Range Melbourne grey Vendome pavers 03 The Vendome paver is installed perpendicular to the direction of the traffi c in order to avoid long continuous lines contrary to the desired natural look.

Range Tacoma grey Trafalgar pavers Range Aberdeen grey Celtik wall Range Aberdeen grey Celtik curb 04 04 Because it is marked off by a soldier course border in a different colour and texture, the stairway is both easily visible and safe. 05 05 The steps of the stairway with the same width and depth, as well as a projecting ledge guarantee stability and safety 06 Encircled with beautiful landscaping where greenery and rock blend around the wall, the terrace fi ts perfectly into its setting 06 8

Range Danville beige Mondrian slab 07 07 Classic and well balanced, the landscape design is enhanced by wide Mondrian slabs in tune with the wide rectangular space of the arbor. 08 08 The Mondrian slab, when laid on edge, allows you to create a border effect for the entire project. In the centre, the modular pattern provides the right balance of colour and texture. 11

Range Chatham beige Trafalgar large square pavers Range Chatham beige Trafalgar pavers Range Cardigan brown Celtik wall Range Cardigan brown Celtik curb 09 10 09 A reminder of the archway to the car entrance, the rounded shape of the intermediate and upper landings creates a delightful visual unity. 10 The entrance, which is fairly wide and open, ensures stability and safety with its even steps leading to a second landing. 11 Permacon is proud to have helped a child s dream come true thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. 11 Laid down diagonally, the terrace pavers give the impression of a larger space. 13

Range Bourbon beige Mega-Trafalgar pavers Range Colorado beige Subterra pavers Range Sheffield beige and black Celtik wall Range Sheffield beige and black Celtik curb 13 13 Used for a specific parking space, a portion of the driveway is clearly outlined thanks to permeable Subterra pavers. The modular format blends perfectly with the wider Mega-Trafalgar paver 12 12 Right from the entrance, the rectangular shape of the walkway leading to the door of the home marks a very contemporary landscape design. 15

Range Bourbon beige Mega-Trafalgar pavers Range Sheffield beige and black Celtik wall 14 The landscaping is cleverly subdivided according to the use of the premises. 14 15 The double waterfall fl owing into the swimming pool creates a peaceful, quiet atmosphere by muffl ing other ambient sounds. 15 16 Repeated in all of the details from the Mega-Trafalgar pavers to the table on the terrace to the areas of greenery and the swimming pool the rectangular shape lends a clean and uncluttered appearance to the landscape design. 16 16

Range Danville beige Mega-Arbel pavers Range Orleans grey Celtik wall 20 19 18 17 An interesting detail, a large natural rock blends perfectly into the landscaping. 18 Marking the boundaries of the terrace, the capping of the Celtik wall is extended to create the steps of the staircase featuring landings. 19 On the same level as the house, the terrace becomes an additional room for enjoying the summer months. 20 The Mega-Arbel paver is the ideal choice for complementing the natural stone pattern of the exterior cladding. With this beautifully simple landscape design, wasted space fi nds a new use. 33 With their irregular shapes, the Mega-Arbel pavers around the swimming pool border the grass in a natural way. 30 30 Simple, comfortable furniture ideally suits the dimensions of a patio whose proportions properly refl ect both the space available and the uses it will be put to. 33 25

Range Auvergne charcoal Paleo pavers Range Oxford charcoal Celtik wall 38 37 Created with Paleo circle pavers, the eating area repeats the perfect circle located in front of the main entry (p. 27). 38 The slightly raised dining area stands out clearly in relation to the space for the swimming pool. 37 29

BEFORE Range Brittany beige Bergerac pavers Range Sheffield beige and black Celtik wall 39 39 An intelligent landscape design on several levels follows the topography of the property. 40 A material of a different texture and colour creates the illusion of a dry waterfall moving from the upper level and fl owing into the swimming pool. 40 41 42 41 The rounded shape of the walls on the various levels blends in with the curve of the pool. 42 Surrounding the pool, a wide wall covered with plants marks the change in level. 30

