NEW ENGLAND CARNIVOROUS PLANT SOCIETY June 2007 Newsletter NECPS s June 2007 meeting will be held on SATURDAY JUNE 9 TH at 12:30 PM at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center (Greenhouses) 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, RI 02907 NECPS Mission Statement "The mission of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society shall be to share, to gain knowledge of, and to achieve expertise in all phases of growing, education, appreciation, and conservation of carnivorous plants in both culture and in native habitats." Hello All, Message from the President The midpoint of 2007 has arrived for the NECPS with the June meeting. It s been a great year so far for the Society, moving back into our home at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, receiving an order of amazing plants from Andreas Wistuba in Germany, and the planting of the bog at the Botanical Center with donations from so many members and so many plants from Black Jungle terrarium supply. Page 1 of 6

The June meeting is the last meeting before the break for summer (as we do not have a formal July meeting ever) but still there is so much ahead for NECPS members. We have a Bog walk (with the RI Wild Plant Society ) June 16 at a new location for our members, and of course the July Bog walk at the great Swamp in southern RI; followed by a short trip to my house to see my bog and greenhouse. Then the annual pilgrimage to Black Jungle Supply s greenhouses in August, and of course the 2007 Carnivorous Plant Show that will be held September 29 th and 30 th at the wonderful new Botanical Center! So while we ve had a great year so far, we have LOTS more in store in the second half of the year for members, families and friends of the New England Carnivorous Plant society! I hope to see you all at the June meeting before we take our annual break, and I wish you all a fantastic summer of growing, and FEEDING, the plants we all love. Namaste ~ John Phillip, Jr. NECPS Program: June 9, 2007 Infections in the Garden Presented by: Frank Meglio As cultivators of carnivorous plants, we always have to keep an eye out on our always-hungry plants, lest we want to be known posthumously as the first person to be eaten alive by a voracious Nepenthes rajah! More seriously, there are many hidden perils when working in the garden. Most of us are inundated with warnings of the hazards of using chemicals but little is said regarding the dangers of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and even worms found in the horticultural materials we commonly handle. Come to the June meeting and find out about the horrors that await you in the garden. This lecture is not for the hypochondriacs among us! Other business: Members are encouraged to bring plants for display. There WILL be a silent auction, so members are encouraged to donate plants for a good cause. We need Plants! One of the most asked about and exciting displays in the new Botanical Gardens is our Carnivorous Plant Display Bog. We need plants to fill this display! Specifically, we need HUNDREDS of Sundews, preferably tropical or subtropical, to fill the landscape and to use as a backdrop for other plants. If you have any extra plants we can use them, and if you can and want to, please consider propagating MORE sundews and VFTs to help fill this bog. We need 300 plants in 3 months! Lets all chip-in in any way we can. Page 2 of 6

CP Tidbit for March There were no entries for this section for this month s newsletter. We encourage members to submit entries. May 12, 2007 Attendance: 21 Meeting Notes: John Phillip led the meeting. Secretary s Minutes A discussion on the June bogwalk was initiated by John. More information was to follow. Ken Sicard motioned that the bylaws be discussed at the May meeting as voted on at the April meeting. The Chair of the Bylaws Committee was not present and it was decided the bylaws be discussed at the June meeting. Shaun Montminy talked to the membership about creating pens or mugs with the NECPS logos on them. Members expressed interest in the idea but no vote was taken. A silent auction took place. Mike Stiffler gave his presentation. Meeting Conclusion: John Phillip concluded the meeting. Events of Note For the first time, the NECPS is offering members the opportunity to participate in a bogwalk scheduled one week after the June meeting. Please come to the meeting for more details an additional email will also likely be sent to you in the next week regarding this. Nursery / Mail Orders The Wistuba order arrived without any difficulties and all the plants have been distributed! I was very pleased by the condition of the plants on arrival and by the large size of some of them! Andreas and his distributor (Travis) worked diligently to ensure that the plants arrived to us quickly and I wish to thank them. I also wish to thank John for picking up the plants at the post office and Jeff Matteson for holding the plants and then distributing them to the membership! Thanks also to those who participated (in no particular order: Mike Stiffler, Dave Sackett, Jeff Matteson, Fran Ingersoll, Bill Matthews, Kirk Martin, John Phillip, Glen Lord, and Ken Sicard) if it weren t for you this order would not have been possible. Thanks also to everyone for paying on time, it made things much easier for me. If you haven t paid for your plants yet, please do so at the next meeting. Page 3 of 6
