Passive Fire Protection DuraSystems Barriers Inc. Rated Systems for fire, blast and impact resistance. Coking.com Presentation March 2008. 1
DuraSystems Barriers Inc. DuraSystems has been a pioneer in the passive fire and blast protection field for over 20 years with installations worldwide. DuraSystems is a North American based company with manufacturing facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico Passive Fire Protection Passive fire protection is playing an increasingly vital role in modern construction. Built into the fabric of a building or structure, it provides inherent fire safety and protection by preventing the spread of flame, heat and smoke. Passive fire protection will maintain the fundamental requirements of structural stability, fire separations and offers a safe means of evacuation of a distressed building or structure. It gives occupants, time to escape and firefighters more time to save the buildings or structures. 2
Passive Blast Protection Passive blast protection is also playing an increasingly vital role in modern construction. Simultaneously built into the fabric of a building or structure with fire protection, it provides inherent blast safety and protection by preventing the spread of overpressure. Passive blast protection will maintain the fundamental requirements of structural stability, blast separations and offers a protected means of evacuation of a distressed building or structure. It saves occupants from the exposure to blast, reduces the destructive forces of overpressure and can save or reduce the damage to buildings or structures. Measurable Fire Safety Rigorous testing has been done on DuraSteel sheets proving resistance to fire penetration for up to 6 hrs at temperatures of 1000 Celsius / 1832 Fahrenheit. 3
Measurable Blast Safety Rigorous testing has been done with our DuraSteel sheets proving Blast resistance up to 2 atmospheres = 2 bar = 202 kpa = 29 psi = 4232 psf. Video Clip 4
Why are we used? On July 6, 1988 Piper Alpha offshore gas platform was lost along with 168 lives. The root cause was determined to be an explosion followed by a post blast fire. At the time Piper Alpha was providing 10% of the North Sea oil and gas production. Insured losses at the time amounted to 3.4 Billion dollars (US). Incidents create actions As a direct result of the horrific Piper Alpha disaster, DuraSystems worked to create our Predictive Engineering Software. This computer modeling software allows for the design of walls incorporating DuraSteel. Lloyds of London recognizes and certifies our modeling to be accurate and does not require destructive testing to prove effectiveness. 5
How are we used? DuraSteel can be manufactured into assemblies to provide Blast/Fire resistant: Walls, floors & ceilings Barriers Equipment enclosures Ductwork Where are we used? 6

Why Cokers need us! The coking process has inherent risks that can be greatly reduced utilizing Passive Fire and Blast protections. Personnel and equipment can be separated from risks. Significant reduction in damage can be achieved. Reduction of lost time and productivity. 8
The cost of loss Beer @ $4 a pint = $32 a gallon. This works out to $1440 a barrel!! Auto gasoline @ $1 a liter or $4 a gallon. This works out to $180 a barrel. Proven effective - Before 9
Bass Brewery - UK The building in the preceding page is approx. 8 city blocks square. DuraSteel wall assemblies were installed throughout the facility separating the manufacturing floor from the packaging area. The subsequent fire that started in the packaging area was too large to fight and therefore was left to burn itself out. The brewery was producing 2 days after the fire, due directly to the installation of DuraSteel walls. Proven effective - After 10
Passive Prevention Savings Assuming a 2 day loss of beer production of only 1000 barrels/day = $2,440,000. If the production facility required any repair the losses would be measured in months. 1 month loss = 30 days x 1000 barrels. $43,200,000 (11 million bottles of beer!). Coker losses Coking facilities are measuring production in turn-overs.. Any measurable lost time will result the loss of drum turnover. Due to the sheer size of your facilities, lost time is equally huge regardless of how short the time loss is! 11
Safety with Savings Working with you and your facility staff, we would customize walls, barriers and assemblies to maximize safety while reducing losses and lost time in the event of an incident. The Coking Industry and its operators function in an EXTREME ENVIRONMENT and our product is designed for these very Extreme Conditions. Thank you for your time. Questions? 12
