Benefits of Using Soft Water: Save money on the cost of water heating. Reduce the amounts of soaps and detergents you use with soft water. Cleaning time is reduced. The silky-smooth feeling you may experience while rinsing the soap off your skin during a shower is your natural body oils. Soap actually rinses off much faster with soft/ conditioned water, but you may not feel like the soap is rinsed off because of this silky-smooth feeling. Requirements for Operation This softening system will operate at maximum efficiency when the following conditions are considered. TIPS: Salt: Using a clean grade of salt will help eliminate the need to clean out the brine tank. If the water supply contains iron, the use of an iron inhibiting salt can help the water quality. Ask your dealer for the recommended salt for your system. Bypass: When installing a water conditioner, it is required that the system have a bypass in place to be able to shut off the conditioner without turning off the water supply. Your Krystal Pure water system comes with a bypass / source select valve as standard equipment. Drain There must be an adequate drain fixture (capable of 5gpm flow) nearby to remove discharge water. The drain must be within 20 of the system using ½ tubing. Use ¾ tubing for distances over 20 and consult your dealer for distances over 40. Freezing: The water conditioner and the drain line must be protected from freezing temperatures. Sand: If sand or sediment is present in the water supply, a sediment filter should be installed ahead of the system. Make sure outlet is not on a timer or a switch 5

Warnings Before installation, read through this manual thoroughly and mail in warranty card. Then obtain all materials and tools needed for installation. All plumbing and electrical work should be performed by an accredited professional to ensure all federal, state, local and municipal codes are met. Do not use the system with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system. Check existing plumbing and repair any defects or problems in the plumbing prior to install of water softener. Improper installation may void warranty. Do not let unit freeze or place unit where unit, connections, or drain lines will ever be subject to room temperatures under 40 F, or over 140 F. Avoid placing unit in direct sunlight or outdoors, as it may damage any non-metallic parts. Do not lay unit down on its side, or drop, or set on sharp protrusions. Do not use the brine tube, injector body, or other connectors on the Krystal Pure valve as a handle to carry the system. Ensure there is salt or potassium in the brine tank. The brine tank should contain clean water softening salt only, at least 99.5% pure. Do not use small grain salt. When there is moderate to high turbidity, a filter should be installed before the water softening system on the inlet side. If certain iron types are present in water supply, proper pre-treatment will be required. If the water pressure exceeds 80 psi, installing a pressure reducing valve before the water inlet is highly recommended. If the water pressure is under 20 psi, a booster pump must be installed before the water inlet. It is not recommended to use soft water on your outside faucets for watering or sprinkling. Check with your pool company to see what it recommends about soft water use in your pool. Check with your evaporative cooler company to see what it recommends about soft water use in your coolers. Replacement parts for the KS Series valves should only be purchased through AmeriFlow Water Systems, Inc. Electrical components, such as transformers, are specific to the KS Series valves from Ameriflow Water Systems, Inc. Any modification to Krystal Pure equipment, which is outside the standard scope of supply, voids the product warranty. Krystal Pure equipment, like all modern electronic devices, can be damaged by electrical surges or brown outs. Every effort has been taken to harden the circuits, by design, to protect against such events. These precautions, or even additional surge protection, are not 100% effective. Therefore, equipment damage caused by abnormal electrical events is not covered by warranty. Failure to use this product within the described conditions may void the warranty 6

Water Conditioning Information IRON Iron in water can cause stains on clothing and plumbing fixtures. It can negatively affect the taste of food, drinking water, and other beverages. Iron in water is measured in parts per million (ppm). The total ppm of iron, and type or types, is determined by chemical analysis. Three different types of iron in water are: Ferrous (clear water) iron Ferric (red water) iron Bacterial and organically bound iron Ferrous iron is soluble and dissolves in water. This water softener will reduce moderate amounts of this type of iron (see specifications). Ferrous iron is usually detected by taking a sample of water in a clear bottle or glass. Immediately after taking, the sample is clear. As the water sample stands, it gradually clouds and turns slightly yellow or brown as air oxidizes the iron. This usually occurs in 15 to 30 minutes. When using the softener to