has twice received the Chief Fire Officer Designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. 10 - ARSON DETECTION FOR THE FIRST RESPONDER (NFA) (See NFA Class Info on preceding page) 12 Hours Saturday 9AM 5 PM, Sunday 8 AM 2 PM The first responder is often in the best position to make critical observations regarding a fire. Observations of the first responder during the various stages of an incident are extremely critical. This course will cover fire behavior, first responder observations, fire causes, scene security, and preservation of evidence, legal considerations, and reporting of findings. 11 - UNDERSTANDING THE NORTH CAROLINA RESPONSE RATING PLAN 20 Hours This class will review the latest information and factors which go into the make-up of the public protection rating of cities and fire districts. The system continues to evaluate three major categories of fire suppression; Fire Department, Emergency Communications, and Water Supply. The course also includes the Community Risk Section that recognizes community efforts to reduce losses through fire prevention, public fire safety, and fire investigation. A water haul exercise is planned on the last day of the class. Equipment needed: Full turnout gear for exercise and a thumb/flash drive data storage device for latest information. Instructors: Davie Summey & Terry Young Davie Summey, Fire Ratings Supervisor, NCDOI Chief, Cedar Mountain Fire/Rescue Terry Young, Fire Ratings Inspector, NCDOI 12 - Wildland Fire Suppression for Fire Departments 15 hours Saturday 8 AM 5 PM, Sunday 8 AM 4 PM This course was developed by the N.C. Forest Service to teach fire personnel the basic knowledge needed to safely suppress wildland fires. The course covers Organization, Fire Behavior, Locating the fire, Fire size-up, Tactics for hand crews, engines, and tractor- plow units. Mop-up, Fire Prevention, and Firefighter Safety are also covered, as well as the different terrain and fire environments forces may encounter in NC. This class will cover basic knowledge for personnel to safely and efficiently suppress wildland fire while working with a fire department. 13 New Firefighter Orientation (What does it mean to be a Junior FF ) Saturday 8 AM 5 PM, Sunday 8 AM 4 PM 15 Hours For the new or junior firefighter, this course will introduce beginning firefighters to dangers, equipment, and procedures used in the fire service. Prerequisite: Minimum age 16. Equipment: Full turnout gear and SCBA. SCBA bottles must have current hydro-test date Instructor: Roy Brian, Retired Captain, Hendersonville FD NCDOI Qualified Instructor 14 - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) 15 hours Saturday 8 AM 5 PM, Sunday 8 AM 4 PM Initial is a two day classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that uses a series of simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation and team dynamics. The goal of the PALS course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. Instructor: TBD
15 - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) 15 Hours Saturday 8 AM 5 PM, Sunday 8 AM 4 PM Initial is a two day classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. Through didactic instruction and active participation in simulated cases, students will enhance their skills in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest, acute arrhythmia, stroke and acute coronary syndromes. Some classes require additional fees which must be included with Registration Form. Additional fees may be found in course description. Students may enroll for multiple classes as long as the class schedules do not conflict or overlap. All classes must be listed on the registration form (located in the back of the brochure). Only one $30.00 per person Fire & Rescue College fee for the weekend. Course locations and times are subject to change. Courses with low enrollment are subject to cancellation. Certification Information Participants (except students attending certification classes) attending 80% of class hours will be awarded a certificate. Attendance will be taken twice each day of class. In order to be eligible to receive a certificate of completion, students must be present each day of the class. Certificates for classes will be mailed to students.
