PRESS IMAGES 1. Lincoln s unique hilltop situation has given rise to an iconic townscape, crowned by the historic Castle and Cathedral 2. The historic relationship between church and state power is vividly illustrated by the visual interplay between the Cathedral and the Castle, which together dominate the Lincoln skyline. 3. At the heart of Lincoln, the Brayford Pool is a historic confluence of rivers. Since Roman times it has been a hub for trade and travel 4. Looking away from the hillside Lincoln stretches into the surrounding lowlands, a striking difference in character to the elevated historic city The J. Paul Getty Trust Communications Department 1200 Getty Center Drive, Suite 403 Tel: 310 440 7360 Los Angeles, CA 90049-1681 Fax 310 440 7722 www.getty.edu

5. Steep Hill is perhaps Lincoln s most beautiful street, with the highest concentration of historic buildings anywhere in the city. 6. Greyfriars is one of Lincoln s many surviving medieval buildings. 7. The Brayford Pool is at the heart of Lincoln s growth and regeneration, including the ongoing development of the University of Lincoln 8. New development in Lincoln must often contend with buried archaeological remains of national significance, such as this Roman cemetery.

9. The elevated position of uphill Lincoln led to the construction of many windmills, of which the Grade II listed Ellis Mill is the sole survivor 10. Lincoln s Guildhall dates from 1592, and is the location of Lincoln s most important civic functions. It is situated above the entrance to the historic city, where there has been a fortified gateway since the Roman period. 11. Lincoln s Guildhall dates from 1592, and is the location of Lincoln s most important civic functions. It is situated above the entrance to the historic city, where there has been a fortified gateway since the Roman period. 12. Seen here from the east, Lincoln Cathedral is a key part of the landscape, visible for many miles around.

13. The sheer size and elevation of the cathedral leads to opportunities for it to be glimpsed throughout the city, making it a familiar backdrop for residents. 14. Lincoln s riverside has been a constant feature of the city s development from its earliest settlement. Today it provides a scenic route through the historic lower city, and into the surrounding countryside 15. The nave of Lincoln Cathedral showcases some of the finest architectural detailing anywhere in the world. 16. A closer perspective reveals both the sheer scale of the Cathedral and the intricacy of its construction.

17. Lincoln s public parks, such as the Arboretum, are a legacy of the generosity of 19th century industrialists, and the City maintains them to this day. 18. Roman Lincoln was protected by stout walls and massive gates, the remains of which can still be seen around the city. The ruins of the west gate to the Lower City, seen here, were excavated and preserved in the 1970s. 19. The present-day street pattern of Lincoln retains many elements inherited from earlier Times, as can be seen most clearly from the air. For example the outline of the Roman city is still identifiable, fossilized in the modern layout. 20. Antiquarians and archaeologists have bene gathering information about Lincoln for several hundred years. This map of 1722 is just one of many historic maps that help to build a picture of Lincoln s development over the years.
