Indirect waste piping requirements Definition: indirect waste piping refers to drain piping which connects indirectly with the drain system as per Comm 81.01 (131 ). It should be noted that indirect waste piping connects directly to the fixture/appliance which is being drained. Size: the size of the indirect waste pipe when more than 30" in length is sized using Table 82.30-1 & Table 82.30-2. If the indirect waste pipe is 30 inches or less in length, it is permitted to be the same size as the drain connection on the fixture as per Comm 82.33 (3) (a) & (b). Trap required: gravity flow indirect waste piping more than 30" in length shall be provided with a trap as per Comm 82.33 (5) (a); when the piping is 30" or less, a trap is not required. A trap is required regardless of length if draining a refrigerated food storage room or compartment. Approved material: indirect waste piping more than 30" in length shall be approved materials as per Comm 84. Maximum length: indirect waste piping shall not be longer than 30' horizontally or 15' vertically as per Comm 82.33 (6). Approved Receptors - Waste Sinks & Sinks Receptor: "means a fixture or device that receives the discharge from indirect or local waste piping." See Comm 81.01 (201 ). Comm 82.33 (8) requires a receptor to be of a shape & capacity as to prevent spashing or flooding. The receptor must be sized for the maximum discharge from all indirect & local waste pipes discharging into the receptor. Waste sink: "means a receptor for the discharge from indirect or local waste piping installed with its flood level rim above the surrounding floor." See Comm 81.01 (275). Comm 82.33 (8) (a) requires a waste sink serving as a receptor to be installed with its rim one inch above the floor.. Note: A plumbing fixture may not be used as a receptor for indirect or local waste piping. Waste Sink Min 1" _L /abv floor A waste sink shall have its rim at least one inch above the floor. See Comm 82.33 (8) (a). A mop sink without a faucet above may be used as a waste sink. A mop sink with a faucet above is not permitted to be used as a receptor for indirect waste piping. sink: "means a receptor for the discharge from indirect or local waste piping installed with its flood level rim even with the surrounding floor." See Comm 81.01 (105). Comm 82.33 (8) (b) requires a floor sink to be equipped with a removable metal basket or a dome strainer. Indirect waste piping or local waste piping shall not discharge through a traffic grate, but shall terminate over an ungrated portion of the floor sink. If a receptor has a 1 1/4" outlet diameter, the minimum trap size required to serve the receptor is 1 1/4" and the drainage fixture unit load assigned to the 1 1/4" receptor is 1 dfu. If a receptor has a 4" outlet diameter, the minimum trap size required is 4" and the dfu load assigned to the 4" receptor is 6. sinks are available in a variety of sizes. Watts FS-730 floor sink measures 12" x 12" x 6" deep. Watts FS-850 is 16" x 16" x 12" deep. The FS-730 is available with a 2", 3" or4" drain outlet connection. In applying Table 82.30-1 the size of a floor sink receptor is determined by the size of the outlet connection, not the size of the floor sink itself. If Watts FS-730 (12" x 12" x 6") is used with 2" drain outlet, a minimum 2" trap & 2" fixture drain are required. The drain load assigned to the 2" receptor is three dfu. If the Watts FS-730 is used with a 4" drain outlet, a 4" trap is required & assigned a drain load of 6 drainage fixture units. 88

Approved Receptors - Standpipes Standpipe: "means a drain pipe serving as a receptor for the discharge wastes from indirect or local waste piping." See Comm 81.01 (235). Comm 82.33 (8) (a) reqires a standpipe serving as a receptor to be installed with its rim one inch above the floor. Minimum~.. See Comm 82.33(8) (a). Receptor size & Capacity: DFU capacity and trap sizes are listed in Table 82.30-1. Receptor size: shall be large enough and shall be of a shape to prevent splashing or flooding. See Comm 82.33 (8). Size of Receptor (standpipes): Table 82.30-1 refers to receptors of indirect wastes (gravity flow discharge). If a 1 1/4" standpipe receptor is used, the minimum trap size required to serve the receptor is 1 1/4" and the drainage fixture unit load assigned to the 1 1/4" receptor is 1 dfu. If a 4" standpipe receptor is used, the minimum trap size required is 4" and the dfu load assigned to the 4" standpipe receptor is 6. Standpipes must be sized for the maximum discharge of all indirect and local waste piping discharging into the standpipe. To facilitate the discharge from multiple indirect waste pipes, an increaser is often installed in the standpipe. In the lower left example below, a 3" x 6" increaser is installed. In applying Table 82.30-1 the size of a standpipe receptor is determined by the size of the standpipe outlet(3"), not the increaser(6"). If a 6" standpipe receptor size were required to receive the anticipated flow, a 6" trap & fixture drain would be required and a reduction in size would not be permitted. Sizing Receptors(Gravity Flow- Intermittent Flow) Identifying receptor size: The size of a floor sink receptor, waste sink receptor and standpipe receptors is identified by the size of the drain outlet connection chosen. A floor sink or waste sink with a 3 inch outlet is considered a 3" receptor & listed as 4 dfu (Table 82.30-1 ). A floor sink or waste sink with a 2 inch drain outlet is considere.d a 2" receptor & listed as 3 dfu. Selecting an adequate size for receptors: Table 82.30-1 lists the minimum trap size and dfu for commonly used fixtures and appliances. For an ice chest, the minimum size trap and fixture drain is listed as 1 1/2"; for a food prep sink the minimum size trap and fixture drain is 2". When selecting a receptor to receive the indirect waste from a single fixture/appliance, the minimum size permitted must be at least the minimum trap size listed in Table 82.30-1. An ice chest requires a minimum 1 1/2" diameter receptor. The minimum size receptor for a food prep sink is 2". Discharge from multiple fixtures: All receptors must have sufficient capacity to prevent splashing or flooding. The combined dfu load of all fixtures and/or appliances involved must be used to select the proper size receptor. Table 82.30-2 may be used as criteria for selecting the receptor size. The horizontal portion of the receptor's fixture drain would be limited by the capacity identified for "horizontal drain piping". As an example, a total discharge of 8 dfu would require a 3" diameter receptor, 3" trap & 3" fixture drain (Table 82.30-2 limits 1 1/2" horizontal drains to a maximum of 3 dfu, limits a 2" drain to 6 dfu and a 3" drain to a maximum of 20 dfu). fr2 dfu appliance 1 dfu fixture~ ~fu appliance... Sizing Receptors Another option for selecting the size of a receptor is provided in the appendix of chapter Comm 82. A-82.30 (4)- 2. Receptor Design. A table is given that lists the gpm & dfu that can be expected to readily flow through a given size trap with a specified height. Using this table, a total of 8 dfu discharging into a receptor would require a 4" trap & fixture drain. Sizing Receptors & Related Piping Receptors of indirect waste, pressurized discharge: The load on drain piping downstream from a receptor serving fixtures/appliances with pressurized waste is determined by the dfu value of the fixtures/appliances discharging into the receptor. For example, a standpipe receptor for a residential clothes washer is required to be a minimum 2" diameter. The residential clothes washer is assigned a dfu value of 4. The load on the drain & vent piping downstream of the 2" standpipe receptor is 4. The dfu of a 2" receptor identified in Table 82.30-1 is not used to determine the size or load on drain & vent piping associated with the residential clothes washer. 2" standpipe receptor 2"/4 dfu 12 dfu I 3" horizontal piping hoirzontal piping B 14

