DC Gerber attended the King County Oil Train Table Top Exercise on Tuesday, August 5 th in Renton. Crews participated in the National Night Out project, with special appearances with Sparky, on Tuesday, August 5 th in Auburn neighborhoods. The VRFA participated in the annual Auburn Days parade on Saturday, August 10 th in downtown Auburn. This Week: Command Staff will conduct their monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 12 th at Headquarters Station 31. The monthly meetings of the Finance Committee and the Board of Governance will be held on Tuesday, August 12 th at Headquarters Station 31. Administrator Robertson will attend the meeting of the Washington Fire Chiefs Legislative Committee on Wednesday, August 13 th in Olympia. 1
On Wednesday, August 13 th, DC Gerber will attend preparatory meeting for the Green River Community College (GRCC) table top exercise at GRCC. DC Swearingen & Director Horaski will attend a meeting with King County EMS budget staff regarding Basic Life Support funding from the EMS levy on Wednesday, August 13 th in Bellevue. 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: AID Call: (Pacific) On Monday, August 4 th at 10:30 a.m., firefighters assisted a female that was having minor post-surgery bleeding. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and left at home. Car Fire: (Auburn) On Tuesday, August 5 th at 9:00 p.m., firefighters responded to report of a car fire in the parking lot of a local business. Firefighters arrived to find fire coming from the engine compartment of the vehicle. The crew quickly extinguished the fire saving the passenger compartment of the car. The fire is under investigation. Aid Call: (Algona) On Wednesday, August 6 th at 6:31 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to assist a female with nausea and chest pain. The patient was evaluated by King County Medics and then transported to a local hospital via a private ambulance. Apartment Fire: (Auburn) On Thursday, August 7 th at 4:52 a.m., the Valley Regional Fire Authority and Kent Fire Department RFA responded to a report of an upper deck on fire with subject trapped. On location VRFA units discovered the fire had been extinguished by a neighbor with a garden hose and the trapped subject had evacuated. Firefighters checked the attic above the deck for any fire extension and ensured the fire on the deck was extinguished. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. Fire investigators are on scene determining the fire s cause and origin. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Friday, August 8 th at 11:40 a.m., firefighters assisted an adult female experiencing severe back pain. The patient was transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) by private ambulance. Service Call: (Lea Hill) On Thursday, August 9 th at 8:21 a.m., firefighters responded to smoke investigation along the Green River Valley from a residence. The smoke column dissipated while investigating the location. Motor Vehicle Accident: (Auburn) On Sunday, August 10 th at approximately 7 p.m., firefighters dispatched to a single car into a fence 2
with wires down. Firefighters arrived on scene and determined that the driver was uninjured and that the wires were not power lines. The scene was turned over to Auburn Police. Training Activities Projected: 3 rd Quarter Defibrillation Flame Sim lab training for Day Shift Officers Proposed FY 2015 Draft Training, Safety & EMS Budget with Plan Improvements presented. 4 Recruits are attending Wa Recruit Academy 2014-03 Fire Marshal s Office: Business Inspections: ICC certified Deputy Fire Marshals (DFM) performed 15 initial and follow-up inspections of commercial and multifamily occupancies in Auburn. This week we will continue the inspection program in Auburn. Deputy Fire Marshal Larry Upton completed the follow-up report for a fire lane/parking solution in a business complex in Pacific. Deputy Fire Marshal Karen Stewart started the application process for the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) certification. DFM Stewart worked with a local auto parts shop to deal with the theft of their FDC. 3

Sparky the Fire Dog made special appearances at several of the gatherings. Algona and Pacific did not host events that evening. Station 38 crews and PIEO staff participated in the Pacific Police Department Open House, conducting engine tours, staffing an information table, providing Sparky the Fire Dog and a chance for kids to get wet when the engine sprayed water near the community center. 4
The VRFA took part in the Auburn Days parade with Engine 31, the antique fire engine and Sparky the Fire Dog. Two additional children were referred to the Fire Stoppers program. Fire Investigation: There were 5 incidents requiring the services of the SKFITF Fire Investigators this week. A car fire in Lea Hill caused about $100 damage. A wire supplying power to the stereo melted and the cause was ruled accidental. An accidental fire in a furnace caused about $1,000 damage to a home in Lea Hill. The circuit board completely failed and burned through. A small accidental fire in the laundry room caused about $25 damage to the dryer in a home in Pacific. A fire on a porch in a north Auburn home caused about $10,500 in damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. A car fire in Auburn caused $4,000 in damage. The driver noticed smoke from the vents as he was driving. The driver was able to pull safely into a parking lot before flames destroyed the vehicle. The cause is accidental. Planning and Logistics P&L received eight apparatus and six facility and small tool maintenance requests. BC Day was notified that the VRFA was awarded an $85,000 Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant (AFG) for Blue Card Command training. This training curriculum is widely used in Zone 3 for company and command officers and includes best practices for managing incident operations at structure fires. 5
