THANK YOU to all Contributors DLA 2013: Connectivity and Collaboration in Planning and Design Bernburg, 13 June, 2013 From 6 8 June, 2013 the international community and digital experts in Landscape Architecture came together to exchange and discuss the latest developments in Computer Sciences regarding Landscape Architecture. For the fourteenth time, Anhalt University offered a platform for these scientific, international dialogues. The participation of more than 90 scientist and professional participants and 60 landscape architecture students from a total of 33 countries shows the emerging significance of the DLA Conference in Landscape Architecture and its neighboring disciplines. The largest German flood of the last 100 years hit the Saale River in Bernburg on the day of arrival. Members of the Green Faculty of Anhalt University managed to relocate the entire conference within 24 hours from the flooded Conference Center at the Kurhaus to Kurhaus Bernburg on June 9, 2013 after the peak of the 2013 Flood the Biotechnikum, on the Bernburg Strenzfeld campus. This location is north of the river valley on high land and served as an oasis in the midst of crisis. 2 / 12

The Program Committee of the DLA managed once more to target the trend in the fast growing field of digital communication and virtual working challenges. Thanks to more than 60 presentations and workshop contributions, the conference participants were inspired by a wide range of intriguing topics and fruitful dialogs. Please enjoy the following photos. The international conference DLA 2013 was funded by the German Research Foundation DFG: BU 2105/6 1, and the Ministry for Science and Economy (Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft) of the State of Saxony Anhalt in 2013. Additionally, we are very thankful for the financial support, in 2013, by the sponsors Esri and ComputerWorks, which allows us to tender interesting financial awards for the student poster competition. Opening ceremony with Music by Antje Karls (Violin) and Thorsten Fabrizi (Piano) We would like to thank the staff of Anhalt University, the members of the DLA Committees and this year s speakers, moderators, vendors and sponsors for their contributions and support. This documentation does not, of course, replace the remarkable opportunities for exchange among guests of the conference. We are very happy that graduate students from around the world use our conference in order to build up their professional network. The tremendous academic input of many colleagues makes it more than worthwhile to regularly attend the DLA. 3 / 12

Opening keynote by Prof. Dr. Carl Steinitz, Harvard University and Honorary Senator of Anhalt University In 2013, the special circumstance of being in an official Catastrophe Zone required even more resources from the host university than usual. Here, I would like to mention at least some of the outstanding members of our team. First of all, we need to name another university, Rhein Main University in Wiesbaden, where Prof. Joachim Kieferle teaches. Prof. Kieferle has been setting up and hosting the conference review system for all of us for more than ten years. Inside Anhalt University we have the support of Matthias Pietsch our Senior GIS Researcher as well as Sabine Thalmann, Bettina Kranhold, Katrin Grey and Olaf Loos, all from the Office of the Dean. Ivonne Tausche Soika from the Office of the President and Kathrin Behrend from the Central Logistics Office were both of invaluable help. Berit Nelder arranged the new room reservations and Udo Schneider s team managed to transport the conference equipment on time to the new location. The huge amount of in house copying was done by Renate Geue who also serves as the faculty s photographer. The technical set up was carried out by Ralph Barnebeck, Malte Klein and Ralf Salm. Matthias Pietsch coordinated this technical network and helped with the orchestration of 20 undergraduates who were also guided by senior students Christoph Döbler and Sylvia Gerloff. The four member MLA student team which helped over many weeks with the lay out of the posters and proceedings was coordinated by Toomaj Goudarznia. 5 / 12

Furthermore, the DLA conference relies heavily on our English language consultant Jeanne Colgan. We are also very thankful to Noah Buhmann for technical assistance during the presentations and to Virginia Buhmann who helped the German students with English language communication. On Sunday we could appreciate two excursions. Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kircher introduced the DLA participants to his outstanding horticultural research in generating low maintenance plantings, and swimming ponds. The Dessau Landscape Architect Uwe Merz generously shared his detailed work in reconstructing parts of the Wörlitz Garden Realm. During the final phase we rely on the work of Birgit Klaus and Claudia Kiel of the financial department to process the invoices. The 400 pages peer reviewed proceedings Digital Landscape Architecture 2013 with contributions to this fourteenth DLA are published by Wichmann Verlag as Buhmann/Ervin/Pietsch (Eds.): Peer Reviewed Proceedings. Digital Landscape Architecture 2013 at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. We are currently working on completing the documentation of the conference on our platform www.digital la.de with a link to the pdf version of the proceedings, images, video clips, and presentations by the speakers. Thanks go to Sebastian Kluth who is responsible for the final documentation on the web. The DLA conference series is chaired by Professor Erich Buhmann of Anhalt University, whereas an international and interdisciplinary scientific conference program committee is responsible for the profile and concept of the DLA series. It is intended that the conference is held every second year at locations of university partners outside the Anhalt region. The DLA 2013 was held in Bernburg. The DLA 2014 is scheduled to be held at the Science City Campus, Zurich Hoenggerberg in Switzerland, from 21 23 May, 2014 and the DLA 2015 is scheduled for the Dessau and Bernburg campuses of Anhalt University in Germany from 28 30 May, 2015. Universities with a Landscape Architecture program wishing to host the DLA 2016 are being sought and should get in touch with us. By the end of July 2013 we will start to announce the call for papers for the DLA 2014 which is hosted by ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. 11 / 12

You will find the complete documentation of DLA 2013 at www.digital la.de Please send us your recommendations for the further DLA conferences. See you at DLA 2014: 21 23 May, 2014 in Zurich and at DLA 2015: 28 30 May, 2015 in Dessau and Bernburg Prof. Erich Buhmann, DLA Scientific Chair, la@loel.hs anhalt.de Anhalt University, Strenzfelder Allee 28, D 06406 Bernburg, Germany 12 / 12
