Introduction On receiving the brief for this assignment Plan, design and cost a kitchen to suit the floor plan attached I went on to the internet and started to do some research on kitchens. Factors that I included in my research were the working triangle, style of kitchens, complexity of design and material costs. I also took a trip to IKEA and took a look at some of the kitchens in their showroom and I picked up some brochures on worktops, sinks and taps and also the new IKEA kitchen system buying guide 2015 which you will find attached in the appendix. The working triangle in a kitchen is in relation to the position of the sink, the oven and the fridge/freezer. They should be close enough to each other so that when preparing meals there will be no need for a lot of walking back and forward from one appliance to the next one. However they should not be too close that the heat coming from the oven causes the fridge to overwork in order to keep cool. I feel that the working triangle in the kitchen that I have designed works well. I think that it works well because the fridge and oven are on opposite walls to each other which mean that the heat from the oven should not be a problem for the fridge/freezer. Also, between the oven and the sink there is plenty of worktop space for preparing food before going into the oven and also as the sink is close to the oven the pots and pans etc. can be placed in the sink to be washed up after being used without having to walk too far in order to put them into the sink. A good working triangle should also not have any obstacles such as an island in the way in the walking space from one appliance to the other. There are a number of different styles of kitchens. Some of these styles include traditional, contemporary and modern style kitchens. From carrying out my research I found that modern style kitchens have quite a bit going on in them with some having a number of colours in them and some having a lot of curves. I was not a fan of this style of kitchen so in the end I decided to go with a simple design for my kitchen. The kitchen that I have designed has all white units including base units and wall units and it has a walnut worktop. I decided that all the appliances such as the oven, the dishwasher and the fridge/freezer would be built in to the units. The oven can be seen even though it is built in to the units but the fridge/freezer cannot be seen as it is behind a door in the unit that it is built into. The 2
dishwasher also cannot be seen as it has a false front which blends in with the rest of the units in the kitchen. In relation to the cost of the kitchen there were a number of factors that influenced me when I was making my decisions on what materials to use for the kitchen. I wanted my kitchen to be affordable for the average buyer, but I did not want it to be too cheap so that it would turn people off buying it for being too cheap. So at a total price of 5634.75 including appliances and an installation fee of 1000 I think this is an affordable price because the appliances that are included in this price such as the oven/hob, the dishwasher, the fridge/freezer and the extractor fan are quite expensive. Also, some high end kitchens can go for up to 30000. In order to keep my kitchen at an affordable price I decided to use IKEA as the main supplier for the units in my kitchen. I chose IKEA because from my visit to their showroom I knew that they had a number of different product ranges to choose from at a number of different price ranges. Also as I was using a walnut worktop I decided that instead of using a completely solid walnut worktop I use IKEA s pre-cut KARLBY worktop as this was made from particle board with a 3.5mm layer of solid walnut. This worked out cheaper than a solid walnut worktop but looks the same when installed. I chose to price the appliances such as the oven, the dishwasher, the fridge/freezer and the extractor fan from power city instead of IKEA as the brands of appliances that they have in stock are brand that are quite expensive, however I know that they are reliable and should last for a long period of time without breaking. I feel that I have designed a kitchen that is both attractive to look at and is very reasonably priced. I also think that it is a very practical kitchen. Although the kitchen is priced very reasonably, with the addition of the quite expensive appliances I think they make the kitchen seem more expensive. I also feel that the kitchen that I have designed serves the purpose that it has been designed for. 3
