Hazardous Materials Management It is vital that the fire department, as first emergency responders be aware of the location, quantity, use and potential hazards of materials in the workplace. Our traditional operating procedures, rush in, save lives, and extinguish, cannot be employed when dealing with hazardous materials that can be lethal if proper evaluation of information and precautions are not implemented. The Fire Department accepts responsibility to provide hazardous materials response to its community, and clearly recognizes the need to acquire the necessary information to ensure prompt implementation of an action plan. The plan is based on information gathered and the evaluation of the capabilities of available personnel, personal protective equipment, and control equipment. Hazardous Materials Management Plan GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Complete the information following if your facility meets the following criteria: 1. Complete a plan if your business/facility meets the following criteria as defined by the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act: CLASS 1 CLASS 2 CLASS 3 CLASS 4 CLASS 5 CLASS 6 CLASS 7 CLASS 8 CLASS 9 EXPLOSIVES COMPRESSED GASES FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS FLAMMABLE SOLIDS OXIDIZERS AND ORGANIC PEROXIDES POISONOUS AND INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES RADIOACTIVES CORROSIVE SUBSTANCES MISCELLANEOUS PRODUCTS OR SUBSTANCES (Note: Class 9 includes any materials that present dangers to warrant regulation in transport but which cannot be ascribed to any other Class) 2. Identify, Hazardous Materials and Wastes on site 2. Key in all information. This is a necessity, especially when dealing with chemical names, as mistakes and misinformation occurs due to handwriting legibility. 4. Indicate on the diagram (digital if possible) the location of your facility relating to adjacent streets, properties, and other buildings. Show the hazardous material storage areas inside and outside the facility. 5. Designate each hazardous material storage. Identify each location with a letter of the alphabet, starting with A, B, C etc. This will tie your chemicals on the hazardous materials Inventory statement to their location on the map. (NOTE: If symbols are to be used, refer to sample symbols provided) 6. Indicate North direction in top right corner of page 8. Indicate approximate scale 8. Plan should contain the following: a) Show and label the location of these following structures: - Buildings and other above ground structures - Above aground and below ground storage tank locations (size of tanks in litres) - Storm and sewer drains - Parking and access roads and routes - Loading area(s) - Secondary containment areas outside any building (including spill control, drains and tanks) b) Location of Emergency Response Equipment: - Fire extinguishers - Spill control equipment or containment system - Safety showers - Emergency shut off switches (indicates type i.e. toxic gas shut off, water shut off, etc.) 15
