Lindemann Scrap Baling Presses Always a Step Ahead Our scrap baling presses have an excellent reputation in scrap yards, car body plants, aluminum processing plants and non-ferrous metal remelting works. They compact melted iron, sheet metal and wire scrap into square edged bales a preferred feed material for steel mills, foundries and remelting plants. It has been a long way from the launch of the first Lindemann hydraulically operated scrap baler at the beginning of the 1920s to today s new Lindemann RAS scrap baler series. Our comprehensive know-how, combined with advance in-depth studies of user industries requirement, led to a new baler generation, which sets standards for efficient scrap processing. With the new triple, double and single-acting sheartype balers of the Lindemann RAS series our engineers have not only achieved but surpassed the pre-determined aims with regard to operating reliability, flexibility and operating costs. 2

Fast and efficient Single-acting scrap baler RAS I Double-acting scrap baler RAS II Our special drive and control concepts make for high throughput capacity and favorable energy consumption. Combined measures have helped to reduce cycle times in the new hydraulic system by up to 50 percent without increasing the power supply. The Lindemann RAS series is the first generation of scrap balers to operate with a peak hydraulic pressure of 350 bars. This means that smaller cylinders can be used with the same pressure forces and smaller cylinders mean less oil to move. Because fewer than 10 percent of all cylinder movements happen in the highpressure range, 90 percent of the working movements can be made at the same drive power but at much higher speeds. By means of our special oil transfer system, the oil returning from one cylinder can be used directly to speed up the advance of another cylinder working under low load conditions. In addition, hydraulic oil flow splitting makes it possible to feed oil to several cylinders at the same time. Both features further reduce cycle times. Thanks to the new infinitely variable positioning system integrated in all cylinders, trouble with limit and proximity switches due to dirt and falling scrap is now a thing of the past. The new positioning system also means that, for the first time ever, piston position, speed and acceleration can be determined along the entire travel distance. This makes it possible to control the optimum hydraulic switch positions and speed up the bale cycle. Triple-acting scrap baler RAS III 6

Features & Benefits A further innovation for scrap processing machines is WearCon patent pending, the optional automatic wear monitoring system. It signals automatically and well in advance when it is time for a wear plate to be replaced.wear indicators installed in exposed positions in the press transmit the required information via an electric signal to the multi-information terminal of the press. Plant operators can thus plan their procurement of spare parts and replacements more effectively and without any urgency. Compact and attached Rigidity calculations with the aid of the Infinite Element Method (FEM) have resulted in highly compact, spacesaving designs. The idea of space-saving installation particularly important to the automotive industry was also a consistent factor in the design and arrangement of hydraulic and drive aggregates. Extensive pre-assembly of the balers at the factory including the attachment of hydraulic blocks and the pipelines leading from these to the cylinders has helped to achieve shorter installation times and improved commissioning conditions. Integrated and visualized Our multi-information terminal provides easy operation and quick and easy troubleshooting when necessary. Graphics display, process data visualization and online help in the desired language are state-of-theart. Bale length and pressing force of the RAS series are selectable at the multi-information terminal for flexible adjustment to different logistics requirements. And a combination of the computer-operated control system with an additional weighing system makes bales of uniform length with maximum density possible. Display and processing of baler operating data, production figures and status figures is also possible on decentralized computers. To ensure that help and economical support are always available, our remote diagnosis and software updates via teleservice are available as an option. Protected and reliable The comprehensive wear protection of the Lindemann scrap balers extends operating periods and minimizes time-consuming maintenance and repair work. Furthermore, our design solutions of the RAS series help when exchanging wear parts and avoid the laborintensive dismantling of complete compression units. PLC controlled central lubrication of all RAS baler guides reduces wear and ensures trouble-free operation. The special washboard profile of the RAS balers wear plates helps prevent the dreaded "plate jam" caused by thin pieces of metal and off cuts and the resulting expensive operational interruptions. Extra long parallel guides assure low friction and smooth running strokes of the compression units. The long guides and adjustable stops of the compression units ensure also that the pressure platen reaches the correct end position even in the event of wear and tear. 8

Features & Benefits Dynamic and smooth The infinitely variable measuring system is the only one that facilitates dynamic monitoring of the oil level, which offers operational safety and environmental advantages, as even the lowest oil losses are recognized and indicated. Thanks to computer simulations of the hydraulic logic control, our new hydrologic valve blocks ensure faster but smoother working cycles. And last, but by no means least, optional energy efficiency circuit and electric peak load control enable the energy-conscious user to further reduce power consumption and operating costs. Metso Minerals is oriented to efficient cost-benefit ratios in all areas. Thus, in Lindemann RAS scrap baling presses, the pressure forces, for example, are set with reference both to the specific surface pressure required and to the criterion of economic justifiability.