43 The narrowing of the terrace in front of the swimming pool creates a pathway effect that defi nes two distinct spaces. 44 Laid down diagonally, the pavers provide an impression of depth and reinforce the effect of a pathway leading to the swimming pool. 45 The change in materials and in the direction in which the pavers are positioned clearly distinguishes the pool area from the terrace. Range Shell beige Paleo Modular large square pavers Range Gascony beige Bergerac Plus pavers Range Sheffield beige and black Celtik wall 43 44 45 46 The soldier course of the terrace ensures wonderful continuity with the pavers in the pool area. 47 The curves of the terrace widen the multipurpose space and allow for the separation of the eating and sunbathing areas. 46 47 33

Range Ardennes grey Mega-Bergerac Plus pavers Range Aberdeen grey Celtik wall 52 48 51 48 Indirect lighting lends a dramatic effect to the entire setting. 49 49 Mirroring the home, the landscaping is designed with a single material and repeats the dominant rectangular form of its architecture. 51 A small waterfall of a unique and original design cascades into the pool of water plants that in turn empties into the swimming pool. 50 The capping in large squares all around the swimming pool and the water garden insures its unity with the overall landscape design. 50 52 The stepping stones, in the center of the pond, add a touch of Zen to the landscape design and facilitate the maintenance of the water garden and grass. 35

Range Danville beige Mega-Arbel pavers Range Bourbon beige Mega-Trafalgar pavers 54 55 55 The fl awless bends of the driveway blend well with the treed surroundings, soften the view and give the impression of an even larger space. 53 Mega-Arbel and Mega-Trafalgar pavers are cleverly used to carefully separate pedestrian areas from those reserved for cars. 54 The wide soldier course border is well proportioned in relation to the size of the entryway. 53 36

A B C D E F Create an inviting entrance. A paved surface that is wide enough to accommodate a baby stroller without blocking the way, a sidewalk with lines of coloured pavers, a low wall with fl owerpots sitting on top, and steps that are properly positioned and defi ned are all ways to create an inviting entrance. Differentiate the functions of various areas. Each space should be defi ned according to how it will be used with the help of walls, a line of colour in pavers, or a different pattern or texture. You should choose more understated, detailed designs for quiet areas and walkways, bigger and simpler looks in spaces reserved for cars, and more subdued solutions for service areas. Create a multipurpose space. Are you missing place for different spaces? Multi purpose spaces are the solution. All you have to do is adapt the function of an element of your design in an imaginative and safe manner, according to the occasion. For example, a wall can be used as a bar at cocktail hour, or a row of pavers located a safe distance from the barbecue can mark out a dance fl oor. Seek consistency between colours and textures. Opt for harmonious colour schemes rather than a single colour. Take into consideration the various elements of your environment textures, colours, shapes, walls and plants and use the suggestions in the table created by our experts to obtain a monochromatic, contrasting or innovating look (p. 95). Make sure that any changes in level are comfortable and safe. Shapes and colours that help you remember your way, steps of equal height and depth, the beginning and end of stairways that are properly marked out by changes in paver colour, the direction in which pavers are laid or a supporting wall these are all ways to ensure the comfort and safety of your every step. Provide good drainage for your projects. A slight 1% to 2% slope is necessary to ensure quick drainage of surface water and prevent puddling or the build-up of ice. Just as important, proper drainage will maintain these gradients and prevent surfaces from buckling. G LANDSCAPING FUNDAMENTALS F D B K E J A I D K L B M N B E L C M N E C B D E H G Give some consideration to utility areas. Don t neglect these spaces. Include them in your design by harmonizing the choice of surface materials at ground level and by concealing them behind visual screens. You could have, for example, a space hidden behind a wall for your supply of firewood or your garbage and recycling bins. H F H D E I M L G H K E L I D N M D L L G Design functional and comfortable doorsteps. Make sure that the width and height of the doorstep are adequate; that you will have sufficient space for welcoming visitors and that you will be able to easily walk over the doorstep without rain or water from the garden getting into your home. J A N M L K J I Defi ne surface borders. Be a complete perfectionist. Finishing touches such as an invisible or concrete border, a wall capping or a harmonious link between two surfaces will enhance the overall result of your outdoor design project. Choose materials designed for specific uses. For an attractive, comfortable and safe landscape design, choose the right material for the specifi c location: a rounded, anti-slip capping that is easy to grab onto at the edge of the pool, smaller and smoother pavers for pedestrian walkways, pavers with more rugged textures for cars and so on. 90 Create a transition between two spaces. Indicate changes in space in a striking manner by using steps or walls, or do it more subtly through a line on the ground or a different material on a continuous surface. When two spaces are very different, a distinctive pattern employing features of both spaces will soften the transition by lending it a special look. Take advantage of the site s topography or create a natural looking one of your own. In order to create transitions between the home and the levels of a sloping property, blend steps and walls together. On a fl at piece of property, shape the surface to create small mounds of earth that can be used to support certain elements of your design the wall of a belvedere terrace, for example. Mark off your entrance. Clearly indicate the division between your private space and public property with columns, the use of texture, pattern and colour or the width of the paved surface that will designate your entrance. This will give the impression of a larger property and increase its value. 91 Create links between the building and the landscape design. Preserve the unique atmosphere of your design by repeating elements of shapes, colours or textures found in an architectural detail from the home s exterior.

