GENERAL INFORMATION AND RULES FOR ALL DIVISIONS 1. This is a Standard Flower Show according to the requirements of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC). All classes are open to any member of a garden club affiliated with Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. All entries must be placed on Wednesday, May 13 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Exhibitors may check and/or refresh their exhibits, if needed, from 8:00 to 9:00 AM on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Judging will begin promptly at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 14, 2015. The show will be open to the public from 1:00 until 4:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 2015. All entries must be removed between 4:00 and 5:00 PM. 2. Entries will be received and checked for conformity to the schedule by the Design and Horticulture Classification Chairmen. Suggested changes may be made if needed to conform to NGC policies. An exhibit may be marked Not for competition if deemed necessary by appropriate chairman. 3. The Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007 edition (HB) as revised shall be used as the authority on all points not covered in the schedule. 4. In all divisions there must be an emphasis on fresh plant material, except where otherwise specified in the schedule. No artificial plant materials are allowed. 5. The NGC Standard System of Awarding will be used by the judges. Scales of points based on perfection (100 points) are used to assure fair and objective evaluation of all exhibits. Awards will be given at the discretion of the judges. Judges decisions are final and the award will be withheld if not merited. The Standard System of Awarding allows one ribbon of each color per class except for white ribbon, i.e., only one first place, blue ribbon; must score 90 or more; only one second place, red ribbon; must score 85 or more; only one third-place yellow ribbon; must score 80 or more; one or more honorable mention awards, white ribbons; must score 75 or more. Accredited judges will sign and date all design entry cards. In addition, judges will give comments on design exhibits for educational purposes, and comments on horticulture entry cards as appropriate. 6. Only authorized personnel may be present during judging. The required personnel include the Flower Show Chairmen, the judges, Judges' Chairman, the clerks, Clerks' Chairman, and the Horticulture Classification Chairman. 7. All entries are to be the work of one exhibitor and that exhibitor s name must appear on the entry card. 8. The use of Virginia Native Plants listed on Virginia s Conservation List is prohibited unless grown by the exhibitor. If used, these must be labeled and must be obtained in a legal manner (VFGC Yearbook 2013-2015, p. 64). 10. Exhibitors will not be able to use open flame or electricity. Battery operated mechanics are allowed and are to be supplied by the exhibitor. 11. The Flower Show Committee will exercise care in protecting exhibits, but will not assume responsibility for loss or damage or personal injury. 2
STATEMENT OF NATIONAL GARDEN CLUB TOP AWARDS AND CHESAPEAKE BAY GARDEN CLUB AWARDS The following ribbons will be awarded, if merited. DIVISION I DESIGN One Designer s Choice Award may be awarded to the highest blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 or above in Section A (Classes 1,2,3, with at least 4 exhibits in each class). Rosette of purple ribbons. One Table Artistry Award may be awarded to the highest blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 or above in Section B (Classes 4,5,6, with at least 4 exhibits in each class). Rosette of burgundy ribbons. One Award of Design Excellence may be awarded to a blue ribbon exhibit scoring the highest number of points in the entire Design Division. Only top exhibitor award winners are eligible for this award. Award decided by all judges of Design Division. Rosette of gold ribbons. DIVISION II HORTICULTURE One Award of Merit may be awarded to a named blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 or above in Sections B, C, D, E, and J. Rosette of orange ribbons. One Arboreal Award may be awarded to a named blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 or above in Sections H and I. Rosette of two values of green ribbons. One Grower s Choice Award may be awarded to a named blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 or above in Section K. Rosette of dark green ribbons. One Chesapeake Bay Garden Club Award may be awarded to a named blue ribbon exhibit scoring 95 or above as follows: President s Award in Section A, Frances Biddlecomb Award in Section F, Addie Roberts Award in Section G, and Northern Neck Grower s Award in Section L. Rosette of white and yellow ribbons. The Award of Horticultural Excellence may be awarded to the finest named (genus and species) exhibit of fresh plant material in the entire Horticulture Division. Winners of Section Awards are eligible for the Award of Horticultural Excellence. Award decided by all judges of Horticulture Division. Rosette of green, orange, and blue ribbons. 3