reduce Ferrous iron, add 5 grains to the hardness setting for every 1 ppm of Ferrous iron. Ferric iron is insoluble. Water softeners will not remove ferric iron. This iron is visible immediately when drawn from a faucet because it has oxidized before reaching the home. It appears as small cloudy yellow, orange, or reddish suspended particles. After the water stands for a period of time, the particles settle to the bottom of the container. Generally, these irons are removed from water by filtration. Iron bacteria are small living organisms which naturally occur in soil, shallow groundwater, and surface waters. Does this describe your water? Red stains in the sinks Swampy, oily, or other unpleasant tastes or smells Red, slimy growths in the toilet tank If so, your well or water system may have iron bacteria. If your water contains any type of iron other than low amounts of "clear water iron," STOP. You will need additional equipment. Lowe's offers a test kit called H2O+. Once you perform these tests, contact AmeriFlow at 602.275.4188 and ask for a specialist to review your options. Water Softener resins will be rendered ineffective in a short period of time when processing iron other than small amounts of "clear water iron." NOTE: Water may contain one or more of the three types of iron and any combination of these. Total iron is the sum of the contents. Capacity to reduce clear water iron is substantiated by industry test data SEDIMENT Sediment is fine, foreign material particles suspended in water. This material is most often clay or silt. Extreme amounts of sediment may give the water a cloudy appearance. A sediment filter installed upstream of the water softener normally corrects this situation. OTHER Other treatments may be required if your water has any of the following issues: Sulfur (rotten egg smell), Low ph, Manganese (Black specks or black stains, metallic tasting water), Chloride (Salty taste, corrosion of metals), Turbidity (Turbid, cloudy, or dirty water), or Sulfate (Bitter; medicinal taste; scaly deposits) Failure to use this product within the described conditions may void the warranty 7

Use and Care A. Type of System Your water softener is a fully automatic demand initiated, metered system. This means the softener meters, or keeps track of the water used in the home. It uses this information to determine when to perform the regeneration, or cleaning cycle. The control of the softening process automatically adjusts to your water use. For example, if you have company and your water use increases substantially, the softener will adjust to insure you don t run out of soft water. B. Type of Salt Basically, salt is salt. However, some makes of salt contain more dirt in the bag than others. We recommend any 99% pure salt commonly found in grocery stores, such as Morton or Diamond Crystal salt pellets. C. Potassium Use Potassium can also be used in the water softener. When Potassium is used however, the softener control valve will need to be adjusted. Add 3 lbs. to the salt amount setting i.e. salt amount = 5.2 lbs. + 3 for potassium = 8.2 lbs. of salt. Also keep the level of potassium in the brine tank low. D. Amount of Salt or Potassium We recommend keeping the level of salt in the brine tank about half full. Let the salt level drop down to the water level before adding more salt. Potassium should be kept as close to the water level as is practical to help prevent a salt bridge. A salt bridge occurs when the salt/potassium forms a crust right at the water level in the brine tank. The salt/potassium remains suspended above the water and cannot make the brine solution required for the regeneration. If you do experience a salt bridge, gently break up the bridge. Wait at least 1 hour, and then manually regenerate the softener. E. Cleaning the Brine Tank Normally it is not necessary to clean the brine tank. In time dirt and silt can build up in the brine tank and if you choose you can clean it out. Let the salt level drop down very low. The night before you clean, manually regenerate the softener. Disconnect the brine line and dump out the old salt, (Do not dump the old salt anywhere near living plants or on concrete). Reconnect the brine line, add about three gallons of water, and add the new salt. F. Changing the Control Valve Settings It is not necessary to change the control valve settings other than the ones described. Over the course of time it is possible the display will not show the correct time of day due to power fluctuations. Reset the control to the correct time of day. If your feed water hardness changes, reset the control to the new hardness. Other settings are programmed at the factory for optimum efficiency and do not need to be changed. G. Resetting the Control After a Power Outage The only correction necessary after a power outage is resetting the time of day. All other settings are retained in the control memory and do not need to be reset. H. Bypassing the Softener You may need to bypass the softener for service or if you do not want your household water to pass through the softener. The instructions are shown on top of the bypass (SourceSelect ) valve. Make sure you depressurize the system before performing any service or removing the softener. I. Vacations or extended periods of non-use It is not necessary to shut down the softener for periods of non-use equal to two-week to one-month vacations. If, however, you are a temporary resident and leave for periods of four to six months, we recommend you shut the softener down. Put the softener in bypass and unplug it. When you return you will need to start the softener up. Make sure there are approximately three gallons of water in the brine tank, plug the softener in, and manually regenerate the softener. 8

