March 2014 GROW Tulsa Garden Center News Gardening by the Book LAWNS 2435 S. Peoria Ave Tulsa, OK 74114 918-746-5125 www.tulsagardencenter.com Contributions: January 8, 2013 February 7, 2014 Tulsa Garden Center National Association of Parliamentarians M & M Lumber Company Linnaeus Teaching Garden Jeanette Easterling John L. King Bill Engelhardt Like Tulsa Garden Center on Facebook Oklahoma s geographic and climatic conditions are about as diverse as the number of turf grass species in the state, making lawn care challenging. Almost every homeowner would love to have a better lawn greener, denser, healthier. Prior to National Lawn Care month in April, these books can help with lawn evaluations and improvements. Some homeowners want alternatives to traditional lawns. Beautiful No-Mow Yards (Timber Press, 2012) showcases a diverse variety of possibilities. Inspiring and eco-friendly, the benefits of smaller lawns or even no lawn at all are discussed. The process is explained of converting step by step a lawn to a meadow, prairie, or edible garden. Gardeners will be pleased to learn design tips to reduce maintenance. Profiles for 100 of the best ground-layer plants are included. The Complete Guide to a Better Lawn (Creative Publishing, 2011) guides the homeowner by its color photographs for all topics. Using fertilizer and herbicides are included in these improvement guidelines. Solving simple to extensive lawn problems is covered. The appendix has the lawn care equipment user s guide as well as various resource help with the company contact information. Lawn Gone! (Ten Speed Press, 2013) is for beginning gardeners wishing low-water, easycare, money-saving lawn alternatives. Realistic choices, achievable plans and simple instructions for lawn renovation are included. Regional plant recommendations, including the Southern plains, are discussed.. Alternative grasses that seldom need mowing are Intriguing choices. The mystery of lawn care and maintenance is eliminated in The Oklahoma Lawn Guide (Cool Springs Press, 2007). Author Steve Dobbs is an award-winning horticulturist and garden writer who is knowledgeable about Oklahoma. He explains various methods of planting a new lawn or renovating an existing one. Included are the best grass varieties and maintenance schedule for the various parts of the state. Many homeowners, concerned about the effect of chemicals, have turned to natural methods to keep their yards healthy and inviting. Organic Lawn Care Manual (Storey Pub., 2007) explains how to evaluate lawn care needs, create healthy soil, and select drought resistant grass. Whether you have new construction, lawn renovation, or a nearly no-mow lawn, this book can help. Toro Expert Guide to Lawns (Creative Homeowner, 2008) will help the reader accomplish practical tasks during a weekend. Its environmentally responsible approach will appeal to many. Instruction is offered on improving the lawn s appearance and soil makeup and then winning the war against weeds. Especially helpful is the user s guide to tools and equipment.