DESIGN RULES DIVISION I DESIGN Spring Putting on a Show: Broadway at Festival Halle 1. There will be four exhibits per class. Advanced registration is required in all design classes. Reservations may be made between February 1 and April 24, 2015 by telephoning or e-mailing Kathie Truxall (804-453-5700) cwtrux@earthlink.net. If necessary to cancel after registering, the exhibitor must find a substitute and inform Kathie Truxall of the change. 2. Entries will be accepted from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 13, and removed between 4:00 to 5:00 PM on Thursday, May 14. A printed list of plant materials MUST accompany the exhibit. Botanical names are not required, but are encouraged. Both botanical and common name may be used if available. Exhibitors may print a comment and/or interpretation on a 3 x 5 card. 3. Some plant material must be used in every design exhibit. It does not have to be grown by the exhibitor. The use of artificial plant material, flowers, fruit, and foliage is not permitted. Fresh plant material may never be treated, but may be abstracted. Dried plant material may be treated. 4. All entries must be the work of a single exhibitor. An exhibitor may enter all classes, but may have only one exhibit per class. 5. Landscapes and scenes are not permitted in Design Division. 6. Fruits and vegetables and non-perishable food products are allowed but must be sealed, if the possibility exists for attracting insects or producing undesirable odors. 7. No mammals, fish, birds, insects, reptiles alive or preserved are permitted. 8. The American Flag or any other National flag may not be used in any design. 9. Contrived flowers and/or plant forms constructed out of recognizable plant materials are permitted. 10. A list of items permitted in a design exhibit is published on pp. 189-190 of the Handbook for Flower Shows. 11. Containers and all properties may be marked inconspicuously with the owner s name and are entered at the owner s risk. 4
DIVISION I - DESIGN Designs to be staged on 8' long tables with white covering draped to the floor, except for Class 6. Space allowed for each design is 24" wide, 30" deep, no height restriction. Background panel and underlay required for Classes 1,2, and 3 only. HORTICULTURE RULES DIVISION II HORTICULTURE Spring Putting on a Show: Stage Etiquette 1. All horticulture specimens must be fresh plant materials and grown by the exhibitor. All specimens must be labeled with the correct botanical name (genus and species), variety or cultivar, when available, common name, if known. 2. All entries should be well groomed. Diseased or infected plant material will not be accepted. All entries must be checked by the Classification Committee and each entry card must include the exhibitor s name, club name, and entry information as listed in No. 1 above. Horticulture entries will be placed by the Entries Committee. 3. All entry cards are to be filled out in advance (if possible) in pencil, waterproof ink, or labels. Entry cards may be obtained by contacting Carol Medlin or Helen Bell, Horticulture Co- Chairman, and will be available at the March and April General Meetings. 4. Exhibitors may make more than one entry per class or sub-class, provided each is of a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, type, size, or color. All Horticulture exhibits shall contain one stem of plant material, EXCEPT Class 28-Viola, which will be exhibited three (3) stems per bottle. 5. Container-grown plants must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for 90 days except for multiple plantings (6 weeks). Clean neutral colored pots, with saucers are preferred for container grown plants. Double potting allowed. 6. Containers for cut specimens shall be see-thru glass without lettering or decoration and are furnished by the exhibitor. Cut specimens should not have any foliage below the water line. 7. Wedging material of clear, plastic or bubble wrap, wood, twig, celery, cork, cotton, styrofoam, or sprig of plant material may be used. They are provided by the exhibitor. 8. A plant grown for its bloom should be shown in bloom. 9. The Classification Committee has the authority to subdivide classes as necessary (i.e. genus, species, cultivar, type, size, or color). 10. Maximum length of arboreal specimens is 30" with several nodes. Length of specimen is measured from tip to cut end and does not include container. 11.