Sodium and Potassium in Softened Water The softening process does add some sodium or potassium to the conditioned water. For comparison, two slices of white bread contain approximately 278 milligrams of sodium and two cups of milk contain approximately 226 milligrams of sodium. One large banana contains approximately 600 milligrams of potassium. K. Disinfection of the Water Softener The materials of construction of the modern water conditioner will not support bacterial growth, nor will these materials contaminate a water supply. However, during normal use, a conditioner may become fouled with organic matter, or in some cases with bacteria from the feed water supply. This may result in an off-taste or odor in the water. Therefore, your conditioner may need to be disinfected after installation. Some conditioners will require periodic disinfection during their normal life. Consult your installing dealer for more information on disinfecting your conditioner. Depending upon the conditions of use, the style of conditioner, the type of ion exchanger, and the disinfectant available, a choice can be made among the following methods. 9

Efficiency rated water softeners shall have a rated salt efficiency of not less than 3350 grains of total hardness exchange per pound of salt (based on NaCl equivalency) (477 grams of total hardness exchange per kilogram of salt), and shall not deliver more salt than its listed rating. The efficiency rating is only valid at the factory default salt dosage and maximum service flow rate. Efficiency is measured by a laboratory test described in NSF/ANSI 44. The test represents the maximum possible efficiency that the system can achieve. Operational efficiency is the actual efficiency achieved after the system has been installed It is typically less than the efficiency due to individual application factors including water hardness, water usage, and other contaminants that reduce the softeners capacity. Iron can be in several forms; pretreatment will be necessary if certain types of iron are encountered. Continuous means to a 110 outlet that has continuous voltage not able to be turned off be a light switch. These systems are efficiency rated and conform to NSF/ANSI 44 for the specific performance claims as verified and substantiated by test data. 10

Performance Data Sheet The Krystal Pure softening systems are tested and certified by IAPMO against NSF/ANSI Standard 44 & 372 for softener performance, reduction of barium and radium and low lead content. In addition, the materials and components used in the construction of these systems have been tested to assure that levels of extractable contaminants do not exceed established limits set by NSF/ANSI Standard 44. They also have been evaluated under standard 44 to assure that they are designed and constructed so their intended purpose can be accomplished with installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Important! It is recommended that before purchasing a water treatment unit the water supply is tested to ensure proper treatment processes and equipment are chosen. Provisions should be made to ensure that the system drain line is the shortest possible length; elevation is continuously below the softener control head and that an anti-siphon air gap is maintained between the drain line outlet and discharge to the sanitary sewer line. An efficiency rated water softener is a DIR softener which complies with specific performance specifications intended to minimize the amount of salt and water used in its operation. These softeners shall have a rated salt efficiency of not less than 3350 grains of total hardness exchanged per pound (477 grams per kilogram) of salt (based on NaCl equivalency) and shall not deliver more salt thank its listed rating. The efficiency is valid only at the low salt dosage and is measured by a laboratory test described in NSF/ANSI Standard 44. It is recommended that before purchasing a water treatment unit, you have your water supply tested to determine your actual water treatment needs. Please note that barium and radium are not necessarily in your water and that while testing was performed under standard laboratory conditions, actual performance may vary. The system has been tested according to NSF/ANSI Standard 44 for reduction of barium and radium 226/228 and is based on hardness reduction. Periodic testing of your water with the test kit supplied with this system to verify that hardness and therefore barium and radium 226/228 are being reduced should be done. Typically, there