AS/NZS :2006 Interior and workplace lighting - Part 1: General principles and recommendations

Mobile The world of the traditional office is undergoing major changes. The working environment has changed dramatically, thanks to the use of new means of communication and new technologies. Working in flexible organisational structures nowadays requires the mobility of employees and of office furniture and equipment. Individual We are who we are. In keeping with modern trends, we see the office not only as a task-orientated working space but also as part of our personal living environment. The desire for a pleasant, motivating working area has therefore clearly become a central topic. The task of furnishing a workplace individually and according to personal needs must be accomplished. 2

Flexible Nothing is as it used to be, nor as it appears to be. New forms of work demand flexible schemes in the design and use of the working environment. This is true for the workplace at home, for the satellite office and the main HQ; for normal desk work, VDT tasks and desk sharing. Modern workplaces demand flexibility to its fullest extent. 3

Free-standing uplights, task lights and wall lights Change is one of the characteristic features of the present age. Rooms and technology must be capable of adapting to constant change in other words, they must be organised flexibly. The same applies to lighting. Teamwork, concentrated individual work, meetings, and also, of course, social gatherings must all take place in the correct lighting atmosphere, which often has to be provided in the same room. This task obviously requires multifunctional, highly versatile systems of uplights, task lights and wall lights, such as the ID-S. Through flexible arrangements and varying photometric characteristics, this combination of up, down and task lighting offers the ideal response to the tough requirements of a dynamic office world. 4

Light and visual display terminals In our communication and informtionbased society, screens have become a permanent feature of the office landscape. In Europe, the European Union has issued directives to protect the health and safety of employees. The most crucial design features The following requirements apply when carrying out design work for visual display terminals: Ensure satisfactory lighting conditions Make sure there is sufficient contrast between the screen and its environment Prevent annoying glare or reflections on the screen Fit windows with adjustable shielding to protect against unwanted light Employers have a duty to look after the health and safety of employees. According to EU directives, proof of this must be submitted by means of a workplace survey. Are luminaires for visual display terminals available? Beware of assuming that so-called»vdt«or»category rated«luminaires will solve the problem. No country has published a standard that defines luminaires for visual display terminals in concrete terms. There are only stipulations which describe»lighting in rooms with visual display terminals«. Given the complexity of this subject, the most important design factors are those stated in the following notes: Viewing direction parallel to windows Where it is stipulated that the direction in which the screen is viewed must be parallel to the windows, it is possible to select a standard layout for louvre luminaires positioned laterally to the left and right of the workstations. Sectionalised workstation with alternative viewing directions Sectionalised workstations are often encountered in modern offices with visual display terminals. Typically, the screen is positioned so that it slants relative to the main viewing direction at an angle of 30 to 45. Indirect/direct luminaires are useful in this case. Sectionalised workstation with unspecified viewing direction If the layouts of desks and screens and the position of luminaires and the main viewing direction are not stipulated relative to each other, lighting must be flexibly designed to cope with any situation. There are two recommendations in this case: 1.Indirect/direct schemes which utilise moveable free-standing and/or wallmounted uplights, together with suitable direct component, or task lights as needed. 2.»MELLOW LIGHT«concept with reduced luminances at any angle. This makes it possible to minimise phenomena that have an adverse effect when working with a keyboard or screen. Lighting management and visual display terminals Light can also be perfectly matched to suit a particular activity by using lighting management. Screen-based work, ordinary office work and conferences are inherently different in terms of the requirements they impose on lighting. It is important that incoming daylight does not cause annoyance of any kind due to glare or reflections. Control of sunlight and glare protection are therefore an integral part of any good lighting solution. Light can be modified to meet a particular requirement straightforwardly and reliably by means of a modern light control system such as LUXMATE. Windows as a source of glare and nuisance Windows create the greatest risk of annoyance due to glare at visual display terminals. Outdoor luminance levels up to 50,000 cd/m 2 are common on bright summer days. The 1,000 cd/m 2 output of a luminaire is very small in comparison. A lighting management system can incorporate daylight and include controlled protection against daylight glare and sunlight. 6

