FUN FACTS Radishes were used as money in ancient Egypt. Once a radish gets too old, it will crack and split. Radish comes from the Latin word radix- which means root. Radishes are a healthy and nutritious root vegetable. I m worth my weight in gold!

SPOT IT ON THE MAP Radishes are grown primarily in Orange and Palm Beach Counties.

HAVE YOU TRIED A FLORIDA RADISH? Florida radishes are harvested in the winter and spring months. They are available from November through May. Look for this logo to find Florida-grown radishes!

RAD ABOUT RADISHES Click here to learn about radishes!

K-2 SOCIAL STUDIES JOBS IN AGRICULTURE There are many important roles in agriculture that help make sure the food you eat is safe and fresh! Here are some examples: Farm Manager Truck Driver Scientist Grocer Food Safety Inspector Veterinarian Chef Packager Farm Staff Distributor

K-2 SOCIAL STUDIES JOBS IN AGRICULTURE The Role of a Farm Manager and the Farm Staff The farm manager is in charge of the entire farm staff. They solve many different problems. One possible problem would be if there was a bad rainstorm and the fields flooded. They also hire the staff and make all of the staff s schedules. The staff on the farm plant and harvest the vegetables. They are able to tell when the produce is ready to be picked!

K-2 SOCIAL STUDIES Jobs in Agriculture The Role of a Scientist on a Farm Did you know that plants can get diseases too? It is important to keep plants healthy and that is where the role of the scientist comes into farming. Scientists help keep plants healthy so that farms can grow as much produce as possible. Find out more about what a plant scientist does here: http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-engineering-careers/life-sciences/plant-scientist#whatdotheydo

K-2 SOCIAL STUDIES JOBS IN AGRICULTURE The Role of a Veterinarian on a Farm Plants are not the only things that need to remain healthy on a farm; the animals do too! A veterinarian looks out for the care of farm animals. Veterinarians give farm animals medicine called vaccines, check their teeth and teach farm staff how to take care of the animals.

K-2 SCIENCE WHY IS SOIL SO IMPORTANT? Soil contains the minerals and nutrients that allow plants to grow strong and healthy. Plants absorb these nutrients from the soil through their roots. Radishes are a type of root vegetable.

K-2 SCIENCE SOIL MINI LAB 1. Fill a Mason Jar half full with soil. 2. Wet the soil until muddy and tap the jar to settle the soil. 3. Mark the level of soil on the jar with a permanent marker. 4. Let the soil sit for 40 seconds, mark the level of soil in the jar. This is the sand portion. 5. Wait six hours and mark the level of soil in the jar. The difference between the bottom mark (the sand) and the second mark is the silt portion of the soil. The total sand plus silt is the distance from the bottom of the jar to the second mark.

K-2 SCIENCE SOIL LAYERS Soil sure does have a lot of layers!

K-2 LANGUAGE ARTS RADICAL ROOT WORDS Did you know that, like plants, words also have roots? A root word is the most basic part of the word Prefixes are put at the beginning of the word. Examples are un- and anti- Suffixes are put at the end of the word. Examples are -able and -tion

K-2 LANGUAGE ARTS Root Words I m cute for a root!

NUTRITION NUGGET Radishes are a good source of vitamin C and contain other important nutrients such as potassium and magnesium. One cup of sliced radishes only has 19 calories. Eating plenty of vegetables, like radishes, may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers.

TASTY TIPS Squeeze radishes to be sure they are not mushy before they are purchased. Store radishes in a perforated plastic bag in the crisper area of the refrigerator. They will keep for 3-5 days. Radishes are wonderful in salads and slaws. They add color, texture and flavor. Radishes flavor well with thyme and dill. Visit Fresh From Florida for more tasty recipes!

What is small, red, and whispers? A hoarse radish! Where did the radish go to have a few drinks? The salad bar! Why couldn t the radish finish the race? He was just a little beet!
