NZQF NQ Ref 0540 Version 5 Page 2 of 8 National Certificate in Fire and Rescue Services (Vegetation) (Level 3) Level 3 Credits 55 Purpose This qualification is designed for people working in, or intending to work in, vegetation fire prevention and fire fighting in the position of crew leader, either in paid employment or as a volunteer. This is the second of five national certificates developed for vegetation fire and rescue fire fighters, commencing at level 2, progressing on through levels 3, 4, 5, and 6, and complementing the National Diploma in Fire and Rescue Services (Vegetation Fire Fighting Management) (Level 5) [Ref: 0780]. This qualification has credits in common with the National Certificate in Fire and Rescue Services (Vegetation) (Level 2) [Ref: 0539] and is a prerequisite to the National Certificate in Fire and Rescue Services (Vegetation) (Level 4) [Ref: 1183]. Credit gained for the skills and knowledge recognised by this qualification can be used as a basis for some of the requirements of the higher-level vegetation qualifications. This qualification covers a range of knowledge and skills specific to vegetation fire prevention and fire fighting, and broader subjects of communication, safety, and team management. The compulsory section contains standards covering fire safety and control, operation and knowledge of fires and fire fighting equipment related to vegetation fires, working with aircraft at emergencies, knowledge of fire behaviour, as well as personal safety and first aid standards. The elective sets provide flexibility to the qualification, offering a choice of standards from within sectors that have relevance to the industry, and also provide opportunities for people progressing within the fire fighting industry to select standards from anywhere on the National Qualifications Framework. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard. Changes to structure and content standard 17279 has decreased from 4 to 2 credits standard 497 has increased from 1 to 3 credits. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. People currently working towards version 3 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to this version of the qualification. For the purposes of this qualification, credit awarded in the following domains will be accepted as meeting the qualification requirements. NZQF NQ Ref 0540 Version 5 Page 6 of 8 Previous versions of the qualification Version 3 was issued following a comprehensive review of standards and qualifications for the vegetation fire prevention and fire fighting sector. The credit total of the qualification was reduced from 60 to 55 credits; standards 3268, 3278, and 4647 were removed from the qualification; standards 17279, 17593, 20386, and 20388 were added to the qualification; and specified subfields and domains in set B were expanded to include credits from anywhere on the NZQF. Credits for standards in Fighting > Fire Fighting Vegetation Fighting > Fire Fighting Skills Count towards qualification requirements where the following is specified and Services Vegetation and Services Generic Fire Fighting Version 2 was issued following standard reviews. Changes to structure and content at that time included: Community and Workplace Fire and Emergency Management subfield and domains were added to the elective section; standard 4647 was updated (removed in version 3); Core Health standards were updated; and transition arrangements were included for people with credit for Fire Fighting and Outdoor Equipment standards. Other standard setting bodies whose standards are included in the qualification New Zealand Industry Training NZQA Sports, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Certification This certificate will display the logos of NZQA, the Fire and Rescue Services Industry Training and the organisation that has been granted consent to assess against standards that meet the requirements of the qualification (accredited).