To make your arrangement harmonious, it is best to use and combine various tones and colours over the different planes or surfaces, as the eye sees light differently depending on the characteristics of the lit surface. In fact, the same colour can look different depending on whether it is on a vertical or horizontal surface, a textured or smooth, wet or dry surface, or whether it is in the shade or in full sun. To create harmony, therefore, combine textures, shapes and colours while remembering to differentiate between the functions of each element. CHOOSE YOUR COLOUR... Whether you prefer a classical, contemporary or avant-garde style, Permacon products allow you to express yourself and create a colour-rich project that suits your taste. To help you defi ne the style you are looking for, we suggest three approaches to selecting the colours: MONOCHROMATIC In this classical approach, you choose among different tones in a single colour palette. For example, you can use different tones of grey for various components in the whole, i.e. your home s exterior cladding, walls or paved surfaces. CONTRASTING More contemporary, this approach is geared toward juxtaposition by contrast and opposing colours. It encourages you to select similar tones in different colour palettes. For example, you can combine beige and brown, grey and charcoal, to highlight specifi c details (bands or insertions) or components (fl owerbeds, paths, etc.) in the project, while maintaining an overall tone that is similar to your home s exterior cladding. INNOVATIVE More daring, this avant-garde approach prompts you to select various strong tones while using a nuance present in one of the components of the project or home. For example, rather than trying to match the colour of your home s exterior cladding, you can opt for a nuance of the colour in an architectural detail (roof, soffi t or ornamentation around the openings). Tips and tricks Pavers designed to withstand the climate Permacon s products are designed to withstand our tough winters; they are not affected by temperature changes or de-icing salts. However, the steel blades from the snow removal equipment must be covered with a protective plate. Easy maintenance, gives you time to enjoy life Accidents happen. However, a stained paver can quickly be replaced and in some cases, the paver is reversible. We recommend that owners keep a few spare pavers aside, just in case. More stable sand makes your life easier Regular sand or Permacon s Permapro polymeric sand? Experience shows that Permapro polymeric sand stays in place, even after many rainfalls. It provides better support and more protection from joint erosion, reducing the chances of fi nding sand at the bottom of your pool. Sealant to accentuate the colours The decision to apply a sealant is really a matter of taste. Permacon s products are designed to resist discolouration, so it is not necessary to apply a sealant. However, you may opt to use it to give paver surfaces a shiny and wet look. With polymeric sand: say goodbye to weeds and unwanted insects Permacon s Permapro polymeric sand helps banish weeds and prevent damage caused by insects. Only wind borne weeds can take root. Normal maintenance using appropriate weed control products is suffi cient. Stages of your project Whether you decide to build your project yourself or hire a qualifi ed landscaper, it is always a good idea to be aware of the major stages that a project consists of. For more information, check the permacon.ca website and download our Technical guide. You can also view our installation video, showing the various stages in creating a patio. PAVERS AND/OR SLABS Minimum excavation and minimum foundation Nature of project Garage Entrance Patio or sidewalk Nature of soil Clay (2) Sandy Clay Sandy 1 Excavation The minimum required depth to be excavated varies depending on the nature of the project and type of soil. Consult our Technical guide for the depth needed for your project. The excavation area should exceed the area to be paved by 1 to 1 1/2 times the depth of the foundation. Do not forget to build in a minimal slope to provide proper drainage. We recommend installing geotextile between the natural soil and the foundation to keep them from combining, and to achieve greater stability. 