Pioneer Park War Memorial Sponsorship Package DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF GAWLER S HISTORY? The Town of Gawler and RSL Gawler Sub Branch are seeking sponsors for a new War Memorial to be designed by Robert Hannaford AM and installed at Pioneer Park You are invited to be part of this historic project

Welcome The Town of Gawler is always looking to forge partnerships with like-minded organisations to build a uniquely identifiable township. Do you want to align your business with a project that will enhance the community s strong sense of pride? Do you have something to offer our community that you would like to share? You can achieve these goals by sponsoring the Pioneer Park War Memorial project. About the new Pioneer Park War Memorial Gawler is proud of its military history and is committed to honouring and remembering its defence force personnel in a respectful way. As a major regional centre, Gawler is host to the largest Anzac Service outside Adelaide, with more than 8000 people attending Anzac and Remembrance Day Services in Pioneer Park each year. The Town of Gawler and RSL Gawler Sub Branch are working in partnership to install a new War Memorial in Pioneer Park. Town of Gawler has engaged Robert Hannaford AM, a highly commissioned South Australian portrait artist and sculptor, to design the new War Memorial. Mr Hannaford has completed paintings for a number of universities, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Library and Parliament House. In 2001, he was commissioned by the Australian Government to paint the Centenary of Federation 2001 and the painting now hangs in Parliament House in Canberra. He has been an Archibald Prize finalist more than 20 times and has won the People s Choice award on multiple occasions. Other commissions include bronze sculptures of Sir Donald Bradman, located in the Creswell Gardens (adjacent to the eastern entrance to the Adelaide Oval), Simpson and his Donkey, located in the Angas Gardens, a bronze bust of Sir William Henry Bragg on North Terrace, in front of Government House, Adelaide, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial at Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide. Robert Hannaford AM has an interest in the history and tradition of war art which was sparked by his professional relationships with Ivor Hele and Geoffrey Mainwaring who he was fortunate to meet in his career. In addition to undertaking work on two key war memorials for South Australia, Robert Hannaford AM illustrated the children s book My Gallipoli which prompted him to go to the Gallipoli Peninsula to immerse himself in the mood of the place itself. With a passion for the subject matter and significant expertise in sculpting, the Town of Gawler is confident that Robert Hannaford AM will produce a moving and brilliant sculpture that will not only be the centrepiece of all commemorative activities but also a quality and significant permanent art work that can be enjoyed by all visitors to Gawler. 2

Mr Hannaford has designed a unique, original and significant piece of public art for Gawler and South Australia. The imposing 4.4m wide by 2m high sculptural interpretation of a human hand will be cast in bronze and placed on a rectangular concrete plinth (5.5m long by 2m deep) surrounded by circular paving connecting to the existing pathway in Pioneer Park. This paving at ground level provides for accessible, 360 degree viewing of the sculpture and the raised plinth provides for commemorative activities such as wreath laying and RSL plaques. Mr Hannaford describes the Memorial as an abstract, enigmatic form conveying the feeling of service, war, conflict and peacekeeping. The poignancy of tragedy and loss of life is conveyed in the hand s form with the bent shape implicitly creating a feeling of subtlety. Inspired by the Grecian and Roman sculptural greats, the hand is a significant and brave departure from conventional war memorials. The design is inclusive of age, colour, creed, culture, disability, family status, gender, nationality, marital status, parental status, race or social origin, religious beliefs or activity, sexual orientation and all defence personnel (navy, army and air force). It will be a moving and powerful symbol, open to interpretation, and evoke many different emotions from visitors to the Memorial ranging from the tragedy of the loss of young lives during war time to hope and a helping hand during peaceful times. Robert Hannaford AM s monologue to camera describing the work provides further information on the vision and inspiration behind this significant public art: https://youtu.be/bwehtbgbujm This unique, original, high quality and modern piece of art for South Australia will be installed in the State Heritage Listed Pioneer Park. The Park, located on the corner of Gawler s main street and arterial connection to the Barossa Valley, is a major tourist attraction for Gawler. It is also the Council s premier outdoor civic event site and hosts a range of community and private events every year. 3

Visible from Gawler s Main Street and accessible on a 24/7 basis, Mr Hannaford s sculpture will be viewed by the tens of thousands of people that frequent Pioneer Park every year providing maximum exposure and accessibility to the community. It will also provide a place of reflection for all the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, and to ensure their contribution, suffering, sacrifice and memory lives on. The proposed sculpture by Robert Hannaford AM is a major iconic permanent artwork that will complement the State Heritage Listed Pioneer Park and become intrinsically linked with the identity of Gawler. It will be of cultural, artistic and educational significance to the region. It is expected that, given Mr Hannaford s involvement and the significance of the art, this Memorial will attract tourists to Gawler, resulting in increased economic activity and local job creation. In addition, a link to the RSL Virtual War Memorial will provide the perfect place for schools and families to visit and learn about our war history. This significant piece of public art will provide an appropriate Memorial giving military families, the community and the thousands of visitors to Gawler each year with a wonderful point of discussion on the significance of art and why we as a nation, acknowledge and commemorate the service and sacrifice of all of Australia s servicemen and women. Direct Benefits of a Sponsorship Partnership By forming a partnership with the Town of Gawler your business has the opportunity to receive significant profile at fundraising events, project updates and the official unveiling of the Pioneer Park War Memorial. Your business can form a mutually beneficial partnership offering brand exposure and expansion of your client base. In return you will be helping to build a local community of which the residents of Gawler and surrounding areas can be proud. Sponsoring the Pioneer Park War Memorial provides an opportunity to increase your profile through many avenues, including: Physical display for your business at Pioneer Park War Memorial fundraising events Acknowledgement of your businesses contribution at the unveiling of the Pioneer Park War Memorial Placement of your business logo on the Town of Gawler s Pioneer Park War Memorial website, project updates and promotional material. 4

Indirect Benefits of a Sponsorship Partnership The Town of Gawler is a major regional and cultural centre for communities to the north of Adelaide including the nearby agricultural and horticultural communities located in the midnorth, northern Adelaide Plains and Barossa Valley. Gawler currently services a catchment of 90,000 people with this figure expected to grow considerably in the near future. By sponsoring the Pioneer Park War Memorial project your business will not only receive exposure within Gawler itself but also with visitors from beyond the borders of the Town of Gawler. The Pioneer Park War Memorial will have links to the RSL Virtual War Memorial and connection via RSL Gawler Sub Branch to other clubs across South Australia. Thus, via cross-promotion, your business can also be promoted state-wide. What Sponsorship Partnerships are Available? The Pioneer Park War Memorial currently has four (4) levels of partnership available: These partnerships are available for both cash and in-kind support. A detailed description of each of the partnerships is contained in the remainder of this document. If you would like further information on any of the partnerships please do not hesitate to contact: Tara Shillabeer: Special Projects Officer Town of Gawler, PO Box 130, Gawler SA 5118 Ph 8522 9275 Email tara.shillabeer@gawler.sa.gov.au Mobile 0499 800 465 www.gawler.sa.gov.au 5
