1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 DI-50 Description 1.2 Items Included The DI-50 is an endorsing machine dedicated to the efficient processing of checks. It is an economical yet productive machine, taking its power from a standard outlet through a dedicated transformer. Checks are justified to insure that the lead edge and the near side are in line and dropped in the feed hopper. From there, they are passed individually under a print head, endorsing and counting each one. I A G H B F C D E Figure 1.1 - DI-50 with Components 1

3. OPERATION 3.1 Controls and Indicators Power: Power switch on input end of the unit controls output of external transformer. Feed: Push button switch turns on paper transport and lights a red indicator LED when on. Print: Push Button Switch causes the Print mechanism to rotate past the Ink Roll, printing on the check. It lights a red LED when on. Move Print: Slide Pot control. Moves the imprint from the lead edge to as much as 4" down the check. To print on the trailing edge of the check, feed the check bottom end first and install a reverse printing patch on the Print mechanism FEED SWITCH MOVE PRINT CONTROL PRINT SWITCH Figure 3.1 - Control Panel 5
3.2 Loading and Feeding Checks Counter: The re-settable counter counts endorsed checks. Imprint Knob: Located under the Cover. Turn the knob counter clock wise (CCW) to darken the image (place more ink on the Endorsing Plate) and clock wise (CW) to lighten the image. 1. First justify the checks so that they are all stacked in the same manner. If there are various sizes of check to be run in a single batch, jog them flush to the operator side of the feed hopper and forward with lead edges against the paper stop. Shape the pile of checks so that the bottom is closest to the paper stop. Flatten wrinkled checks as best you can. CHECKS ON OFF ON OFF Figure 3.2 - Loading Checks (top view) 2. Snug the Side Guide to the pile of checks. Do not get it too tight as it will pinch the stack of paper and interrupt feeding. 3. If the Power is off, turn it on, install the Catch Tray if necessary and press the Feed Switch. Pieces should move through the machine. They will not be endorsed. 6
4. Adjust the Feed Gap (see Double feed) if pieces double or use the wedge and/or weight (see Advanced Feeding) if pieces fail to feed. 5. Clear the paper path, load the unprinted pieces in the hopper and press the Print switch. 6. Turn on the feed and imprinting begins. Note the machine will not shut down when empty, turn the Feed Switch off at the end of a batch and turn all switches off at the end of the run. STACK OF PAPER WEDGE PAPER WEIGHT KNOB SEPARATOR FEED ROLL FEED HELPER ROLL Figure 3.3 - Loading Checks (side view) 3.3 Advanced Feeding: The Endorser has two paper feed aides - the Paper Weight and the Wedge The Paper Weight swings up and over the stack of paper and rests on the stack pressing it down on to the feed roll. This is most useful when paper is not uniform. The Wedge lifts the rear of the stack of paper, changing its angle into the Feed Roll. The Wedge may be adjusted by loosening the knob on the input end of the machine and raising or lowering the Wedge to the position where pieces feed the best. 7
3.4 Position Print While feeding and printing checks, move the Print Position control forward to move the imprint to the lead edge of the check. Slide it backward to move the print farther from the lead edge. Be careful to avoid printing over the lead edge. FEED SWITCH MOVE PRINT CONTROL PRINT SWITCH Figure 3.4 - Move Print 3.5 Change Date: 1. Turn Feed off. 2. Open cover. 3. Lift Ink Roll Carrier out of way. 4. 4.2 Clearing Jams: Hedman DI-50 1. When a jam occurs, lift the cover. This immediately stops feeding and endorsing. If you do not want the feed to resume after clearing the jam, turn the Feed Switch off. 2. Remove the Tractor Assembly by grasping the roll and pushing it away from the operator. This compresses a spring and allows the Tractor Assembly and its shaft to be lifted out of the machine. 3. Remove all jammed paper, completely clearing the paper path. 4. Replace the Tractor Assembly by inserting the spring end of the shaft in its hole, compressing the spring and inserting the operator end in its mounting slot. The operator s end is flatted so that it will slide into the correct position. Close the cover, and resume as before. TRACTOR Figure 4.2 - Clearing jams VIEW FROM NON-OPERATOR SIDE TOWARD OPERATOR SIDE. NOTE Do not lift the cover while the endorser is running checks. If the cover is lifted, the machine goes into a jam condition and all checks must be cleared from the paper path and the machine must be reset by turning it off and on again before imprinting can resume. Failure to clear all paper from the paper path will cause the machine not to imprint. 4.3 Cleaning 13
Your DI-50 will need regular cleaning. How often, depends on the amount of paper dust your checks generate and the care you take to avoid getting ink on the roller. Wipe surface dust or debris from the DI-50 with a damp cloth as necessary. While cleaning, inspect the DI-50 periodically for damage or worn parts. WARNING UNPLUG THE DI-50 PRIOR TO CLEANING ANY MOVING PARTS Wipe the roller using a cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Rotate the roller manually as you wipe it to clean the entire circumference. Use Gloves. WARNING UNPLUG THE POWER CORD BEFORE REMOVING, ADJUSTING OR REPAIRING ANY PARTS IN THE DI-50. 14