2 Foundation To provide for optimal stability, cover the excavated area with layers of crushed stone compacting the soil several times. 3 Curbs If you are using a Universal Curb, you should install the curbs now. If you are using Celtik Curb or Celtik Mega Curb, it should be installed in step 5, before the pavers have been stabilized. 4 Bed Spread an even layer of concrete sand, and level the surface thoroughly. Any major difference in the thickness of the installation bed can cause unevenness in the paved surface. Do not compact the sand before installing the pavers. Compacting the pavers later using a vibrating plate will ensure the pavers are thoroughly embedded in the installation bed. 5 Installing slabs or pavers Lay out the pavers according to the pattern selected, making sure to keep the space between the pavers even. Regularly check the alignment of the pavers. Install Celtik Curbs or Celtik Mega Curbs on either side of the pavement, and stabilize the pavers with the vibrating plate. This fi nal stabilizing operation does not apply to slabs. 6 Filling the joints If you have installed pavers, cover them with sand and fi ll the joints by sweeping in all directions. For best results, use Permacon s Permapro polymeric sand. Stabilize the pavers once more using the vibrating plate. This fi nal stabilizing operation does not apply to slabs. 4 5 2 3 1 6 RETAINING WALL See our technical guide for technical details on different types of walls. 1 Excavation Dig a trench to a depth that will accommodate the thickness of the foundation and the first tier(s) of buried blocks. As a general rule, 10% of the wall s height is underground. 2 Preparation of the bed Install a geotextile membrane to keep earth from clogging the drainage system. 3 Foundation Prepare a foundation using layers of crushed stone, and compact the surface. Install a perforated drain. The drain will be covered by clean stone in step 5. 4 First row Place the blocks level on the compacted foundation. 5 Building the wall Place the blocks for the subsequent rows. Fill in the space behind the blocks with clean stone. 6 Finishing Place the fi nal row of blocks or use capping modules, depending on the type of product you selected. Cover the clean stone with the remaining geotextile and fi nish the installation behind the wall. NOTE: It is important to install capping modules using Permapro concrete adhesive. 5 4 6 1 3 2 STEPS 1 Foundation On the compacted surface, place a whole construction block or a universal curb to support the riser. The surface of the block should be even with the paved surface. 2 First riser Install the first risers. Fill behind with crushed stone, and compact thoroughly. TIP: To alternate the joints, start the riser with a module that has been cut in half. 3 First step Install the step module on top of the riser, making sure to insert the square anchor. NOTE: It is important to install the riser and step modules using Permapro concrete adhesive. 4 Subsequent rows Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 until you reach the desired height. 3 4 WALL CHARACTERISTICS Maximum possible height without overload at the top of slope wall Minimum Wall Amount of blocks including buried module possible radius angle required Type of block Installation method Feet Metres Feet Metres Degree Per sq. metre Per sq. foot Universal* Slope block Without joints 4.0 1.20 5.0 1.5 15 35 3.2 50 mm (2 ) joints 3.25 1.00 5.0 1.5 15 28 2.6 100 mm (4 ) joints 2.75 0.80 5.0 1.5 15 24 2.2 Split-face Universal* Without joints 5.0 1.5 5.0 1.5 10 35 3.2 Slope block 50 mm (2 ) joints 4.25 1.3 5.0 1.5 10 28 2.6 100 mm (4 ) joints 3.7 1.1 5.0 1.5 10 24 2.2 (1) Keystone* System Mini and/or compact 3.0 0.9 4.0 1.2 0 or 9 22 and/or 11 2 and/or 1 1 2 Minimum excavation required 400 mm 300 mm 350 mm 250 mm (16 ) (12 ) (14 ) (10 ) Minimum foundation thickness 300 mm 200 mm 250 mm 150 mm (20-0 mm (0-3/4 ) crushed stone) (12 ) (8 ) (10 ) (6 ) Minimum/maximum uncompacted 15 to 25 mm 15 to 25 mm 15 to 25 mm 15 to 25 mm installation (1) bed (5/8 to 1 ) (5/8 to 1 ) (5/8 to 1 ) (5/8 to 1 ) Thickness of the paving stone 60 mm or 80 mm 60 mm or 80 mm 60 mm or 80 mm 60 mm or 80 mm (2 3/8 or 3 1/8 ) (2 3/8 or 3 1/8 ) (2 3/8 or 3 1/8 ) (2 3/8 or 3 1/8 ) The information in this table shows the minimum required for a job well done.
