Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans: What is a SUMP? Definition of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP): A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is a Strategic Plan designed to satisfy the mobility needs of people and businesses in cities and their surroundings for a better quality of life. It builds on existing planning practices and takes due consideration of integration, participation, and evaluation principles.

Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans: Changing Emphasis Looking at longer-term horizon for setting the vision, objectives and targets Taking into account wider geographical area and cross boundary travel Building stakeholder involvement into the process more fully to get better ownership of the Plan; Focusing on the contribution of transport to supporting the wider policy agenda Demonstrating clear linkages between objectives and measures implemented to achieve outcomes.

Successful Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans: City of York Highly Rated LTPs by UK Department for Transport Centre of Excellence Status: LTP1: Park & Ride and Cycling LTP2: Improved Travel Choices in Towns And Cities Awarded Transport Authority of the Year in 2003 Success dates back to 1990s sustainable planning One of first authorities to develop Hierarchy of Transport Users Also developed pedestrian & cycle route networks Park & Ride cornerstone of approach Tackling Tough Transport Choices Doing nothing is not an option!!!

Key performance statistics: Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans: City of York Peak period traffic levels have been stable since 2006 Bus patronage remaining stable, despite falling patronage elsewhere in the country Around 3 million Park & Ride per year 45% reduction in killed and seriously injured road casualties ahead of the target 95% of schools in York having a travel plan in place Significant increase in the numbers of people cycling in the city