Lighting concepts Indirect illumination The luminaires radiate light onto the ceiling from where it is reflected into the room. Ideally, the ceiling should have a reflection factor of at least 70 %. The ceiling is brightened by using the widest possible light distribution. This simulates the impression of natural light on an overcast day. Surfaces such as walls etc. are well lit. The room must be high (>2.8 m) in order to make sure that the ceiling is brightened as much as possible, without creating hot spots. Shades of white or light pastel colours which create a pleasant room ambience are suitable colours for the ceiling. Where indirect free-standing luminaires with a symmetrical light distribution are used, care must be taken to ensure that they are evenly placed throughout the room. With an asymmetrical light distribution, a freestanding luminaire should be placed beside the workstation or window frontage so that the lights emanates into the centre of the room. Benefits for the individual Pleasant perception of space Glossy documents are easier to read due to absence of reflections Good contrast rendition for working on documents Benefits for office premises Prestigious appearance of executives offices, secretarial and lobby areas Good light distribution due to regular arrangement of luminaires Architecturally interesting thanks to grouping of luminaires Workstation considerations Workstation layout is highly flexible Guaranteed absence of reflections for CAD applications and negative format screens Reduced shadowing Indirect/direct (ID) illumination Indirect/direct (ID) illumination combines the advantages of both purely direct and purely indirect lighting. Balanced direct and indirect components create a pleasant room ambience by providing sufficient vertical illuminances and good shadowing. Benefits for the individual Offers good ceiling brightness and efficient illumination of work surface Good shadowing and bright room surfaces lend the space an inviting feel. Benefits for office premises Prestigious appearance of executives offices, secretarial and lobby areas Architecturally interesting thanks to grouping of luminaires Elaborate or interesting ceilings can be highlighted Electrical and other supplies through under-floor ducting Bright peripheral surfaces and extremely economical where reflection factor of ceiling exceeds 70 %. Workstation considerations Individual, flexible workstation layout Use of task lights combined with indirect free-standing or wall-mounted luminaires. Task lights offer the possibility of switching lighting on and off in the working area depending on the task in hand 7

FLEXOS free-standing uplight and wall light»the FLEXOS free-standing uplight, designed by Da Costa & Wolf, is fully variable and can be built up in modules.«da Costa & Wolf Designers of Flexos Flexibility in the world of work demands flexibility of lighting. What is therefore more natural than a freestanding uplight and precisely a free-standing uplight which is fully variable and can be built up in modules. This was the approach of the designers Da Costa & Wolf. The result is a family of free-standing uplights which can be used in all variations both for single and multi-place workstations. But FLEXOS is not just for lighting workplaces, it is also designed to meet demanding ambient lighting requirements. 8

FLEXOS free-standing uplight and wall light FLEXOS Lighting cannot be more flexible. The FLEXOS free-standing uplight is available with one, two, three or four heads. Each one can be pivoted separately and switched individually. For purposes of design, the free-standing uplight can be placed anywhere in the room, next to a table or between several tables. An indirect component of 60 % combined with a direct component of 40% provides good contrast rendition and lighting which causes neither glare nor unwanted reflections. Only energy-saving light sources (TC-L) and electronic ballasts are used in FLEXOS. The range of free-standing uplights is complemented by the FLEXOS wall light. It is made in a very slim, modern design which nevertheless includes all the technical lighting features of the FLEXOS range. 10

ID-S, ID-SW free-standing uplight and wall light»the ID-S free-standing uplights and wall lights combine the good with the beautiful, as an attractive lighting object in the room.«sottsass Associati designers of the ID-S free-standing uplight and the ID-SW wall light In 1987, commissioned by Zumtobel Staff, the renowned design studio of Sottass Associati developed a luminaire - ID-S, ID-SW - which created a sensation, because of both its design and its technical lighting features. The clear, simple lines and the outstanding shape of the luminaire head have made this free-standing uplight and wall light a classic in mobile room lighting. 14

ID-S, ID-SW free-standing uplight and wall light ID-SW The ID-SW wall light can be used for independent, purely indirect lighting and also for supplementing indirect/direct lighting schemes based on the ID-S free-standing uplight. ID-S With its large indirect component and the use of halogen lamps, this classic amongst free-standing uplights provides a pleasant, warm lighting ambience. By means of the adjustable reflector in the head of the luminaire, the direct component can be directed onto the working surface. 16

Reflection factors: ceiling 70%, walls 50%, floor 20%. The room size (small, medium, large) determines the bar to use for the relevant type of luminaire. Depending on the intensity of illumination required in the room ( to ) the appropriate number of luminaires per 10 m 2 can be read off the vertical axis. SPHEROS free-standing luminaire and wall light»spheros is the synthesis of creativity and perfection.«hartmut S. Engel, designers of SPHEROS Advanced lighting design requires great creativity. SPHEROS gives lighting designers the functional versatility and flexibility they need for translating their ideas into action. An established tool for architects and lighting designers, SPHEROS is an innovative lighting system that combines consistent design with a wealth of different luminaire and lighting options. Design is more than just giving shape to an object. Design is a conscious expression of creative will, aimed at giving the user an optimum product both inside and out. In SPHEROS, Hartmut S. Engel has reduced optical volumes to a minimum. 26

SPHEROS free-standing luminaire and wall light SAS With the SPHEROS free-standing luminaire, the corner of the room becomes the central focus of a highly effective lighting display. Soft direct lighting conveys cool elegance; indirect halogen lighting radiates warmth. The fascinating interplay of light and emotion is shown in the combination of indirect and direct lighting. SAW The strictly symmetrical design of the wall light, modelled on the ceiling luminaire, is in deliberate contrast with the asymmetrical light distribution pattern. This unusual configuration has met with the widest acceptance. As an integral part of the system configuration, the wall light creates prestigious visual and formal highlights. As the»leading light«in individualistic lighting scenes, it stands out for its decorative light and shape. 28
