Objectives of EnRoute Researchers Member states Cities MAES community of practise on urban ecosystems EU services Operationalise the urban MAES indicator framework Analyse how science supports urban policy Enhance networking activity on urban GI 3
Operationalise the urban MAES indicator framework Urban Green Infrastructure role Urban development Biodiversity The provision of UES Functional composition of cities Type of contributions to the EU-BD goals Biophysical Health and wellbeing 4
The starting point MAES City labs EU-cross scale assessment 5
The cities Functional Urban Areas (FUA) 697 FUA The city labs 16 city-labs 21 cities Support on UGI & health research 6
How does science support urban policy? How policies at different levels of governance can support urban policy on GI How MAES outcomes are taken up at local level How policies on GI relate with other policies Cross-scale integration Horizontal policy -integration Broad Web Survey Close-ended questions Focus on the degree the UGI and the UES framework are integrated in the planning system from a localregional-national perspective. Narrow Web Survey Open-ended questions Focus: mainstreaming of the ES concept into policy and planning (how science supports policy) 7
Enhance networking activity on urban GI MAES urban pilot and the conference The EU Urban Agenda, Nature-Based Solutions and Green Infrastructure (31 May 2016, Paushuize, Utrecht) concluded that there was interest to establish a partnership with regards to NBS/MAES. EnRoute will scope for networking opportunities 8
The 1 st workshop: Rome When: 7-8/03/2017 in Rome (University La Sapienza ) Participants (20 cities + DG ENV; EEA; JRC) Aim: to present the overall structure of the project, to discuss the contribution of city experts, to define a common work program for a cross-scale urban ecosystem assessment. Structure: plenary presentations + interactive parallel sessions 9
Urban Ecosystem Conditions All the city labs have indicators on conditions of Urban Ecosystems 4 city las have data on Urban Biodiversity Ecosystem Condition and Biodiversity Existing targets 10
Ecosystem Services Tallin: many different thematic maps of GI (valuable inputs for the implementation of ES indicators) Padova & Lisbon: need of methods to transform (derive from) ecosystem mapping into ES maps 11
Key interests adopt a framework for mapping and assessing of GI and ESS that is consistent across Europe. vertical policy integration and development 12
UGI and Health Research Unit: Case Register, Epidemiology, Economics and Geography of Mental Health Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement Sciences University of Verona, Italy UGI and health: background knowledge Health and well-being indicators Support the spatial and statistical analyses of health and well-being data 13
Science-policy Participants in EnRoute were challenged to talk about: Research shows SPI as prerequisite for successful policy In Rome What is their role in SPI? What do they expect? What can they contribute? Next steps Broad survey Narrow survey 14
Can we still participate? YES Being part of the Network Answer to the Broad Survey Answer to the Narrow Survey Target: stakeholders/practitio ners Target: researchers/stakehold ers/practitioners Short and translated in local language Open-ended questions 15
