1 AFTER 398 OLD QUARRY WAY, BOISE, ID 83709 Key changes made: We removed the wall that separated the kitchen and living room, and remodeled the kitchen and hall bath. We installed a custom-made iron railing and bar supports, installed hardwood flooring through the kitchen, living room and dining spaces. Challenges: The client had clear goals of what he wanted the remodel to achieve but wasn t sure of the design details and finishes he wanted, nor what the overall look should be like. Overcoming the challenges: The designer approached the finish selection from the client s point of view, showing him materials and styles that would work well for a young bachelor s taste but that would still be comfortable as his life changes over time. BEFORE Pleased client: With the amount of space in his new kitchen/great room, he and his friends can now congregate in the same, bright inviting space instead of trying to socialize in dark, cramped rooms. We are especially proud of: The fact that we met our client s goals of a well-designed open space that fits his current lifestyle and can accommodate whatever the future has in store! AFTER 2 3703 W BARR ST BOISE 83703 Key Changes made: The kitchen was cramped and separated from the rest of the home. It was not functional, had very little storage, poor flooring and a walkway went right through it. The house had just one bathroom. Challenges: Opening up the kitchen and hiding the support structure of a bearing wall, and changing a laundry room into a combination laundry/bathroom. Overcoming the challenges: We approached each problem as a team, using creativity and good oldfashioned carpentry skills! BEFORE Pleased client: The clients really appreciated the redesigned floor plan which gave them an open kitchen with an amazing use of space. They also loved the concrete countertops. They were pleased with the curbless, barrier-free shower in the laundry room and how much space they now have. We are especially proud of: The fact that we recessed the refrigerator to make it counter depth and the hidden support structure of the beams that we elevated into the ceiling. We also like the way we created a shower that feels large in such a small space. AFTER 3 1708 N. 22 ST., BOISE, ID 83702 Key changes made: The extensive remodel created a new floor plan on the 2nd floor of the residence including a new master bedroom, master bath, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen was demolished and remodeled, and a mud room and pool bath added. The 2nd phase of the project includes a new office space and a second master bath in the basement. Challenges: The original second story had multiple stepdowns and level changes created during a previous remodel. During the design phase, we determined the floor needed to be raised to accommodate the owners needs. Overcoming the challenges: We demolished and rebuilt the second-story floor over the garage living BEFORE space to match the remaining floor. That change allowed TBL to design and create a spacious living space on the second floor. Pleased client: From the owners: It s nearly impossible to pick any one thing overall. More of an overall sense of happiness and satisfaction that we will have accomplished everything we hoped for in terms of how functional it is and just how much it makes sense, how beautiful it has turned out, all while maintaining the character and soul of the house. We are especially proud of: The comfortable living space resulting from the second-story remodel. The entire remodel flows from one end to the other while keeping the feel of the old historic residence. 4 AFTER 1301 N. 20TH ST., BOISE, ID 83702 Key changes made: Without changing the footprint of the house, we eliminated a hallway to enlarge the new kitchen and master bath; replaced the spiral stairs with a new stairway system; opened up the front entryway with a view into the living room while adding two closets in the entryway; remodeled both bathrooms; created a walk-in closet in the master bedroom; created a laundry room and installed new flooring and front door. Challenges: Designing and constructing a new stairway that functionally connects all three levels of the home, but that is aesthetically integrated with the style of the space. BEFORE Overcoming the challenges: We added a more traditional stairway that seamlessly connects to the existing catwalk on the second floor, and now provides a purposeful and beautiful anchor to the home. Pleased client: The clients were pleased that we preserved the historic integrity of the home while also providing modern amenities. We are especially proud of: We created a far more functional and cohesive design without adding any square footage or altering the exterior footprint of the home. 5 AFTER 2011 N. STONEVIEW PLACE, BOISE, IDAHO 83702 Key changes made: The Stronghold Team transformed this 1990s home with innovative details and modern day style. Changes included a full kitchen remodel with new layout and finishes, a new master bath with new layout and finishes, new stair railings and a two-story Trex deck. Challenges: The existing angles in the home as well as a post in the middle of the kitchen! BEFORE Overcoming the challenges: We redesigned the spaces and removed the angles and post to create a more functional space and better flow. We are especially proud of: The transformation of the kitchen and family room and the increased functionality in what was a very small and limited kitchen. 6 AFTER 1187 E KIMBERLY LANE, BOISE, ID 83712 Key changes made: A whole house remodel with a focus on the kitchen space. We removed the laundry function from the main level and moved it to the master closet upstairs. Utilizing this area allowed us to capture the space for the kitchen, pantry and powder room. The resulting kitchen opens up to the main level and allows for ample use of windows to capture the view of the Boise River and the Greenbelt. Challenges: Accommodating a functioning and spacious gourmet kitchen without the need for upper cabinetry. BEFORE Overcoming the challenges: With some thought to the function of the kitchen, we were able to accommodate the plates, glasses, and utensils in all of the heavy duty lower drawers with the use of dividers and special plate holders. Pleased client: The client is pleased with everything! It all works just as she had hoped. We are especially proud of: overall transformation of the space. It is stunning and functional. 7 AFTER 2332 RIDGEPOINT, BOISE, ID 83712 Key changes made: This project was a whole home renovation. The main living area was opened up by removing the wall that separated the kitchen from the living area. We increased the size of the rear windows to spotlight the view and allow for more light. The main living area ceiling was raised to create an expansive, custom vaulted ceiling. Two bedrooms and a bathroom became the Master Suite. The obstructive pony wall enclosing the staircase was removed and a wrought iron handrail replaced it. Challenges: This improvement was a large-scale project and for that reason was challenging. It is important to us to do the project right while not inconveniencing clients more than necessary. BEFORE Overcoming the challenges: We have a great staff that understands restrictive budgets. Many times we are able to find materials that achieve the desired look while not breaking the bank. Pleased client: Our clients on this project are most pleased about how the remodel created a new more open home. We are especially proud of: The end product exceeded our clients expectations. The design done for these clients captured the feeling they had wished for in their home. Challenges: Designing the remodel the client envisioned within a specified budget. Overcoming the challenges: Our interior designer worked with our client to select the right materials within the set budget. JDI s communication with our designer was key to managing the budget and ensured the design process moved forward efficiently.
