Terms and Terminology BLOCK The part of the brush into which the fill material is set. Laitner Wood Blocks Laitner wood blocks are made of natural hardwood which has been sanded and lacquered. Harper Red End Wood Blocks Harper wood blocks are made from kiln-dried hard maple, have a smooth polyurethane finish and trademarked painted ends. Structural Foam Blocks Laitner foam blocks are manufactured of virtually indestructible polypropylene. Lighter in weight, these blocks will not crack, warp, mar, or scratch, and are resistant to moisture, so as not to house contaminating bacteria, oils, and chemicals. They even float if dropped into water. FILL MATERIAL The fill material is staple set into the block and serves as the actual working part of the brush. We select only top quality materials, matching each component s characteristics to the specific jobs for which each brush is best suited. Flagged Tips Some of our synthetic filaments are mechanically split, thus forming a tapered tip, which picks up fine dust and dirt particles. When found in wash brushes, this process is what forms the softness to prevent the scratching of fragile surfaces. It also helps the brush hold more water and cleaning solutions. SYNTHETIC FIBERS The most effective material for everyday use. Can be used for wet or dry applications. Nylon Very durable. Resistant to most acids and alkalis. Can be used near high temperatures and resists abrasion. Good for food service applications. Polypropylene A synthetic material manufactured in a variety of diameters, colors and crimp frequencies. Crimping enhances the synthetic fibers water-carrying ability. Polypropylene is resistant to petroleum, solvents, acids, and detergents, and is not affected by fungus or mildews. An extremely popular man-made fiber used in floor sweeps, paste brushes, scrubs, and many other brushes. Polystyrene As with polypropylene, polystyrene is also available in a variety of diameters, colors, and crimp frequencies. Polystyrene is resistant to most household cleaning chemicals, however, it has a lower resistance to petroleum solvents and heat. Polystyrene is long wearing and has excellent flexibility, and is used in a variety of wash brushes, sweeps, utility scrubs, and many other brushes. Polyester Very durable. Resistant to most acids and alkalis. Can be used near high temperatures and resists abrasion. Unlike nylon, Polyester is extremely soft and delicate, safe to use on any surface. NATURAL FIBERS Horsehair The most effective material for scratch-free sweeping on smooth and highly polished floors. NOT FOR USE ON OILY OR WET SURFACES. Tampico Provides a medium sweeping or scrubbing action. Durable, resistant to heat, acids, and alkali. Can be used for wet or dry applications. Texture varies from soft to medium; softens when wet, and can be used alone or blended with other materials Palmyra A natural fiber obtained from the leaf stalks of the palmyra palm of India. Used in garage floor sweeps, scrub brushes, etc. African Bass A product of the leaves of palm trees grown in West Africa, also referred to as Sherbo. African Bass is a coarse, brownish-red fiber used primarily in street and barn brooms. India Fiber Made from palmyra stalks, a very coarse material. The fiber is tan in color and resembles a bamboo stalk. Laitner restricts the use of India Fiber for street brooms only. WIRE Fibers Bristles are selected for their specific application. Typically used for abrasive cleaning or scrubbing. Brass Softest of the Laitner wires, this soft crimped metal resists corrosion and is designed to clean surfaces without damaging them. Great for grilles, batteries and tire sidewalls. Tempered Steel Depending on its intended use, this material is manufactured in various degrees of thickness and hardness. Stainless Steel Corrosion resistant, non-rusting material works well with aggressive solvents and chemicals. handles Wooden Made from hardwood and come sanded or lacquered. Sizes range from 7/8 to 1-1/8 diameter with lengths 48 to 72. Tips are wood threaded, metal threaded or tapered. Flo-Thru Made from aluminum or steel and fit onto any standard garden hose. Handles range in length from 24 to 71 extendable with water control valves. Steel Made from rolled steel and powder coated. Sizes range from 22M to 15/16 diameter with lengths 48 to 60 Tips are threaded metal or plastic. Fiberglass Made commercial grade fiberglass. Handles range from 60 to extendable 144. Tips are threaded metal or plastic.
