WHAT IS ErP? WHAT IS ErP? 04 05 IDEAL COMMERCIAL BOILERS HAS BEEN PREPARING FOR THE ENERGY RELATED PRODUCTS (ErP) DIRECTIVE SINCE ITS ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE 21ST OCTOBER 2009 WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF OUR MARKET LEADING CONDENSING RANGE. EACH BOILER OUTPERFORMS THE 2015 ErP REQUIREMENTS. WHAT IS ErP? ECODESIGN DIRECTIVE. ECODESIGN ESTABLISHES THE PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR A BOILER FROM THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS THROUGHOUT THE PRODUCT S LIFE CYCLE. THIS ENSURES EFFICIENCIES ARE BUILT INTO THE PRODUCT AT THE DESIGN STAGE FOR ALL FOSSIL FUEL BOILERS WITH AN INPUT BETWEEN 70kW AND 400kW. MINIMUM ErP EFFICIENCIES Up to 70kW boilers must achieve a min of 86% seasonal energy efficiency. 70-400kW boilers at 30% output must achieve a min of 94% efficiency. 70-400kW boilers at 100% output must achieve a min of 86% efficiency.* ErP is the framework directive that has been designed by the EU to improve the product efficiency of all Energy-related Products. FOR BOILERS GREATER THAN 400kW PART L BUILDING REGULATIONS APPLY. *This is higher than efficiency specified in Part L. The higher spec is adhered to. This includes all heating and hot water products up to 400kW. ErP is designed to help the EU achieve its target to reduce energy use by 20% and increase the share of renewable energies by 20% by 2020. Ecodesign and Labelling Directives make up the ErP legislation, which applies throughout the EU. ErP DIRECTIVE EFFECTIVE FROM ECODESIGN COMPLIANCE IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO CARRY THE CE MARK. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR MANUFACTURERS. High efficiency and atmospheric boilers up to 400kW do not meet the useful efficiency requirements and will no longer be manufactured. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR SPECIFIERS AND INSTALLERS WHAT IS ErP? ENERGY LABELLING DIRECTIVE. THE ENERGY LABELLING DIRECTIVE WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH ECODESIGN BY CLEARLY DISPLAYING THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF ANY BOILER WITH AN OUTPUT UP TO 70kW. All boilers up to 70kW will be required to have an energy label (product fiche). This will be included in the product brochure and other literature supplied with the boiler. These are already a familiar sight on white goods. Low rated products in bands F and G will not be permitted under the new directive. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR MANUFACTURERS Boiler manufacturers such as Ideal Commercial Boilers will be responsible for ensuring their products have compliant energy labelling. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR SPECIFIERS AND INSTALLERS Easy to specify the most efficient boiler Clear running cost savings You will need to calculate a system efficiency figure based on the different components of the system, e.g. boiler, control, renewable product used. Boilers include a blank label for system efficiency Manufacturers can no longer produce boilers which do not meet ErP requirements. As a result most high efficiency and atmospheric boilers under 400kW will become obsolete. Responsible manufacturers such as Ideal Commercial Boilers already have a range in place to support you post ErP. Boilers affected by ErP will of course be supported through the spares programme. You can continue to fit non ErP compliant boilers whilst stocks last at merchants post September 2015. Promote the benefits of condensing boilers in new projects. SYSTEM APPLICATION 14 15 SYSTEM APPLICATION. Ideal Imax Xtra EL boilers are designed for central heating of commercial premises and also for supplying hot water via a calorifier or plate heat exchanger. They are suitable for fully pumped, open vented or pressurised systems and can be connected to heating and/or hot water systems. They are not suitable for direct hot water supply or gravity heating/hot water systems. BRICKNELL PRIMARY SCHOOL CASE STUDY WE ARE DELIGHTED WITH THE NEW BOILERS. AS WELL AS BEING VERY RELIABLE THEY ARE ALSO EASY TO PROGRAMME, FEATURING A HOLIDAY MODE ON THE PANEL THAT WE CAN USE OUTSIDE OF TERM TIME WHICH CAN BE OVERRIDDEN SIMPLY BY PUSHING A BUTTON BARRY DRAY - BRICKNELL PRIMARY SCHOOL Bricknell Primary School is the largest primary school in Hull with around 630 pupils on roll. Prior to the installation of the new Imax Xtra EL boilers, heating for the school was generated by five standard efficiency boilers that were over 13 years old. Not only were the old boilers having to be run at full capacity throughout term time to meet the school s