What is Permaculture? Permaculture is a movement that started in Australia in the 1970ʼs, that is gaining importance and popularity as peopleʼs concern grows over the health of our planet. Permaculture takes root with the following core values: Earthcare recognizing that Earth is the source of all life, that Earth is our valuable home, and that we are a part of it, not apart from it. Peoplecare supporting and helping each other to change to ways of living that do not harm ourselves or the planet, and to develop healthy societies. Fairshare (or assessing consumption) - ensuring that Earthʼs limited resources are used in ways that are equitable and wise. Do you feel small and helpless in the face of Big Business and Big Government? The intent of the permaculture movement is to enable, by rapidly training individuals in a core set of principles, to be able design their own environments and build increasingly self-sufficient human settlements ones that reduce societyʼs reliance on industrial systems of production and distribution that threaten to destroy Earthʼs ecosystems. Course Details This weeklong course is a cost- and time-efficient way to plug into the globally current and critical issues of sustainability and of ʻliving green.ʼ In addition to addressing the theories, this course carries real and practical applications that anyone can use, be they a homeowner (who wants to do more than sort the household garbage) or a career professional teacher, city councilor, town planner who needs to quickly acquire practical knowledge and applications relevant to the current issues of caring for our planet. As we learn about global issues, we spend hands-on practical time applying whatʼs learned to the actual planning, designing and creation of organic food gardens. The tools you acquire can be put to use anywhere... on your high-rise balcony, front lawn or on your back-nine acres, providing you not only with practical knowledge but the promise of the perrenial pleasure and personal satisfaction that comes from seeing a garden one you
can eat and then it grows back come to fruition. This second part of the course is designed for apartment dwellers, homeowners and landowners living in either an urban or suburban setting, who want to transform their immediate environment into something beautiful, productive, energy-lean and functional. Topics covered include: Foundations of permaculture design Harvesting the surrounding abundance Raising & preserving much of oneʼs food Gardening on concrete, on roofs & in apartments Techniques for dramatically reducing energy use Generating income from your home or lot Effective methods for harvesting rainwater Beautiful, functional and edible landscape design Garden designs that increase production while reducing labor Simple neighborhood re-works that promote community What is at the heart of creating a ʻpermanent-cultureʼ About 65% of the course time will be spent in the classroom covering the permaculture design principles and sharing example after example of how these are applied. There will be some time spent outside exploring patterns and features of the landscape as well as some actual permaculture design work. Each student will be involved in the brainstorming of several permaculture designs as well as working on a project of their own. The goal of this training is for students to come away with a new pair of permaculture eyes. A pair of eyes that can see an abundance of opportunities in any urban or suburban landscape. Permaculture Design Certification This is not a Permaculture Design Certification Course (PDC). However it does carry credit for those who might later want to acquire full permaculture design accreditation. If you are intereste in this please say so in your inquiry email. Your Instructors Lead Instructor Bill Wilson Bill holds two PDC Certifications as well as completing Advanced Permaculture Training. He is Co-Founder of Midwest Permaculture with his wife Rebecca. They have lived the last 31 years in a sustainably oriented community, being intimately involved in itʼs daily life and various transitions. Additional Trainers Joining Bill will be at least 6 other, very experienced permaculturists and teachers. Two or more of the teachers will be in the classroom in person sharing of their experience and knowledge. But with the use of the internet, several other teachers will join in live from other parts of the country. This training textbook is mailed directly to students upon registering.