will be a 110-volt outlet within 6 feet of the loop and a ½ drain line stubbed out of the wall. If your home is pre-plumbed, continue to Step 1 of Installation Procedures. CAUTION: Before starting up system, check water softener drain line to insure that it will drain properly. (1/2 minimum) (3/4 or larger) IF YOUR HOME IS NOT PRE-PLUMBED If your home is not pre-plumbed for a water softener, then we recommend calling for a professional installation. The following factors should be considered when choosing the location for your water softener: The distance between the unit and a drain should be as short as possible. Water softener must sit on a firm, fairly level concrete floor or slab. Water softener should be installed close to the water supply inlet, and upstream of all other plumbing connections to entire home. Outside faucets and landscape irrigation should remain on hard water. If it is likely that supplementary water treatment will be required, make certain adequate additional space is available. Since salt must be added periodically to the brine tank, the location should be easily accessible. Do not install any unit closer to a water heater than a total run of 10 feet (3 m) of piping between the outlet of the conditioner and the inlet to the heater. Water heaters can sometimes transmit heat back down the cold pipe into the unit control valve. Hot water can severely damage the conditioner. A 10 foot (3 m) total pipe run, including bends, elbows, etc. is a reasonable distance to prevent this possibility. A positive way to prevent hot water flowing from heat source to the conditioner, in the event of a negative pressure situation, is to install a check valve in the soft water piping from the conditioner. If a check valve is installed, make certain the water heating unit is equipped with a properly rated temperature and pressure safety relief valve. Also, be certain that local codes are not violated. Do not locate unit where it or its connections will ever be subjected to room temperatures under 40 º F or over 125 º F Do not install near acid or acid fumes Diagrams are for illustrative purposes only; they are not drawn to scale. 12

Installation Procedures KS 10 CONNECT TO WATER SUPPLY A. Shut off the main water supply to the house. 1. Open the hose bib to relieve pressure and drain out water. 2. Close the hose bib. 3. Place a bucket or the softener brine tank under the softener loop to catch the excess water that will spill out when you cut the pipe. 4. Cut the plumbing loop off. 5. Determine the inlet side of the loop by turning the main water on very slightly until water comes out of one of the sides of the loop. This is the inlet supply. WARNING: You must connect the incoming side of the softener/conditioner to the inlet supply from the loop. Failure to connect with the proper directional flow can damage the water softener/conditioner and your household plumbing. B. Prepare KS10 SourceSelect bypass valve for piping connections. 1. Apply O-rings (3-required and included) to tank meter adapter. Lubricate with silicone (provided). 2. Slip bypass (SourceSelect ) valve into position over O-rings. 3. Connect bypass (SourceSelect ) valve to meter adapter using (4) nuts and bolts (provided). 4. Install drain hose barb. Use Teflon tape on threads. Hose barb can point up or down. 5. Insert tailpieces through union nuts. 6. Attach tailpieces by soldering to the inlet and outlet of the plumbing loop. 7. Place rubber gaskets into the union nuts and thread onto the bypass (SourceSelect ) valve body. It is not necessary to use lubricant or sealant on rubber gasket or union nuts. 8. Place SourceSelect valve into the bypass position by rotating the handles so they are both perpendicular to the flow path of the inlet and outlet water stream. CONNECT TO DRAIN Typical drain line runs to a floor drain, washing machine drain, sanitary sewer line with a p-trap, a sink drain or a sump. CAUTION: Check with all local plumbing codes to insure proper installation in your area. An air-gap may be required. Be sure to install proper drain line size (see specifications or step B below for sizing). A. Slide a ½ I.D. tube onto hose barb located on the back of the valve control body, (secure tube with a hose clamp, provided). Connect the tubing to the drain stub out provided with your pre-plumb loop. Some preplumbs may provide an ABS drainpipe to run drain line to. CAUTION: Be sure drain line discharges properly into a drain to prevent flooding. Make sure to secure drain line using hose clamp. B. If the following conditions exist, it is recommended to increase the drain line tubing from ½ to ¾ diameter: Drain line run is over 20. Drain line vertical run is over 10 feet high with incoming water supply pressure of 60 PSI. (You can increase or decrease height of run 2 feet per 10 PSI. variations in either direction, i.e. 12 feet vertical run with 70 PSI. or 8 feet vertical run with 50 PSI.). Backwash rates exceed 5 gpm (see specifications sheet). 14

