The Accommodation team are pleased to welcome you to the Halls of Residence here at the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education. We are here to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe experience while living within the Halls of Residence. Within this booklet there is essential information about your new home that aims to make your stay with us as comfortable and pleasant as possible. The Accommodation and Student Union team are here to help you to settle into student life and available to answer any queries or troubles you may have to ensure your stay here in Grimsby adds to your overall experience.

About Us ABOUT US The Grimsby Institute Group (GIG) is one of England s largest providers of Further and Higher Education. With a rich history of developing innovative training and education solutions for the community Our Nuns Corner Campus, located in the centre of Grimsby, is the main provider of vocational training in the region. It provides a broad curriculum that encompasses full and part-time provision from 14 years onwards. Your Accommodation KEYS & KEY CARDS When you arrive you will be given an individual key and temporary key card which will allow you to gain access to both your Halls of Residence and allocated room. You must ensure that all temporary key cards are returned to the Estates Department when access has been granted on your official student badge. You can gain access on your student badge by requesting it at the main campus reception LOST KEYS If you lose your key or key card please contact the Accommodation Officer for a temporary card or replacement. Lost keys can be replaced at a fee of 20.00 LOCKED OUT If you are locked out don t worry! Contact the Accommodation Team, or if out of hours, the Security Team and they will arrange for you to be let back in. INTERNET ACCESS YOUR ACCOMMODATION All accommodation includes a free high speed internet access with Ethernet ports available in every bedroom. An Ethernet cable will be required to connect which can be purchased from the campus shop. Wi-Fi is available free of charge within the common room areas. You can connect by simply choosing the halls wireless username and logging on with the password clearly displayed on the communal notice boards. If you are having trouble connecting or require assistance with a Wi-Fi or hardwire connection you can contact our IT Department where they will be happy provide service and support. 3

Your Accommodation RECYCLING Help us in creating a cleaner, greener future. Please work together within the Halls to recycle and reuse wisely. All accommodation sites have a large mixed dry recycling bin available in the car park. You can recycle tins, cans, plastic, glass, paper and cardboard at these points. At Nuns Corner recycling facilities are available to use and can be found in corridors and communal areas CLEANING A cleaning service is provided on weekdays for the communal areas of your accommodation. Our 2 housekeepers clean surfaces and cooking facilities, such as cookers and microwaves, but they do not clean or wash up personal items including cutlery and cooking pans. Keeping your bedroom and en-suites clean is your own responsibility. Vacuum Cleaners can be found in the common areas for communal use. Living with other people can be difficult. Working together to keep communal areas clean and tidy can help keep a friendly and safe environment. MAINTENANCE All maintenance issues should be reported immediately. All essential maintenance will be carried out within 5 working days and non-essential maintenance in 20 working days. The request for a repair will grant access for our maintenance team to gain access to your bedroom areas. 4

5 Your Accommodation

Your Accommodation LAUNDRY Laundry Facilities can be found free of charge within your accommodation. When using the washing machine and tumble dryers please ensure to follow the instructions outlined within the laundry room. Please do not leave your belongings unattended when using the laundry facilities. CAR PARKING AND BIKES If you own a car and require a parking space throughout your stay in the Halls of Residence you can contact the Accommodation Officer. Once you present your registration number you will be allocated a parking space and granted access to the car park entrance barrier. Bike racks can be found in the car park off all Halls of Residence. Bike shelters are also available at the Nuns Corner Campus. Please visit the Reception to gain access to these facilities on your student card. Please remember to always lock your bike securely! INSURANCE Your personal possessions that you keep in your room are covered by Endsleigh Insurance. This does not cover items such as your laptop and phone when you use them outside your room. You should check that the cover provided meets your needs and purchase additional cover if you feel you need it. When you leave the Accommodation please ensure you change your address as mail will not be forwarded onto your new address. 6

