SAN FRANCISCO and A Sampling of Installations in San Francisco, California

Buena Vista Park City and County of San Francisco It was known as Hill Park in 1867 when San Francisco s Committee on Outside Lands reserved the 36-acre, 589 ft. high slope as the first park in the city park system. They paid squatters $88,250 to relinquish their claims to the hilltop. After its dedication as Buena Vista Park in 1894, John McLaren supervised the forestation of its hills. During Mayor Adolph Sutro s reign from 1894-98, San Francisco school children planted seedlings each Arbor Day. The summit became a view point for visitors and residents and, during the 1906 earthquake, people gathered there for five days to watch the fires downtown. San Francisco, The Ultimate Guide by Randolph Delehanty, Chronicle Books. The City of San Francisco is in the midst of a major renovation of its extensive city park system and upgrading accessibility is a top priority. As demonstrated in the Southeast Slope Improvements project at Buena Vista Park, the coldmanufactured, non-toxic NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement products allow San Francisco to fulfill its commitment to the use of green building materials with a sustainable pavement material that is also state of the art in pavement performance and natural aesthetics.

Lands End Coastal Trail Golden Gate National Recreation Area Golden Gate National Parks Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy An estimated one million annual visitors use the Lands End Coastal Trail in northwestern San Francisco. The dramatic coastal scenery and wild nature make this a world-class destination. On clear days views include the Farallon Islands, Point Reyes, the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate entry to San Francisco Bay. Passing ships, fishing boats and sailboats add to the enjoyment. The long-term goal of the National Park Service to improve trailhead, trails and overlooks was realized with a private fund raising effort led by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement, the environmentally friendly pavement surfacing originally developed by SSPCo in response to a National Park Service request, achieves one of its highest value uses at this site. Visitors using this trail regularly comment that these accessible surfaces are so natural that they did not realize they were actually on a paved surface.

Lands End: Merrie Way Overlook Golden Gate National Recreation Area Golden Gate National Parks Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy The improvements at Lands End in San Francisco have included multiple construction phases. In the first phase, NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement was placed along the long abandoned railroad grade constructed by Adolph Sutro in the 1880 s to bring residents from downtown San Francisco out to his amusement park via steam trains and electric streetcars. This multi-purpose trail is known as the Lands End Coastal Trail, or the Lands End Promenade. The primary automobile parking lot and trail heads are located in an area known as Merrie Way, the former location of Sutro s historic amusement park. As part of the ongoing improvement program at Lands End, the Merrie Way area was upgraded with a new overlook and accessible trails and walkways paved with a NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mix matching the pavement surfacing for the Lands End Coastal Trail just uphill from Merrie Way. The final phase of construction at Lands End includes a Visitor Center that will be operated by the National Park Service, providing visitor education services and programs including the history of the Ohlone Indians that occupied this site prior to the arrival of the Spanish and establishment of the Presidio of San Francisco.

Rob Hill Campground Presidio of San Francisco The Presidio Trust The only overnight campsites within San Francisco are located at the Presidio of San Francisco. Rob Hill Campground is situated at the Presidio s highest point, an often fog-shrouded hill overlooking Baker Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Educational programs for camping groups are conducted by The Presidio Trust, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, National Park Service and Bay Area Wilderness Training. The Ohlone Indians inhabited this site before the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition arrived and established a Spanish Presidio nearby in 1776. U.S. Army occupation began in 1852 and the hill served as a lookout station. It was operated by the Army as a campground for Scouts after World War II until the Presidio became a national park site. Rob Hill Campground was expanded in 2010 with improvements that included accessible NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement installations surrounding building facilities and connecting campgrounds, picnic sites and the communal fire circle.

McCoppin Square City and County of San Francisco McCoppin Square is named after the first Irish-born Mayor of San Francisco, Frank McCoppin, who among his accomplishments approved the plan for Golden Gate Park in 1868. McCoppin Square is located just south of Golden Gate Park in the Parkside District and it is the location of the Parkside Library and a Montessori preschool as well as a sports complex including playgrounds, a basketball court, a tennis court, and a sports field used for soccer, softball and baseball activities. This city park has significant topography, with the sports field located on a terrace uphill from the playground and tennis courts. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement was selected during the recent improvements of park facilities to replace deteriorating asphalt pathways. The high strength NaturalPAVE pavement surfaces are well suited for the most steeply climbing pathways and provide the desired natural aesthetic for a park with many wooded natural areas and new floral landscape plantings.

Lincoln Park City of County of San Francisco San Francisco s Lincoln Park was dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln in 1909. The land had been used as a cemetery since the late 1860 s and a major cemetery relocation was required prior to construction of the park. Lincoln Park is the location of recreational facilities including an eighteen hole golf course and one of San Francisco s premier fine art museums, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, which was constructed in 1924 as a replica of its namesake building in Paris, France. Lincoln Park is also the Lincoln Highway Western Terminus, the westernmost point of the nation s first transcontinental highway, running all the way across country from the eastern terminus, which is located in New York City s Times Square. The walkways providing access to the newly renovated Playground facility in Lincoln Park are paved with a NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement product.

NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement is a sustainable alternative to asphalt and concrete pavement materials.