1. Question: 2. Question: 3. Question: 4. Question: 5. Question: 6. Question: 7. Question: 8. Question: 9. Question: Chapter B Questions & Answers May any fixture/appliance utilize indirect or local waste piping? No. Comm 82.32 (5) requires all plumbing fixtures or appliances discharging wastes to connect directly to a drain system. The exception to that rule involves fixtures & appliances having a public health concern, which are required to discharge their wastes by means of an air-gap or air break to a drain system. Refer to Table 82.33-1 for a list of fixtures/appliances that are a public health concern. What is an indirect waste pipe? It is a pipe that connects directly to a fixture or an appliance and does not connect directly to the drainage system. What type of connection is made to the drainage system with an indirect waste pipe? It is either an air-gap or air-break connection depending on the fixture being discharged. How is the minimum size of an indirect waste determined? It is usually determined by the opening or tapping on the fixture or appliance if it is 30" or less. If it is over 30" long, then Table 82.30-1 shall be used to determine the correct size. What are examples of sizes of indirect waste pipes? A 3/8" indirect waste for a coffee brewer or a 2" indirect waste for a dump type dishwasher are some examples. There are various sizes scattered somewhere in between the above sizes but also sizes that may be smaller or larger. What is a local waste? It is a pipe which receives the discharge from indirect waste piping. A local waste does not connect directly to the drainage system but does discharge to the drainage system through an air-break or an air-gap. What type of connection is made between an indirect waste pipe discharging into a local waste pipe? The connection may be an air-gap or an air-break. If the connection between the indirect waste pipe and the local waste pipe is by means of an air-gap, the connection to the drainage system may be by means of an air break or air-gap. What is the maximum length of an indirect waste pipe? The maximum length of an indirect waste pipe which is not trapped is 30" measured both horizontally and vertically. What is the maximum length of an indirect waste pipe which is trapped? The maximum length is 30' horizontally and 15' vertically. B 21

10. Question: 11. Question: 12. Question: 13. Question: 14. Question: 15. Question: 16. Question: 17. Question: Chapter B Questions & Answers Does a pan with a drain outlet installed under a water heater have a drainage fixture unit? How is it connected? A water heater "pan" installed for the purpose of minor leakage from the water heater is not considered a receptor. If the discharge pipe from a T&P valve discharges to the "pan", the drain piping from the "pan" is considered local waste piping and the "pan" is considered a "receptor". The pan would then need to meet all the requirements of an approved receptor (material, etc.), and the minimum size local waste permitted is 1 1/4". For dfu values see question #17. Some bar sinks have a 1" basket strainer. If the indirect waste pipe is 30" or less in developed length, what size must the indirect waste pipe be? Indirect waste piping 30" or less in length is permitted to be the size of the strainer. Some bar sinks have a 1" basket strainer. If the developed length of the indirect waste piping is over 30 inches, the indirect waste piping is required to be 1 1/2" in diameter. Where should the increase from 1" to 1-1/2" be made? The increase from 1" to 1-1/2" should be made immediately under the 1" strainer. Does a drain from a glass washer installed in a bar need to discharge through a grease interceptor? No! A glass washer in a bar does not need to discharge through a grease interceptor provided that greasy dishes are not being washed in the appliance. When are grease interceptors required in a bar which serves food? If the food is served on paper plates or in baskets and the spatula is only used for frying food, a grease interceptor is not required. For fixtures & appliances discharging by means of indirect waste piping, must each compartment be separately trapped? No, compartments of a combination plumbing fixture are permitted to be installed on one trap as long as the requirements of Comm 82.32 (3) (a) are met. What is the difference between a waste sink & a floor sink? In some instances, a waste sink is the same product as a floor sink but simply installed a minimum 1" above the surrounding floor area. How should local waste serving a T&P relief valve be sized? The size receptor chosen dictates the dfu value for sizing local waste piping. Table 82.30-1 identifies a 1 1/4" receptor is 1 dfu, a 1 1/2" receptor is 2 dfu. 822