heat demand, leading to high energy use and running costs, they had also begun to fail and required continual maintenance. The decision was made to upgrade the appliances with a far more reliable, low cost solution. Barry Dray, Contracts Manager/Estimator at M Bielby Ltd, oversaw the project and worked closely with Steve Hass, Facilities Manager at Bricknell Primary School, to schedule the refurbishment work during the summer holidays to simplify installation and avoid disruption to pupils and staff. The Imax Xtra EL boilers were delivered directly from the Ideal Commercial Boilers manufacturing facility, located under a mile from the school. Barry commented, The Imax Xtra EL boilers were delivered on a pallet and, due to their compact size and shape, were easy to manoeuvre up the ramp in the boiler house and onto the existing base. As they take up significantly less room than the old boilers, there is now plenty of space around each unit, making boiler access and maintenance much easier. The most challenging installation aspect faced by Barry and the team was the replacement of the old flue, as the flue exit point for the school s plant room is via an existing chimney stack. To overcome this issue, a scaffolding rig was erected which enabled engineers to remove the old flue and replace it with a condensing boiler flue. Barry added, Whenever we wanted to check a technical aspect relating to the boilers or the flue, Ideal Commercial Boilers were on site straight away. I couldn t fault the technical back-up or service they provided. Steve Hass affirmed, We are delighted with the new boilers. As well as being very reliable they are also easy to programme, featuring a holiday mode on the panel that we can use outside of term time which can be overridden simply by pushing a button if the school is occupied at any point during the holidays. Running costs have also been greatly reduced and by the end of the year we hope to have saved 1/3 on our heating bill compared to the previous boilers. This is a fantastic result. The Imax Xtra EL floor standing condensing boiler range features a single heat exchanger and has been specially designed for commercial applications that require larger outputs in a compact package. Available in 320, 395, 470, 545 and 620kW outputs, all Imax Xtra models offer very low NOx Class 6 performance for maximum points on the BREEAM scale and extremely high efficiencies up to 109.8% part load at 30% output. This means that the 320kW and 396kW models are fully compliant with the Energy-related Product (ErP) Directive s high efficiency requirements, which is applicable to boilers up to 400kW, whilst the models above are compliant with Building Regulations Part L2. Straightforward integration with 0-10v BMS systems is easy; together with volt-free contacts and alarm signals, there is a range of additional kits available for added control, including a modulating sequencer, plant room sensor, outside sensor and optional gateway adaptors to MODBUS, LONWORKS or BACNET. Bricknell Primary School first opened its doors in 1933 and converted to academy status in October 2013 as part of an umbrella trust. BIM 18 BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM) 19 The UK's BIM mandate deadline is April 2016 when a fully collaborative 3D BIM will be required for Government funded construction projects. From this point all projects will included asset information, documentation and data as part of a manufacturer's BIM objects, saving time, money and resources that are currently being lost through outdated, inefficient processes. BOILER BIM COMPONENTS There is now a comprehensive selection of three-dimensional BIM components available online at www.idealcommercialboilers.com/bim, representing individual wall hung and floor standing models as well as many multiboiler configurations. These can be easily downloaded free of charge and subsequently utilised within compatible building design software. Each of these components is embedded with a wealth of essential technical information, such as outputs, efficiencies, clearance zones, pipe kit options, flueing options, NOx emissions, and flow and return requirements. This data becomes readily available when the component is imported into the building plan, enabling the system designer to try out different boiler models and outputs and test different configurations sometimes before the building even exists. The standard electronic format used by manufacturers of boilers and other building products is called COBie, which stands for Construction Operations Buildings information exchange. BIM is designed to be operational beyond a project