Fundamental of LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE ARL 200 Dasa ar-dasar ARSI TEKTUR LANSKAP LANDSCAPE CHARACTER Department of Landscape Architecture Faculty of Agriculture Bogor Agricultural University If we notice the composition of natural landscape around us, we ll see there s harmony or unity among the constituent elements. Those natural events make a STRONG LANDSCAPE CHARACTER. UNITY ~ STRONG CHARACTER Grojogan Sewu, Karanganyar, Central Java If the unity being more perfect it will generate the stronger landscape character TURE Fund damental of LAN DSCAPE ARCHITECT Main Topics: 1. The Natural Landscape 2. Landscape Modification: a. Elimination of Incongruous Elements b. Accentuation of Natural Form c. Major Feature d. Minor Feature e. Destruction of the Natural Forms f. Alteration of the Natural Form 3. The Built Environment 1

Imagine: 1. The Natural Landscape Situation ti that t we see when visiting iti Grojogan Sewu Waterfall. The water falls from the water source on the mountain where the water is clean, fresh, and cold. The mountaineous vegetation grows there. The sound of waterfall give us the cheering sense and a very deep emotion. The view of the sky is so bright and clear, the fog that closing our view means that the air is still fresh. Those are the unity that form landscape character in a forest with the waterfall in it. 2

In facing any landscape character and any emotion (happy, sad, missing, etc), we feel a real happiness in feeling the unity and harmony. Degree or harmony strength is an indicator, not just happiness that made but also the quality of the beauty Beauty comes from the harmony relation of the whole components that t seen or felt Natural landscape beauty is very variative, in english it s called in some terms: The picturesque The bizarre The delicate The stark The majestic The ethereal The idyllic The graceful The serene Landscape character categories are also variative such as: Mountain Dune Prairie Swamp Lake Sea Stream Hill Canyon Fores River Valley Pond Desert Plain The landscape character category can still be specified to became more specific. Landscape character of the forest can be specified as: Teak forest Pine forest Meranti forest Bamboo forest Swamp forest seagrass g etc Redwood eucalyptus 3

The opposite of beauty is ugliness. Ugliness comes from the less of the unity among the components, or from the presence of one or some elements that do not comply. 2. Landscape Modification (1) Elemination By just paying attention to the visual aspect of site character, the development of natural landscape area must be done in a way to protect him and reinforce the inherent quality of the landscape. Therefore should eliminate distracting objects, and it is possible to insert an object with the aim to increase or strengthen the natural character. (Simond) An object that doesn't match its presence in a landscape will cause visual disturbances and eventually cause mental/ emotional disorders We are allowed to remove (eliminate) an element that cause a conflict againts that natural landscape character. 4

(2) Accentuation.the landscape character of any area may be developed or intensified by eliminating any negative elements and by accentuating its positive qualities. (Simond) (3) Major Feature There are dominant natural landscape forms, features, and forces that we can alter little, if at all. We must accept them and adapt ourselves and our planning to them. (Simond) Forms of the topography (which it should be by default): mountains, canyons, coastal Feature (which it should be by default): rain, fog, dew, the surface of the ground water (water table), the temperature of the air. Force (which it should be by default): wind, tides, ocean waves, air flow, the growth process, sunlight. It takes a wise landscape planning of the natural landscape character regarding all of the constraint and possibility. (4) Minor Feature Hilly landscape character will give optimum results or use if it s protected from changes. Example of the wrong development of urban areas that expense of natural landscape character in Batam. Full attention must be applied to the planning : - The placement of the city - Community zoning - Development of highways - The placement of industrial area - Orientation or layout of the house and its garden. In order not damaging the hilly landscape, then planting the forest of wood products, fruits, or seeds can be done. Japan is one of the countries that developed the Valley or city that blends in with the hills or in the middle of the island, keeping its natural landscape character protected. 5

(5) Alteration of Landscape Form (6) Intensification of Landscape Form Preservation Accentuation Alteration Destruction The natural aspect of a hill might be modified completely through the grading work and construction. Alteration of landscape may have bad result in the landscape or for the security of landscape underneath, for example in the form of erosion, landslides and flooding. The Natural Site Profile Site negated Site dramatized Landscape form can be intensified by strengthening the look. 1. SUITABILITY 3. Built Environment All of the changing plans on the landscape should give priority to achieve the attributes of the beauty. All of the plans in landscape will effect on itself. The effect is not only on particular landscape but also reaching aroud of it. 6

2. HARMONY The untouched landscape shows that there is a balance. The landscape is cohesive, harmonious order, the whole landscape is formed by geological structures, climate, its growth, and other forces of nature. 3. CONTRAST Shape color texture of an object can be strenghten the look by contrast technic. The contrast of natural landscape can be seen on highway construction. Once a man enters the natural landscapes, then she/he would change the topography and develop its natural harmony, or leveling the ground and ruin it. Thank You 7