Installation Procedures KS10 Continued CONNECT BRINE LINE A. Brine Line Connection 1. Install 3/8 brine nut elbow on aircheck assembly make sure to add teflon tape to threads 2. As shown in figure 1-5, Slide brine nut onto the 3/8 brine tubing. Make sure 3/8 tube has insert inside tubing. B. Brine Tank Installation 1. Remove cap from brine well. Remove overflow nut and float. 2. Secure brine well to brine tank with the brine well stand-off and nut using the lower hole. Refer to Figure 1-7. 3. Replace brine float into brine well. 4. Insert brine line tubing through the upper hole of tank, stand-off and well. Refer to Figure 1-6. 5. Thread the brine line through the well stand-off and push brine line into the quick connect elbow at the top of the float assembly. 6. Replace brine well cap. Installation Procedures KS10 Continued SYSTEM START-UP IMPORTANT: The following steps will require turning the indicator knob to various positions. A flathead screwdriver may be used to assist in rotating the knob. Push the indicator knob in while manually rotating the camshaft located behind the controller by hand (COUNTERCLOCKWISE) until indicator knob points to the desired position. KS10 CONTROLLER A. Remove valve cover by releasing the plastic clip from the back and lifting the cover up and forward. B. Rotate indicator knob to the BACKWASH position (COUNTERCLOCKWISE). C. Fill the softener/conditioner tank with water. 1. With house water supply off, open the SourceSelect bypass valve. 2. Open water supply valve very slowly to approximately ¼ open position. D. When all of the air has been purged from the tank (water begins to flow steadily from the drain), open the main water supply all the way. Allow water to run to drain until clear. E. Turn off water supply and let the unit stand for about five minutes to allow all trapped air to escape from the tank. F. Add the initial amount of water to the brine tank manually with a bucket or a hose. Add approximately 3 gallons of water to the brine tank. G. Slowly turn the water supply valve completely open. Place the conditioner into operation by turning the indicator knob COUNTERCLOCKWISE to the BRINE/SLOW RINSE position. H. With conditioner in this position, observe the water level in the brine tank for several minutes to check that the level is going down. If water level does not recede, then make sure the brine line fittings are tight and no air can leak into connections. I. Advance the indicator knob to the FAST RINSE/REFILL position. Let conditioner run in this position for a minute or so. J. Advance the indicator knob to just past the FAST RINSE/REFILL position but NOT all the way to the CONDITIONED WATER position. Run water from a nearby faucet until the water is clear. CONNECT ELECTRICAL Plug transformer into a 110 VAC outlet that is NOT controlled by a wall switch. Connect the plug of the transformer into the Transformer Plug Receptacle located at the bottom of the control housing. 16

Installation Procedures KS10 Continued PROGRAM THE VALVE CONTROL Time of Day Setting Open the access door to access the jumper settings. The jumper should be on the TIME jumper. Set the time of day to the nearest hour by pressing the black TIME SET button. PM hours are indicated by a light next to the letters PM on the display window. NOTE: The unit is factory-set to regenerate at 2:00a.m. If you prefer to have the unit regenerate at an earlier or later time, simply set the current time of day accordingly (e.g., to have the unit regenerate at 4:00a.m. two hours later - set the clock two hours earlier than the actual time of day. If it is actually 2:00 p.m., set the time to 12:00 p.m.). Make sure the Timer Locking Pin is always in the horizontal position during operation. Hardness Setting Move the jumper to the pins next to the word HARDNESS. Press the black TIME SET button until the hardness of the incoming water supply is displayed. NOTE: The factory default is 18 GPG (Grains Per Gallon). It is a good idea to set your hardness a few grains higher than your actual hardness because hardness can vary throughout the year. Check with your local water supply company or municipality to find out the hardness in your area. Capacity Setting It is NOT necessary to change the capacity setting on your softener/conditioner. It is set at the factory and determined by the size of the system and the amount of salt used to regenerate the media bed. NOTE: The settings are designed for optimum efficiencies and do not need to be changed. If Potassium is used to regenerate the conditioner. It is recommended to increase the salt dosage by 3 more pounds. Also, keep the level of potassium low in the brine tank to prevent bridging. To adjust the salt dosage, locate the salt dosage setting on the right side of the valve control, insert a small screwdriver into the white indicator knob and move the pointer to the proper salt setting. NOTE: Put the jumper back on the TIME pins. The jumper must not be left on any pins other than the top pins next to the word TIME. Calendar Override (Optional) The factory setting is 15 days. If you would like a different calendar override or none at all, follow the steps below. 1. Disconnect power. 2. Place jumper on Pin A and reconnect power. 