INSTALLATION - FIRST STEPS PLACING YOUR CARVER SUBWOOFER CARVER powered subwoofers are designed to make your music come alive. However, where you place the subwoofer can have an effect on the performance that you receive. All rooms are different, but the strongest output will likely occur if you place your subwoofer in a corner of the room on the same wall as your front channel speakers. This is known as the boundary effect and will emphasize certain bass frequencies while canceling others. Some listeners will find this to be the best sounding result, while others may find it overly boomy or muddy Experiment with the placement options available to you and use the tuning instructions that follow in the set up section of this manual. CONNECTING YOUR CARVER SUBWOOFER For line level connections, use high quality RCA cables that feature low impedance, shielding and high quality connectors. Use two-conductor loudspeaker wire for high level connections to your subwoofer and to any satellite loudspeakers that may be connected as well. DO NOT connect wiring to both sets of inputs simultaneously. Example If you are using loudspeaker level inputs, DO NOT connect an RCA cable to the subwoofer at the same time. Recommended placement of subwoofer in one of the front corners of the room. INSTALLATION CONTROLS CONTROLS Your CARVER Subwoofer s controls and connectors are on the rear panel as shown here. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 PHASE: Use this control to set the subwoofer s phase response to 0 0 0 or 180 1 2 AUTO: Auto turn on mode ON: Amplifier ON 3 POWER INDICATOR GREEN: The subwoofer is on RED: The subwoofer is standby or protect ORANGE: The subwoofer is clipping 4 FREQ: Use this control to set subwoofer s low-pass crossover frequency from 30 to 100 Hz. In the by pass position, the crossover control has no effect. You should set this to bypass if your processor provides it's own subwoofer crossover frequency control. 10 11 12 5 LEVEL: Adjusts the output (Volume) Level of the Subwoofer. 3 13
6 LOW LEVEL INPUT: These connect with RCA type cables from the Line-level outputs of your receiver or preamp. 7 LOW LEVEL OUTPUT: Line level RCA outputs provide a line level full range output for the connection of additional subwoofers or other audio devices. This output is only available when a signal is present at the low level input. 8 HIGH LEVEL IN: Connect the speaker level outputs from your full range amplifier to these input terminals marked "FROM AMPLIFIER". 9 HIGH LEVEL OUT: Connect the high level output terminals marked "TO SPEAKERS" to your passive satellite speakers. 10 POWER SWITCH: Press the switch to turn on/off the subwoofer. 11 AC LINE FUSE: The subwoofer is supplied with a conservative slow-blow type fuse to protect the electronics. If this fuse fails, replace it with the exact same type and current rating for your local AC voltage. 12 IEC POWER CONNECTOR: The subwoofer comes with a detachable line cord that attaches here. Make sure it is firmly pushed into place. Connect the other end to an AC outlet that is properly configured for the type of plug and has the correct Voltage for your model. 13 VOLTAGE SELECTOR SWITCH: 115/230 Voltage select or switch. RECORD YOUR FAVORITE SETTINGS HERE: FREQ. LEVEL REV NOR PHASE Note: Some Home Theater processors and receivers have an internal crossover adjustment which allows you to verify how much of the bass frequency range is sent to the subwoofer. 4
Stereo amplifier POWER MENU MUTE GREEN: ON RED: STANDBY/PRT ORANGE: CLIP INPUT In these systems, it is recommended that you set your subwoofer s own crossover control to maximum frequency, or Bypass. You can then make any crossover frequency adjustments using your Home Theater processor or receiver controls. If the subwoofer s internal crossover is set to a frequency lower than the one on your Home Theater processor or receiver, there would be a hole in the mid-bass, and bass information would be missing. INSTALLATION - GETTING CONNECTED CARVER powered subwoofers are among the most flexible on the market today and can be configured for use in many different applications, as shown in the figures below.