and indeed for the entire lifecycle of each product or system. Therefore, manufacturers are required to provide information that will be needed long after the boiler has been commissioned, when the facilities manager is the only member of the supply chain left on site. This includes information such as the boiler s maintenance requirements and operating instructions that will be vital to ensure the boiler remains at peak efficiency in the years to come. OPEN SYSTEMS SEALED SYSTEMS 20 UNIVERSAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS OF COMMERCIAL CONDENSING BOILER RANGE. SEALED SYSTEMS. Note. The method of filling, refilling, topping up or flushing sealed primary hot water circuit from the mains for a non-domestic property is shown below. 21 OPEN SYSTEMS. The system should be vented directly off the boiler flow pipe, as close to the boiler as possible. The cold feed entry should be inverted and MUST be positioned between the pump and the vent, and not more than 150mm (6 ) away from the vent connection. There should be a minimum height, 500mm (20 ) of open vent above the cistern water level. The vertical distance between the highest point of the system and the feed/expansion cistern water level MUST not be less than DIM A. The information provided is based on the following assumptions: The boiler is at the highest point of the circulation system. Systems designed to raise above the flow tappings will, of course, automatically require a minimum static head higher than shown. The position of the open vent/safety pipe above the expansion cistern water level is given as a guide only. The final position will depend upon particular characteristics of the system. Pumping over of water into the expansion cistern should be avoided. In general commercial closed pressurised systems are provided with either manual or automatic water make up. In both instances it will be necessary to fit automatic controls intended to protect the boiler, circulating system and ancillary equipment by shutting down the boiler plant if a potentially hazardous situation should arise. Examples of such situations are low water level and operating pressure or excessive pressure within the system. Depending on circumstances, controls will need to be either manual or automatic reset. In the event of a shutdown both visual and audible alarms may be necessary. Expansion vessels used must comply with BS. 4814 and must be sized on the basis of the total system volume and initial charge pressure. Initial minimum charge pressure should not be less than 1.2 bar (15psi) and must take account of the static head and specification of the pressurising equipment. The maximum water temperatures permissible at the point of minimum pressure in the system are specified in Guidance Note PM5. When make up water is not provided automatically it will be necessary to fit controls which shut down the plant in the event of the maximum system pressure approaching to within 0.35bar (5psi) of the safety valve setting. VENTILATION WATER TREATMENT 22 23 VENTILATION. OPEN FLUED APPLICATION Safe, efficient, and trouble-free operation of conventionally flued gas boilers is vitally dependent on the provision of an adequate supply of fresh air to the room in which the appliance is installed. Ventilation by grilles communicating directly with the outside air is required at both high and low levels. The minimum free areas of these grilles must be in accordance with BS6644 or IGE UP10. The use of an extractor fan in the same room as the boiler (or in an adjacent room in communication) can, in certain conditions, adversely affect the safe operation of the boiler. Where such a fan is already fitted, or if an extractor fan is likely to be installed at a later date, then the advice of the gas supplier should be obtained. BALANCED FLUE APPLICATIONS Room sealed installations require no air from the boiler house for combustion as this is drawn direct from the outside atmosphere. However, air may be required to ventilate the boiler house and remove any excess heat generated by the boiler (2cm² free area per kw net heat input at both high and low level BS 6644). Imax Xtra boilers have an air inlet connection which may be used with proprietary ducting if required. A separate flue connection is still required. WATER TREATMENT. CENTRAL HEATING The condensing range of boilers have a stainless steel heat exchangers. IMPORTANT The application of any other treatment to this product may render the guarantee of Ideal Boilers Invalid. Ideal Boilers recommend Water Treatment in accordance with the Benchmark Guidance Notes on Water Treatment in Central Heating Systems.
