Managing Vegetation in Salt Affected Soils Sharon A. Clay, CHERYL L. REESE, RACHEL OWEN, DAVID E. CLAY, TULSI KHAREL GIRMA BIRRU, * SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, BROOKINGS, SD BRUCE KUNZE, NRCS RETIRED JASON MILLER, NRCS SALINE AND SODIC WORKSHOP AND FIELD DAYS 8/12/2015 1
Why Salt Problems? Salts have always been deeper in soil profiles and indigenous to this area Late 1970s through 1980s, corn and soybeans introduced to this area and do not use as much water as perennial grass crops Increased rainfall, no till management and tiling have changed water use 8/12/2015 2
High Water Table and Salts Different Salts Different problems Saline = Calcium / Magnesium Salts Plants will not grow Sodic = Sodium Salts Plants will not grow and soil is dispersed. Commonality between saline and sodic problems is a high water table. 8/12/2015 3

White Lake Tall Wheatgrass Site: August 2014 No water at the bottom of the soil pit. Redox features Orange iron deposits. Appear when oxygen in soil atmosphere; no water! Tall wheat grass roots down to 4 5 feet. All these factors indicate water table is deeper in soil profile. 8/12/2015 12

Summary Perennial grasses establishment (tall wheat grass) lowed the water table at White Lake. Elemental sulfur on Pierpont soils helped establish cover crops. What would be best for your situation? 8/12/2015 21