3. Move jumper to Pin B. 4. Press the TIME SET button and hold down. The numbers will scroll from 0 to 15 days. Release the button when number of days desired for the calendar override appears. 5. Disconnect power. 6. Place jumper back on TIME pins and reconnect power. Manual Regeneration/Extra Cycle In the case of power failure, the control can be manually regenerated. Depress the indicator knob and turn the camshaft to the proper cycle. The following cycle times should be used for proper regeneration: BACKWASH 14 minutes. BRINE/SLOW RINSE 52 minutes. FAST RINSE/REFILL 10 minutes. Return indicator knob to the CONDITIONED WATER position. For an Extra Cycle, simply push in the indicator knob. It will take a few minutes for regeneration to start. KS10 Troubleshooting The technology upon which the Krystal Pure control valve is based is well established and proven in service over many years. However, should a problem or question arise regarding the operation of this system, the control can very easily be serviced. For parts mentioned, refer to exploded views in the Replacement Parts section of this manual. Important: Service procedures that require the water pressure to be removed from the system are marked with an! after the possible cause. To remove water pressure from the system, put the SourceSelect bypass valve or three-valve bypass into the bypass position and open the backwash drain valve (the seventh valve back from the control) with a screwdriver. Connect the tubing to the drain stub out provided with your pre-plumb loop. (See Figure 1-5.) Some preplumbs may provide an ABS drainpipe to run drain line to. CAUTION: Be sure drain line discharges properly into a drain to prevent flooding. An air gap is required between the drain line and the drain (sewer). Installation Procedures KS15 & KS64 Continued SYSTEM START-UP Before running the KS15 & KS64 for the first time, flush out the water line and bypass (SourceSelect Valve). Be sure the bypass (SourceSelect Valve) is closed. Insert meter cable in the outlet side of the bypass (SourceSelect Valve) or connector; the side the turbine is installed in. Plug in the power cord for the valve. Turn the water source on at the inlet to the house. Open a water line and let water flow until water runs clear. Open the bypass (SourceSelect Valve). Check for any leaks. Press and hold both and buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to unlock the key pad. Press to advance through each cycle backwash, B. S. R. (brine & slow rinse) - verify the air check valve is closed by listening to be sure no air is being drawn into the system, secondary backwash, and fast rinse until you reach secondary backwash; this lets air out of the drain line and will take 8-10 minutes to purge the system. Note: when you press the screen will display motor running as it positions the ceramic disc. Once motor running disappears and the next phase is displayed, press to advance to the next phase. Next to fill the brine tank with water press to manually advance through the next phase, fast rinse, until you reach B.R. (brine refill). Once you reach B.R. (brine refill) allow this phase to run, do not advance past this phase. This will automatically fill the brine tank with the correct amount of water. This phase will take 10 minutes for a 1 cu/ft. system. After this phase has completed, it will advance to the in-service position. Next add salt into brine tank. (40lb minimum, 120lb maximum) Note: We recommend using pellet salt, NOT solar salt. Install brine tank cover. Turn a faucet on, away from the installation location, until the water from the plumbing lines has been purged. Softening system is now fully operational. Take a water sample to verify and test for hardness reduction. 33

Installation Procedures KS15 & KS64 Continued PROGRAM THE VALVE CONTROL One Button to Change the Current Time Pressing and holding the button for 3 seconds, when system is locked, allows the current time of day to be adjusted. Scroll up arrow or down to set the hour then press and then same for minutes. When time settings are completed press Manual / Delayed Regeneration Pressing at any time results in an immediate manual regeneration. Pressing and holding for 3 seconds, when system is locked, results in a delayed regeneration at 2 am. Unlocking the Keypad icon indicates the buttons are locked within 5 minutes of idle use. To unlock press and hold for 3 seconds until the icon is off. and Enter Key Press button to enter the basic programming mode, modify highlighted options, and return to the main menu. Manual Regen/Esc. Key Press at any phase during manual regeneration to advance to the next phase or press during programming to exit to the home screen without modifying the current highlighted option. Up and Down Arrows or buttons are used to scroll through the various basic programming options as well as adjust values. Programming Modes Basic Programming Allows you to adjust the time values for each phase. To enter basic programming, follow the directions below. When the icon is on, press and hold both and for 3 seconds to unlock the keypad; then press to enter the main menu; press or to highlight each option. Press to enter that option.
