I m almost completely recovered but definitely no withdrawals. Each of you who participated in the show, with the plant sale or volunteered in any capacity during the event has much to celebrate. Asides from that 90 degrees temperature on set-up day, the main two days weather was more pleasing to most people to the point of chilliness. Nevertheless, I want to congratulate the club for hosting such a successful and well-received show and sale. Many accolades came from the public attendees, the church s leadership, and as wells as members from other cactus/succulent societies. This feat of six months planning and culminating with three days of pure volunteer work and sweat could only have been accomplished by each of you that contributed your time and efforts. Thank you to the Board/planning committee for the vision and guidance throughout this process. Greg and Anna, your bountiful ideas for the show room was no less than the best for our plant show. Along with Linda Walsh and her son, Sandy Wall and her husband, John, the Urmans, the Roholts, the Sedanos, you transformed our meeting room into the ideal showroom. Our kitchen masters, Judy and Ann made sure the food kept filling our empty belly to keep our engines moving. Everyone who brought potluck food to share- yummy to the last drop! Better than Home Town Buffet. Our setup and cleanup crew for the outdoor sales venue first braved the sunny heat then made sure that area was tidy clean at the end, other than the worn out patches of lawn due to human stampede. Your work is greatly appreciated- Corey, Carol, Daryl, Pam, Trish, Rene, Mike, Jeffrey, Epimenio, the Taylors.The cashier/check-out team performed overtime miracles with this very crucial task- Joann, Sandra, Kim, Karen, Pam, Evelyn, Jeff. Each vendor contributed immensely to the sale s success and those who participated with the plant show- thank you for traveling from nearby and afar to be with us. This year we added a small raffle opportunity to the event with some donated prizes from Sal Cervantes, Mr. Fertilizer, and Don Knipp. Overall, hosting this annual show/sale event in a new location this year has surpassed my expectations. To the judges- Peter, Woody, John, Kelly and the six clerks- Judy, Kim, Rico, Karen, Greg, Anna and our two show tabulators- Trish and Jeff, you all made my job that much easier and more productive. Other members also helped around the sales area and within the showroom; each making sure all things went well - like Ann, Cathy, Helen, Teresa, Tony and Ben. Please forgive me if I have inadvertently not acknowledged your contribution; it is not of intention- I am grateful. To each and every person, it was a pleasure and delight working with you. Our Program This Month Peter Walkowiak "Landscaping With Succulents A how to from the beginning to completion In this talk I will give you my perspective from a landscaper and designer point of view. There are many welldone succulent landscapes. But there there are also a large number of poorly executed that are being installed all the time these days. With the many years of my experience to draw on you will be taken though a step-by-step process that will break the whole project down. There are a number of phases that must be followed so that you do not waste money or time. These are: 1) Site evaluation 2) Landscape design 3) Hardscape 4) Soil preparation 5) Plants and boulders 6) Irrigation 7) Final design elements Each phase has many steps and will be detailed in the talk and handout that I will provide. In the talk I will take you through several jobs from start to finish as well as current pictures. You will see the before, during and finish of each landscape. Each step and stage will be explained using the pictures to go with the narration. I no longer do landscaping but feel that all the knowledge I have should be shared with everyone who is considering redoing their yard to a succulent landscape. BIO I graduated in 1985 from Cal Poly Pomona with a B.S. Degree in Ornamental Horticulture. Worked as manager, production manager and section manager for three wholesale nurseries for 14 years. Ran a landscaping business for another 14 years, the last five years of which I specialized in succulent landscapes. During the landscaping part of my life I restarted collecting plants for my collection. This led to propagating plants from seed and thus the seed was sown for the nursery that I now own and run for the last four years. My interest in succulent plants really got going in college, 1981-82. By the time I graduated my collection had grown to 200 and many are still alive. This collection has grown to more than 2,000 currently. The collection consists of cacti, euphorbias and caudiciforms. I am the current president of the Palomar CSS and was on the board for the San Diego CSS. I am on the Board of Directors of the C.S.S.A. for the last eight years and serve as the Nominations and Sales Chair. Astrophytum Buck Hemenway The genus Astrophytum is small in numbers, but this North American group of plants is among the most beautiful and unusual of all in the cactus family. Most of them begin life as globular plants with different patterns of flocking on their epidermis and very different spine patterns. They will grow more columnar in shape as they age with the exception of Astrophytum asterias which retains its flattened globular shape. They generally have 5 ribs, but can have as few as 3 and can have more than 5 with age. The flocking patterns have made Astrophytum a favorite of Japanes hybridizers who are constantly trying to find special or heavy patterns that they can name and sell in the market. It is not unusual for a newly named and described Japanese Astrophytum so sell for several thousand dollars. The most popular plant in the genus is A. myriostigma which usually has a uniform flocking to the point that the plant looks grey, while the skin color is actually green. A mature (10 years old or more) plant will be nearly 12 tall and 6 or more wide. They are more or less spineless. One of the most unusual plants in all cactus is A. caput-medusae. It looks more like a succulent Senecio than a cactus, but is has the flocking and the flower of the Astrophytum genus. The stems are not long lived, but generate froma persistant tuberous root. Astrophytum has a distribution of Southwestern US (Texas) and Northeastern Mexico. Flowers are either all yellow or yellow with a red throat. Mealy bugs love Astrophytums because they can hide in the flocking. We find that if we lightly spray the plant with water or a chemical bug killer, the flocking saturates, and basically disappears and the mealies are exposed to cotton swabs laced with rubbing alcohol or your favorite topical bug killer. Astrophytums love heat. They will stand our IE summer sun and heat and love it. They are sensitive to cold and wet as their habitat is nearly all summer rainfall. So, dry in the winter and water and heat in the summer is the perfect way to grow these glorious plants. Astrophytum myriostigma Astrophytum capricorne ssp. niveum Astrophytum myriostigma Onzuka
Pachypodium By: Buck Hemenway This is a relatively small genus of plants, all succulents that grow in southern Africa and Madagascar. We just discussed epiphytic plants. The Pachypodium genus has several geophytic species. Geophytes are plants that grow primarily underground and are assumed to have evolved due to the arid growing conditions in which they exist. The large tuber-like structures grow entirely underground and extend more or less perennial, woody stems above ground that get leaves and flowers. Most of the species have more normal growth patterns and tend to be fat trunked upright perennial sub-trees that grow in very inhospitable places, such as the Thorn Forest of southern Madagascar and rocky outcrops in the Richtersveld. The most common of these plants in hobbyists collections is Pachypodium lamerei, or Madagascar Palm. Of course, it is not a palm at all, but the growth of bright green leaves at the tops of the branches reminds one of a palm tree. The genus is part of the family Apocynaceae, which is large and widely distributed. We know the Plumeria, Oleander and Adenium species that are all part of this large plant family. One will recognize that many of the plants in this family are poisonous and care should be taken with them. Pachypodiums grow in places that don t get much freezing weather. They are susceptible to rot in winter if they are in wet soil when the weather nears freezing. Care must be taken to plant them in extremely well drained locations when in the ground and in locations that will provide reflected heat during the day such as up against a south facing wall. The blooms are many and beautiful. Large swirling white flowers on Pachypodium lamerei in late fall and P. lealii v. saundersii in summer, reward the collector. The geophytes, P. bispinosum and P. succulentum have smaller but more colorful flowers in the spring. They are well worth the trouble of finding just the right location and reward us with fantastic shapes and beautiful flowers.