7 Your Accommodation

Your Accommodation GUESTS Within the accommodation friends and family are welcome to stay. All guests must be signed in upon arrival and out upon departure. The sign in sheet is located within the foyer. Friends and family can stay for a 72 hour period free of charge. To request an overnight guest you will need to complete a Guest Request Form. This must be returned to Accommodation with a minimum of 24 hour notice. More details on guest stay can be found on your notice board and in the Guest Policy. GETTING AROUND Finding your way around a new place can be daunting. There are regular buses that run from outside your accommodation that can take you straight to Main Campus, the Town Centre, Supermarkets, Cleethorpes and surrounding areas. A list of bus timetables, routes, and numbers can be found on your notice boards in aiding you to arrange transport around the area. Grimsby Train Station is located in the Town Centre and is in walking distance from Welholme House and Humber Lodge. It is reachable by only a short bus journey from Scartho Hall. Safety and Security SAFETY AND SECURITY FIRE PROCEEDURE ON HEARING THE ALARM: Immediately stop what you are doing and switch off any devices. If it is safe to do so, close windows and doors (do not lock them) as you leave. Evacuate using the nearest designated safe route and exit (following the running man signs). Once out of the building make your way quickly to the designated Fire Assembly Point located in the car park and remain there until the ALL CLEAR is given by someone in authority. IF YOU DISCOVER OR SUSPECT A FIRE: Immediately raise the alarm by operating the nearest break glass point or verbally by shouting FIRE FIRE FIRE Ensure persons have heard the alarm and evacuate (as above) If you are above the ground floor and you are unable to evacuate safely by yourself, you must inform a fire warden or another resident and inform a member of the Grimsby Institute Security (01472 315547). Arrangements can then be made to safely evacuate you. DO NOT: Panic, Run, Stop to collect belongings, Use lifts, Leave the assembly point, Stand close to any building, Re-enter any buildings unless authorised, Obstruct any access area for emergency services. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIGHT THE FIRE UNLESS YOU HAVE RECEIVED SUITABLE TRAINING 9

Safety and Security FIRE ALARMS, EQUIPMENT AND TESTING Fire alarms and firefighting equipment are fitted throughout the accommodation for your safety. Please do not remove or maliciously tamper with this equipment it from the walls at any point during your stay. Fire doors run throughout the accommodation. It is important you do not prop the fire doors open at any point during your stay The fire alarm will be tested on a Friday afternoon weekly. Fire drills will be carried out throughout the year. It is important when hearing the alarm not to panic and to evacuate the building as quickly and safely as possible. SMOKING The Grimsby Institute operates a strict no smoking policy, which means that smoking is not permitted in any Grimsby Institute building. Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking shelters. Individuals caught smoking in prohibited areas may be asked to leave site or liable to a spot fine if caught by an enforcement officer. 10

Safety and Security COOKING All kitchens are fully equipped with cooking appliances. You cannot use cooking appliances or prepare meals within your room. Please remember to monitor your cooking when preparing food. CANDLES The use of candles, portable heaters, incense burners or any form of naked flame are not permitted at any time within the accommodation. STAY SAFE Our Campus Accommodation provides a safe and secure place to live, however you should take precautions to ensure that you keep yourself and your belongings as safe as possible. Tips: Always close your windows when you leave your room especially if you live on the ground floor. This will deter opportunist thieves and prevent windows from closing sharply during windy conditions. Do not hold the accommodation doors open for other people if you do not know them. Do not give keys or student cards to anyone. Do not leave belongings unattended within your communal areas. If you witness any suspicious activity or person(s) acting suspiciously please ensure you inform Security (01472 315547) and the Sccommodations Officer FIRST AID, ACCIDENT OR ILLNESS If you have an accident whilst in the Accommodation you must notify the Accommodation Officer. Ensure that the details are entered into an Institute accident book with the 12

Safety and Security DRUGS AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Within the accommodation there is a zero-tolerance policy towards the use of illegal and illicit substances, and any student found guilty of using, dealing or supplying such substances will be asked to leave the Halls of Residence immediately. Any student who may be concerned about drug use on campus, should contact learner services, or in the case of a medical emergency, call 999. Anti-social behaviour is not acceptable with the Halls of Residence. Any cases should be immediately reported to Security, Accommodation and if required the Police. HEALTH AND WELFARE Grimsby Institute Gym Like to keep fit? The Grimsby Institute has its very own fitness suite and sports facilities at main campus. Students can use these facilities from as little as 2.50 per week! Pre-Existing Medical Conditions If you have any pre-existing medical conditions please alert the Accommodation Officer so required alterations or arrangements can be made to better accommodate you. Doctors If at any point you require a doctor during your stay here at The Grimsby Institute, you can attend the Quayside Open Access Centre.
